1 LOGISTICS STUDIES IN LUXEMBURG Over the past few years, Luxembourg has continuously improved its positioning as an intercontinental logistics hub in Europe especially for contract, air and rail freight-based logistics activities. Today, Luxembourg has initiated a multi-product specialisation within its logistics sector by focusing on certain types of products requiring specific managing and/or storage solutions. Source: [ A SECURE JOB YOU WILL LOVE ] With an increase in the freight and associated growth in the industry, the demand for skilled people with transport and supply/distribution experience is increasing. Logistics management requires a broad skill set and experience, which requires time and commitment to build. A lack of awareness of the career paths available is a significant barrier. Logistics management is also becoming more advanced. There is a shortage of these skills due to rapid growth in the industry and the desire of organisations to make their processes more efficient. This is in response to consumers who are increasingly demanding faster delivery of goods in a very competitive environment. Supply of skilled workers is not meeting demand.
2 WHAT IS LOGISTICS? In Luxembourg, the most apparent pillar of logistics can be said to be movement of goods. The underlying purpose of logistics, all things considered, is to get cargo from one point to its final destination. Cargo can range from consumer products, highly perishable goods, raw materials headed for factories, medical waste or supplies and many others. Logistics therefore entails identifying the optimal mode of transportation to get goods to where they need to go. Taking into consideration issues of time, cost, availability and even distance in the case of exports or imports, deciding on the logistics of moving cargo means choosing between ROAD, AIR, SEA, RAIL TRAVEL or a combination of them for multi modal transport. YOUR JOB - YOUR CAREER
3 WHO IS INVOLVED? The shipper The job of a shipper is to ensure the delivery of the freight to their customer (whether internal or external) in the right condition, at the right time, at the right price, legally, and in the most efficient way that optimises the supply chain (i.e. balancing risk with costs the company is willing to bear). The forwarder A freight forwarder, forwarder, or forwarding agent, also known as a non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC), is a person or company that organizes shipments for individuals or corporations to get goods from the manufacturer or producer to a market, customer or final point of distribution. Forwarders contract with a carrier to move the goods. The carrier A person or company who transports freight for a fee. There are various methods of shipping goods; by air, road, sea, or rail. Some companies offer multi-modal solutions, this means that they offer more than one service, in many cases air and sea and in other cases air, sea, and road. The most common multi-modal way of shipping is referred to as inter-modal meaning truck pickup to rail to truck delivery. The broker A person who makes freight shipping arrangements on behalf of a person or company. The broker has experience in the industry and negotiates the best possible shipping rates on behalf of the client. The warehouse A storage facility within a warehouse management system that is part of a supply chain. The warehouse is located in the most centrally located position to afford a shipping agent the ability to temporarily house shipments for distribution to other warehouse facilities or final shipping destination. Specialized companies Besides the already mentioned parties, there are as well other companies like the Dangerous Goods Handling companies or the IATA Training School & Center offering trainings and courses.
4 WHY LOGISTICS? BIG FAMILY DIVERSIFICATION GLOBAL Working in Luxemburg in Logistics means that you are part of a big family. Getting to know all the family members is a fast process. It s a people s business and all the players are within a short distance of each other. Most of them offer their services at or around the Luxair Cargo Center, ideally placed in the center of Luxembourg. Logistics means diversification. No boring routines, but each day brings up new challenges which you have to face. Be prepared to work in an interesting and changing environment where your improvisation skills are needed on a daily basis. Think global. Your local work has a global impact. Whatever job you do in logistics, it will contribute to the success of your company. Logistic companies act worldwide and everyone is an important link in the supply chain. CHALLENGING NEW EXPERIENCE RESPONSIBLITY Each day will give you new challenges. Your will be asked to solve problems, even before they come up. Your job is to make sure that everything get s delivered at the right time with the right quality to the right place. If something goes wrong, fix it. Sometimes, improvisation might be the key to success. Goods are distributed worldwide. The logistics sectors offers you many possibilities, according to your job and experience, to get in contact with different cultures, people, languages, etc. In logistics, you will get a better understanding of the world and the way it works. Wether you work in the office, in the warehouse or in the transport, you are responsible for the success of your company. In every stage of the service process you assume the responsibility that time, place and quality of a shipment are met, considering all relevant rules and regulations.
