1 Transport of excepted lithium batteries by TNT Express Recently regulations for sending lithium batteries and goods containing this type of batteries have changed. TNT Express pays close attention to the strict adherence to the transport procedures. Why are lithium batteries dangerous goods? Lithium batteries (or cells), used as a source for current in electronic appliances, are classified as dangerous goods due to the risk of overheating and combustion under certain circumstances. What are lithium batteries? There are two categories of lithium batteries: Lithium ION batteries/cells These are rechargeable batteries/cells used in electronic devices such as laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players, GPS/navigation systems and photo and video cameras. Lithium METAL batteries/cells These are non-rechargeable batteries/cells usually found in small electronic devices as there are watches, thermometers, calculators, car keys etc. Should you want to send a lithium battery (loose or packed), please contact Customer Services on (BE), (LUX) or (NL). 2 What is the maximum consignment capacity? Weight restrictions differ with the network used for transport (via air or road) and whether the lithium battery is either loose or integrated in a device. Will I have to pay a surcharge? Yes. You pay a surcharge for each parcel containing a lithium battery. TNT Express is bound to keep a close watch on the strict adherence to the new procedures and regulations. Lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods, which demands extra attention during handling. For instance, they have to be separated from other parcels and are as such not handled via the automated network. The packaging has to be manually checked, whilst ensuring all regulations are applied the correct way. Lastly, not everyone can pick up dangerous goods (the driver needs to be accredited for handling dangerous goods) nor handle them (TNT Express appointed dangerous goods nominees ). Only when everything is legally compliant and safe for transport, the parcel is good to be handled. All non-compliant consignments will be blocked for transport.

3 What is the correct way to send a parcel containing lithium batteries? Sending lithium batteries requires specific security ensuring measures. An overview: 1. CLASSIFICATION All lithium batteries (cells) have to be correctly classified (UN UN UN UN3091) and checked whether they can be transported as excepted lithium battery parcels. Please consult the overview table. 2. FILL OUT THE CONSIGNMENT NOTE CORRECTLY Ensure you fill out the following parts: The Collection Address (4) has to mention the shipper s telephone number. Dangerous goods (7): please tick Yes. Special Instructions (9) a correct declaration needs to be provided. The law clearly prescribes regulations for consignments destined for air transport and road or sea transport. Please pay close attention to these regulations whilst filling out your consignment note. 4 3. use the sticker During transport, the packaging of parcels containing excepted lithium batteries has to be clearly marked: Transport by air: dangerous goods sticker obligatory. Transport by road: use of this sticker is not obligatory, however highly recommended, since the information has to be stuck on the packaging manually otherwise. You can order the dangerous goods stickers via Customer Services on (BE), (LUX) or (NL). attention The information on the sticker needs to be provided as follows: Please tick Lithium ION battery or Lithium METAL battery Please fi ll out the telephone number to contact for more information about the parcel and its content. Exception! Labelling/marking is not required for parcels with 4 cells or 2 (or less) batteries installed in a device/appliance. 5. PaY extra attention to PacKaGiNG As with any category of dangerous goods, you will have to pay extra attention to the packaging of lithium batteries. Here are some tips: LOOse cells/batteries Always pack these individually! Each cell or battery has to be packed in an inner wrap which completely encloses the cell/battery. Each cell/battery has to be protected from causing a shortcut. The outside packaging has to withstand a 1.2 m drop in whichever direction without damaging the batteries and/or without the content having moved in such a way that contact between batteries, or between batteries and cells; or between cells is possible, and/or without loss of content. batteries/cells installed in a device The device s wrapping has to be able to prevent any accidental activation. Each cell/battery has to be protected from causing a shortcut. Unless the device itself already offers comparable protection, the device has to be packed in a strong outside casing made out of adequate material, which offers suffi cient strength and which design suffi ces for the volume and intended use of the packaging. 4. enclose the transport document FOr Lithium batteries with the consignment NOte For each parcel containing a lithium battery, a transport document listing certain information has to be provided. A template of this transport document is enclosed with this leafl et. can i send more than 1 ParceL in the same PacKaGiNG? Individual parcels complying with the regulations can be consolidated. Exception! This transport document is not required for parcels with 4 cells or 2 batteries (or less) installed in a device/appliance. You wish to send lithium batteries?
