The flange system consists of two flanges, a sealing ring and bolt fasteners to compress the seal between the two flanges. pair of S/NSI flanges must have one grooved flange to accept the sealing ring and one smooth face flange onto which the seal will be made. To ease system assembly rotatable flanges are available for bolt hole alignment. &N offers a complete line of flanges, fittings, valves, traps and accessories with S/NSI connections that can be used to create a complete vacuum system or pumping line. NSI/S standards &N s S/NSI flanges and fittings are manufactured for compatibility with 150lb. S flanges and 150 NSI flanges. The S/NSI flange specification was originally created for use with steam pipes. Now adapted for vacuum use the system utilizes a Viton elastomer seal and is capable of achieving high vacuum pressure levels. ll flanges offered by &N orporation are manufactured on state-of-the-art N (computer controlled) lathes to ensure consistency with dimensional tolerances, and extremely fine surface finishes. Water soluble, non-sulfur based coolants are used during the manufacturing process. 4 Section 7 S lange System &N orporation High Vacuum omponents Since 1965 Rotatable S lange ixed S lange with O-Ring Groove Insert O-ring S/NSI Standard Sealing ssemblies The S/NSI flange system provides a complete range of flanges to mount with tubing sized 1 up to 12 diameter. The S/NSI seal assembly consists of 3 types of sub-components, two flanges, a sealing o- ring and a bolt fastener kit to compress the seal between the two flanges. S/NSI langes are available two general styles; fixed and rotatable. ixed flanges have a set bolt hole orientation while rotatable flanges have a two piece design allowing for bolt hole rotation to ease bolt alignment when mating the two flanges. The two pieces of the rotatable S/NSI flange are called the insert and the housing (in which the bolt holes are machined). When installing these components the housing is placed behind the insert on the tubing prior to welding the insert to the tubing. oth fixed and rotatable flanges are available with an o-ring groove. ll S/NSI sealing assemblies must include 1 smooth face S/NSI flange and 1 grooved face flange. The sealing o-ring is placed into the groove prior to compressing the flanges together with a bolt kit. langes in this system are sized according to the nominal internal diameter for the tubing onto which they will be welded. When adding new flanges to an existing vacuum line, valve or chamber carefully compare all dimensions to be sure you are ordering a compatible flange. The most important dimensions to consider are the bolt circle diameter and the internal diameter of the flanges. &N orporation 707 Southwest 19th venue Williston, lorida (352) (800) LNG1 X (352) S/NSI o-ring seals are made of Viton elastomer. Viton seals are capable of high vacuum pressures and temperatures as high as 150 (200 intermittent use). The sealing ring is placed into the grooved flange and compressed against the smooth sealing face of the mating flange. Viton gaskets are re-usable and can be used many times to make new vacuum tight seals. 5 S lange System Section 7 High Vacuum omponents Since 1965 &N orporation S/NSI Standard Sealing ssemblies sealing pair of S/NSI flanges contains 1 flange with a smooth face and 1 flange with an o-ring groove machined into the surface. Viton sealing o-ring is placed into the groove of one of the two flanges. The flanges compress the o-ring as the fastening bolts are tightened. The o-ring cold flows under this pressure and fills microscopic surface imperfections on the sealing flange face creating a vacuum tight seal capable of withstanding temperature extremes from 20 up to 200 and pressures as low as 1X10-8 Torr. Viton O-ring daptive asteners The adaptive bolt hole bushing reduces a 3/4 bolt hole down to a 3/8 bolt hole. This is commonly used to connect an S/NSI flange (sizes 200, 300 or 400) to a gate valve with a matching flange. The S/NSI flange on the gate valve will have tapped bolt holes and require non-standard bolts available on request dia.406 I dia ushing daptive Sealing Gaskets In the event that two smooth faced or grooved flanges come together in your system an adaptive gasket can save the day. &N can provide either a thin smooth sealing face gasket or a thin gasket with O-Rings on both sides. oth gaskets are thin enough to allow the use of standard bolts to compress the assembly. These problems are not common and therefore &N does not stock these components. 6 Section 7 S Hardware &N orporation High Vacuum omponents Since 1965 S/NSI Hardware This elastomer sealed flange systems uses bolt kits to fasten together your flanges and Viton elastomer O-Rings to create a seal. In addition to the standard fasteners and seals, adaptive hardware is available to meet the needs of your specific application. S/NSI asteners These bolt kits fasten two flanges together that both have clearance bolt holes. The bolts slide easily through smooth bored bolt holes and are fastened with a nut and washer on the far side of the flange assembly. These bolt kits are offered in Hex-head bolt, nut and washer kits. *1 S/NSI Seals Viton seals are a vacuum grade fluorocarbon elastomer O-Rings that are compressed between the two S/NSI flanges to create a seal capable of achieving high vacuum pressure.
