1 Sheikh Zayed Private Academy for Boys THURSDAY NEWS Volume th December 2015 Each week in Thursday News we will update you with information from the school. This week s edition contains news of some great events that have happened over the last two weeks at SZPAB. Thank you!!! Thank you to all parents that have been so supportive of the school during this first term. It has been a pleasure to serve this wonderful community. I do hope you have a very enjoyable and refreshing Winter break with your families. Students will return to School on Sunday the 10 th January REMINDER: Change of School Day Times Dear Parents and Families of the Sheikh Zayed Private Academy for Boys I am writing to you to explain that we will be changing the time of the school day from the beginning of the Spring Term. This is the result of our survey conducted earlier this term, when a large number of parents expressed a desire for the school day times to be the same as those of the Sheikh Zayed Private Academy for Girls. Therefore, from Sunday the 10 th January, school will begin 15 minutes earlier at 7.45am and finish 15 minutes earlier at 3.00pm. On Thursday, school will end at 12.45pm for Grades 1 to 7. Please note that the school day will remain as it is now for KG1 and KG2.

2 National Day Celebrations Thank you to all those involved in helping towards what proved to be a spectacular first National Day for SZPAB. The highlight of the day was the visit of Sheikh Mohamed. The pictures below tell some of the story

3 Coffee and Conversation Ours second Coffee and Conversation Club took place on Thursday the 9 th December. Thank you to the many parents who joined us. Their views were most welcome and we will be working to keep improving the school, using the ideas of parents. Our next Coffee and Conversation Club will take place on Thursday the 28 th January at the later time of 10.45am 12.00pm International Computer Science Week All of our students from Grades 1 to 7 have been enjoying (or soon will be) International Computer Science Week by participating in the Hour of Code. If you would like to find out more or even have a go yourself (like I did), try this link General Knowledge Spelling Tests for Grades 4 to 7 General Knowledge and Spelling Tests will resume after the Winter break. We have fallen behind our schedule as a result of holidays, so we will open up with General Spellings on the 14 th January and All About the UAE on the 21 st Januar National Sports Day We launched our brand new House System on Wednesday the 25 th November, to mark National Sports Day. It was wonderful to see so many students dressed in House colours for the occasion. Results will be announced at our End of Term assemblies. Our four Houses are: Falcons Gazelles Camels Scorpions Red Green White Black

4 Guinness World Record Attempt Congratulations to our 30 students who made the trip to Dubai with Mr Rhys, Miss Courtenay and Miss Susan in order to participate in a new World Record! To celebrate UAE s 44 th National Day, GEMS schools and GEMS managed schools successfully achieved another Guinness World Record for the UAE by making the World s Largest Sentence using Humans. Our students contributed to the sentence Happy National Day along with some 8,000 students from GEMS schools. Commemoration Day On the 30 th November, the school commemorated this occasion by lowering the UAE flag at 8.30am. All students gathered outside for one minute of silence at 11.30am and then sang the National Anthem as the flag was raised. All students attended an assembly based on the commemoration of those that have given their lives for the Union. World Arabic Language Day In advance of World Arabic Language Day on the 18 th December, we have engaged children in quizzes and classroom activities to commemorate this occasion. The quiz is available on the school website for those that wish to test themselves!

5 REMINDER: School Uniform Thank you to all parents for trying to make sure their children are coming to school in correct foot wear and uniform and without trolley bags. We are aware that some items of uniform are not easily available and we are negotiating with ZAKS, our uniform supplier. To visit the school to set up a stall on specific dates. REMINDER: Catering Payments There are still some parents that have not signed up for on-line payments to Keita, our school catering company. Details of how to make payments are posted on the school website. Unless outstanding bills are settled immediately and money is added to your child s card, he or she will not be able to eat food from the cafeteria.
