3 Learning Objectives Review of brain function and anatomy as it relates to your stroke Learn what neuroplasticity means and why it is important Learn how your brain recovers after a stroke and how you can help in this recovery Learn about the roles of the interprofessional team who will be caring for you

4 What are the possible impairments you might experience from a stroke? Physical Weakness on one side of the body Sensory changes such as numbness or pain Coordination problems Motor planning (apraxia) Difficulty seeing to one side ( homonymous hemianopsia)

5 What are the possible impairments you might experience from a stroke? Cognitive/Language Problems thinking(memory, attention, visuospatial problems) Difficulty talking and or understating (aphasia) Perception, neglect and insight

6 What are the possible impairments you might experience from a stroke? Emotional Depression/anxiety Emotional lability Personality changes ( inhibition, apathy)

9 How does brain recovery work? Natural healing process (weeks) New sprouting of nerves/remediation (3 6 months >years) Compensation techniques(anytime)

11 Remediation Remediation (3-6 months > years) THE MORE = THE BETTER THE EARLIER=THE BETTER Brain is constantly changing/ remodelling practice is essential

12 Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)

13 Things you can do to help: Touch your affected limb, try different textures Move your affected limb or even imagine moving it Have people sit/talk to you from your affected side Do the homework your therapist has provided ( puzzles, brain teasers) Try to do as much as you can safely do by yourself

14 Things you can do: Try to avoid feeling frustrated with your body it is doing the best it can Celebrate your gains! Remember it can be a long slow process but there continues to be hope throughout your recovery

15 Compensation Techniques Walkers, canes Blackberry, IPhone Watches, beepers Memory books Blister packs for you medication Computers ( eg: touch screen and voice) New ways of doing old things

16 Tips- for positioning Hemiplegic Shoulder: Bed positioning Transfers (never pull on your affected arm) Seated positioning (lap tray, pillow) Don t raise arm passively above should height

18 Physiotherapy Promote natural movement recovery and discourage abnormal movements Increase independence and safety in mobility(walking, stairs, transfers) Stretching and strengthening of limbs Helps you improve your endurance, balance Provides strategies for managing pain

19 Occupational Therapy ADL = activities of daily living e.g. cognition, dressing, eating, transfers, hygiene/bathing iadls = instrumental e.g. shopping, housekeeping, financial management, cooking, driving/ttc Community integration e.g. working, hobbies, social activities Prevention of complications e.g. positioning, pressure relief Adaptive equipment eg bath bench, wheelchair prescription & funding, use of computers

21 Tips Eliminate distractions Keep it simple! Maintain a structured routine Use memory aids(calendar, memory book) Remember that difficulty starting a task is not always a sign of laziness
