ABSTRACT Students participating in this unit on maps and globes will gain basic geographical knowledge of their world. They will be introduced to the four cardinal directions and will be expected to identify the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Assessment will include teacher observation as students work through the various activities. II. III. IV. OVERVIEW A. Concept Objectives 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical themes of geography including location and regions. (Arkansas Frameworks PPE.2.2) 2. Students will understand the representation of land and water on a map and globe in relation to their lives. 3. Students will gain an understanding of cardinal directions and of their importance to location. B. Content from the Core Knowledge Sequence 1. Geography- Spatial Sense (working with maps, globes, and other geographic tools, page 11) C. Skill Objectives 1. Students will interpret information from maps and globes (Arkansas Frameworks SSPS.1.3, DSP.1.1.D) 2. Students will compare and contrast maps and globes (Arkansas Frameworks PPE.2.4, SSPS.1.6) 3. Various maps and globes 2. Me On the Map by Joan Sweeney 3. Two Views from Geography Rhymes and Chants pg Venn diagram (copy to transparency) Appendix A. 5. Overhead projector 6. Transparency markers 7. Teacher made KWL chart using chart tablet or bulletin board paper C. Key Vocabulary 1. globe - a three-dimensional model of the earth 2. map- a flat drawing of the earth 3. Earth- the planet where we live D. Procedures/Activities 1. Preparing the unit-- KWL. Ask the students what they know about maps and globes. List responses on KWL chart. 2. Read Me On the Map. Explain that the Earth is the planet we live on. There are maps and globes to help us see the Earth as a whole. Show the students the difference between a map and a globe. 3. Ask the students what they want to know about maps and globes. List responses on KWL chart. 4. Break students up into two groups. Give one group a globe, and one group a map. After students have explored and brainstormed for two minutes, display Venn diagram on overhead projector. 5. Have groups compare and contrast the map and globe. Write responses on Venn. 6. Introduce Two Views poem. Have students recite poem as a group. E. Assessment/Evaluation 1. Teacher observation while doing Venn diagram. 2. 3 Lesson Two: Land and Water A. Daily Objectives 1. Concept Objectives a. Students will understand the representation of land and water on a map and globe in relation to their lives. b. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical themes of geography including location and regions. (Arkansas Frameworks PPE.2.2) 2. Lesson Content a. Locate land and water on a map and globe. 3. Skill Objective(s) a. The students will be able to identify land and water on a map and globe. B. Materials 1. Various world maps and globes 2. Beach ball globe 3. Green and blue unifix cubes 4. Appendix C map of land and water 5. Crayons (blue and green) C. Key Vocabulary 1. Land- the part of the world people live on 2. Water- liquid that has no taste and living things need it to stay alive D. Procedures/Activities 1. Review previous lesson using KWL chart. 2. Teacher will explain the representation and use of land and water on a map and globe. 3. Pass out various world maps and globes to students and let them explore land and water. 4. Teacher will show globe beach ball. Explain to students that the ball will be tossed to them. When caught, look to see where their thumbs are. Ask them if they touch water, land, or both. Let them pick a green unifix cube for land and a blue unifix cube for water. After each child has performed the activity, collect cubes and put them together to compare the number of times land and water were touched. 5. Pass out Appendix B. Have children color landmasses green and water blue. E. Assessment/Evaluation 1. Children will color Appendix B as the teacher has directed. Lesson Three: Atlantic and Pacific Oceans A. Daily Objectives 1. Concept Objective(s) a. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical themes of geography including location and region. (Arkansas Frameworks PPE.2.2) 2. Lesson Content a. Identify Atlantic and Pacific Oceans 3. Skill Objective(s) a. Students will locate the Atlantic Ocean on a map and globe. b. Students will locate the Pacific Ocean on a map and globe. B. Materials 1. Map What on Earth is, Kindergarten 2002 Core Knowledge Conference 3

4 2. Globe 3. Poem Oceans from Geography Rhymes and Chants pg Appendix C of the United States and oceans C. Key Vocabulary 1. Ocean- large body of salt water surrounding the continents D. Procedures/Activities 1. Teacher will review with students previous lessons by having a small question and answer session over lessons one and two. 2. Teacher will define what an ocean is and that the Earth has four oceans. Point on a map and globe the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Tell the students that these are the oceans closest to where we live. 3. Introduce Oceans poem from Geography Rhymes and Chants pg Pass out Appendix C of the United States and oceans. Explain this is where we live and the oceans closest to us. Instruct students to color the Pacific Ocean purple and the Atlantic Ocean orange. E. Assessment/Evaluation 1. Children will color Appendix C as instructed by the teacher. (Note: Look only for correct colors on the east and west of the United States. Do not count off for north and south directions.) Lesson Four: North and South Poles A. Daily Objectives 1. Concept Objective(s) a. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical themes of geography including location and region. (Arkansas Frameworks PPE.2.2) b. Students will gain an understanding of cardinal directions and of their importance to location. 2. Lesson Content a. Locate the North and South Poles on a map and globe. 3. Skill Objective(s) a. Students will identify North Pole on a map and globe. b. Students will identify South Pole on a map and globe. c. Students will locate cardinal directions on a map and globe. B. Materials 1. Map 2. Globe 3. My Global Address by Tamara Nunn 4. North Pole - The very top of our world 2. South Pole - The very bottom of our world D. Procedures/Activities 1. Teacher will review lessons taught with the students before beginning lesson four. 2. Explain to students that in order for us to locate find places on a map or globe, we need to know the four main directions that tell you where you are. 5 main directions are North, South, East, and West. East is where the sun rises. West is where the sun sets. 3. Teacher will point to the directions in the room and label them on each wall. 4. Look at the directions on a map. Explain that on most maps, the top is north; bottom is south; right is east; and left is west. Teach the students the Direction Chant from School Days pg Pass out Appendix D. Instruct students to listen closely for verbal directions on where to glue the pictures. 6. Tell students that since they now understand directions we can find the North and South Poles. Ask students if they have heard of the North and South Pole. Explain these are special names for the very top and bottom of our world. See if they can find these on a globe or a map. E. Assessment/Evaluation 1. Children will glue pictures according to teacher s verbal directions on Appendix D. 2. Ask children where the North and South Poles are on a globe or map. Children will correctly locate the North and South Poles. VI. CULMINATING ACTIVITY (Lesson 5) A. The teacher and students will complete the K-W-L chart by the teacher listing what the students have learned under the L. After completing the K-W-L chart the students will make their own globe. Ask for parent volunteers to help with making the globes. Students will stuff small paper lunch bags with newspaper and then shape into a ball.
