2 Derbyshire Urban Studies Centre Engaging, inspiring and interactive fieldwork day visits in an urban environment. Choose from these hands-on, curriculum linked programmes which are offered from our urban studies classroom in Chesterfield or contact us to design something special for your group. Key Stage 1 programmes Art and Design Urban Art and Design: Architecture is the art that we live in Using colour, pattern, texture, line, form and space to investigate some of Chesterfield's key buildings. Sculpture Vultures: Hunting out, recording and understanding Chesterfield's amazing three dimensional artwork! Geography Get to know Chesterfield: Explore the town, its features and functions using a wide range of geography skills - maps, sketching and observation. History George Stephenson - A significant individual: Why did this famous man come to Chesterfield, what did he do when he was here and how have the people of Chesterfield remembered him? Music Musical Market Place: Spend the day discovering sounds in Chesterfield's bustling market place, experiment with percussion instruments and interpret these sounds to compose a piece of music to tell the story of the market place. RE Chesterfield at Christmas: Explore how Chesterfield as a town and the church get ready for Christmas. Mathematics Infant Architects: Practical applications of maths in the urban environment involving shape, space and measurement techniques. Sessions fully led by experienced, qualified teachers. 3 Key Stage 2 programmes Art and Design Urban Designers: Re-design an urban public space using art, design technology, maths and geography skills. Art about town: Create your own urban inspired artworks in a variety of artist's styles. Geography Understanding Chesterfield: Investigating the human geography of Chesterfield. Town Settlements: How settlers, invaders, traders and industrialisation have shaped Chesterfield. Investigating Rivers*: (summer term only) Practical, hands-on and study of river features. Geography skills*: Develop practical geography skills including map and compass work, interpreting aerial and landscape photos, field sketches and more. History Victorian Chesterfield - a local history study: Rags and riches lives and buildings of Victorian Chesterfield. Roman times in Chesterfield: Investigate the life and legacy of Romans in Chesterfield. Tudor times in Chesterfield: Including a study of a surviving Tudor building, its construction techniques, old maps and how the Tudor period still influences the town today. Design Technology Towers - pulleys and construction (January to March): Study and climb the tower at the Crooked Spire church and complete practical design and build team challenges. Science Habitats*: (summer term only) Hands-on fieldwork investigating wet and dry habitats and their species. English Inspired by Chesterfield: Develop a range of literacy skills and genres using Chesterfield as inspiration. * These days run from Holmebrook Valley Park in Chesterfield and have an additional charge for room hire. Key Stage 3 programmes Geography and History: Most suitable for Year 7 this day develops and practices a range of key skills around Chesterfield.

4 Outreach visits across Derbyshire Tailor made fieldwork: Let us come to you! We'll tailor make fieldwork and lead your group in your local urban area, on your school site or on a nearby countryside site. Any theme of your choice including: Art and architecture. Building detectives. River studies on a stream or brook. Investigate your local history, geography and landscape. Introduce map and compass work. Habitat and wildlife work. Practical fieldwork skills measuring, questionnaires, data collection, recording, interpretation. Supported visit to a local museum, art gallery or church. Specific year events such as memorials around Remembrance Day or environmental theme days. Charges: 300: design and delivery of a fieldwork day at a location of your choosing for a class group. 5.50: per pupil repeat delivery by our Education Visit Leaders of a specifically designed day for additional groups and classes. Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site: Use the world s first factories and mill villages around Matlock Bath, Cromford, Belper and Darley Abbey and the engineers, inventors and entrepreneurs of the past to inspire your pupils today. This fantastic world heritage site provides opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, maths, history, music, drama and literacy! 5 Derbyshire Record Office: Use original source material and a professional archivist at Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock and combine it with practical outdoor fieldwork activities. 6 Derbyshire Forest School Derbyshire Forest Schools service aims to support settings, schools and groups in Derbyshire in developing Forest Schools Programmes in a sustainable way. The Forest Schools philosophy is to engage and inspire individuals of any age through an ongoing programme of positive experience and participation in achievable tasks and activities in a woodland environment. Forest Schools is growing locally and nationally and benefits to learning are wide ranging and include: Increased self esteem and self confidence. Improved co-operation, communication skills and awareness of others. Increased motivation, self discovery and positive attitude towards learning. A feeling of ownership and pride in the local environment. A better understanding of, and a connection to the outdoors. Strong practical skills. Increased knowledge and understanding. 7 Projects and Teacher Workshops Learning Outside the Classroom Courses and Workshops: We run a wide range of courses and workshops throughout the year. These include how to run activities in your school grounds linked to the English, Maths, Science, Geography, Music, History and Geography curriculum at Key Stage 1 and 2. We also offer introductions to outdoor learning for Early Years staff and Forest School related workshops. Tailor made workshops and training days: We will happily tailor make a teacher training workshop for you, your staff and your needs. This could be: How to use and develop your school's grounds for different curriculum areas. Forest School taster sessions for adult staff. How to plan fieldwork programmes effectively and look at risk-benefit analysis. How to use your built heritage and architecture. How to teach about climate change and energy use or make your school more sustainable. Charges: 35: Teacher workshops: Price per adult for workshops offered as part forming part of our annual programme of courses. 600: Adult teacher workshop: Full day: Tailor made teacher training day or workshop. Includes planning, preparation, resources and delivery. Maximum group size depends on activities and location. 20 booking fee applies. 280: Adult / Teacher workshop: Half or part day: (As above) 20 booking fee applies. Partnership projects: We get involved in a wide range of projects with many organsiations and settings including developing learning resources and delivering funded projects. Free to loan resource boxes: Contact us to find out more Biodiversity Action in Schools: We have a free to loan resource box and downloadable resources to measure, monitor and improve biodiversity in your school grounds or local area. People and Peregrines: In partnership with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust we have a loan box with a wide range of learning resources linked to the live webcams and the lives of the Derby Cathedral Peregrine Falcons. Technology Then, Technology Now: Working in partnership with the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund we have worked with young people aged 16 to 23. We used state of the art modern technology to create virtual tours and 3D printed artefacts interpreting technology of the past in the world's first factory sites.
