1 Media Rich Lesson Plan Teacher Training Institute Prairie Public TITLE: Butterfly Life Cycle WRITTEN BY: Terri Velure GRADE LEVEL(S); Second Grade TIME ALLOTMENT: Six 30 minute periods for a little over a week OVERVIEW: Activate students knowledge on butterflies by observing caterpillars, butterflies, and butterfly life cycle pictures and videos. In this process, terms metamorphosis, larva, pupa, chrysalis, etc. are introduced. Before reading, I will show students the cover page and the first page of the book. Ask them if they can guess what is the round white ball on the leaf? Read A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle from teachertube.com. As story is read, ask students if they have noticed caterpillars during the summer in their backyard? Caterpillars eat leaves. Ask students if they have ever noticed what leaves look like once caterpillars are done eating them? What happened on Saturday after the very hungry caterpillar ate all kinds of food? Ask students if they ever had a stomach ache after eating too much food? Ask students to guess what will the caterpillar turn into after he comes out of his cocoon? Hand out Butterfly Life Cycle worksheets after each lesson and students connect, label, and color butterfly life stages. SUBJECT MATTER: Science Language Arts Math Art LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Students will be able to identify the four stages of a butterfly s life cycle. 2. Students will be able to define the word metamorphosis. 3. Students will be able to draw and label the stages of a butterfly s life cycle. 4. Students will understand the concept of symmetry. STANDARDS: Science Life Science: Plants and animals undergo a series of orderly changes during their life cycles

MATERIALS: Computers and internet Smart board Paper Pencils Color pencils or crayons

3 Scissors For art project: beans for eggs, different shaped pasta for caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly Tempera paint Construction paper Colorful Anchor Charts on Butterfly Life Cycle Butterfly Observation Mini- book journal template Butterfly Life Cycle cut and paste booklet Butterfly Life Cycle fill in the blank sheet and word find Butterfly Cycle song Butterfly Life Cycle booklet to color, label and draw stages Butterfly Life Cycle Assessment cut, glue and label the life cycle stages The Butterfly Alphabet Book PREP FOR TEACHERS: Collect and prepare materials for art project and activities. Make copies of booklets, sheets, etc. for each student. Load and bookmark links for Butterfly Unit. Pictures of the four stages of the butterfly life cycle. Put poster with vocabulary and pictures up. INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY - SETTING THE STAGE : 1. Look at colorful pictures and discuss what the students already know and want to know about butterflies. 2. Record information on a KWL chart. 3. Watch The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle on the teachertube.com website. 4. When the story is finished, students will be asked to work in their Butterfly Observation Mini- book journals. LEARNING ACTIVITIES: 1. Second day, students will watch Voyage of the Butterflier XT from prairiepublic.org. 2. The teacher would then display a poster showing the life cycle broken down into the four stages. 3. She would then give each child a Butterfly Life Cycle cut and paste Booklet. Then students would work on journals. 4. Third day, teacher would review with the students what they learned from the video from yesterday. 5. Write the word metamorphosis on the board. 6. Ask students if they know what it means.

4 7. Have them explore this big word by brainstorming and talking about what process the butterfly goes through. 8. Have students write about metamorphosis of a butterfly in their journal. 9. End third day with Butterfly Cycle chant and hand movements. 10. Fourth day, watch video World of Nature: Monarch Butterfly: Milkweed to Mexico from discoveryeducation.com. 11. Discuss video. 12. Make a Butterfly Life Cycle Wheel with card stock wheel, beans, pasta, glue, and tempera paint. Fun art project! 13. Fifth day, the teacher will show students pictures of butterfly wings in a booklet called The Butterfly Alphabet Book. 14. She will ask the students to brainstorm what they notice. Are they alike, different, etc.? 15. She will write the word symmetry on the board and explain the meaning. 16. Students will cut out construction paper butterflies and use paint on one side, then fold to make the paint spread to the other side and see that it will make a symmetrical pattern. 17. Watch Video: Discovery Education: World of Nature: Monarch Butterfly: Milkweed to Mexico 18. As a wrap up activity students will create their own versions of The Very Hungry Caterpillar using all of their new knowledge on the life cycle of the butterfly. They will publish their book and share it with the class. Assessment will be that their story includes the four stages. CULMINATING ACTIVITY: 1. Assessment: Students will create their own version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They will publish their book and share it with the class. Assessment will be that their story includes the four stages. 2. Assessment: Students will complete their journals and cut, glue and label an assessment sheet with parts for the life cycle of a butterfly. CROSS- CURRICULAR ACTIVITY: Science: 1. Watch Discovery Education: World of Nature: Monarch Butterfly: Milkweed to Mexico 2. Watch The Magic School Bus Butterflies (Video) 3. Butterfly Life Cycle Poster Learn vocabulary for the life cycle 4. Observe many pictures of butterflies and their life cycle 5. Observe many good photographs of butterflies and moths from around the world from Children s Butterfly Site

5 Math: 1. Learn symmetry and understand it by doing an art project. 2. Students fold construction paper in half. Place drops of tempera paint on middle of fold. Fold paper again, smoothing the paper together. Open paper gain and let paint dry. Students should see that there is a symmetrical pattern. Students will trace a half of a butterfly on the fold. Then trace and cut out beautiful butterflies. Butterflies will be displayed in the hallway. Language Arts: 1. Reading together The Very Hungry Caterpillar 2. Vocabulary words 3. Students write their own version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar 4. Butterfly Observation journals 5. Butterfly Life Cycle fill in the blank sheet and word find 6. Butterfly Life Cycle song 7. Butterfly Life Cycle booklet to color, label, and draw stages 8. Butterfly Life Cycle Assessment cut, glue and label the life cycle stages 9. Look through and read The Butterfly Alphabet Book COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: 1. Take students for a nature walk around town and see how many butterflies are found. We can come back and paint some butterfly pictures for the community to enjoy at our Community Center. 2. As part of our plant unit we can plant flowers at the front of the school and plant some plants that attract butterflies. And observe our flower garden daily. And hopefully see some butterflies enjoying it also. STUDENT MATERIALS: Pencils Colored pencils or crayons Glue Scissors Copies of booklets, activities, etc.
