1 CHS 360: Disability Issues in Health Ecology Spring, 2015 Thursday 5:30-8:15 p.m. CMM 111 (Note: this lecture hall is in the Whittemore Peterson Institute) Instructor: Robbin Vasquez Office: LR 232 Phone: Mission of the School of Community Health Sciences The School of Community Health Sciences is committed to the exploration, understanding, and promotion of health and wellness across the life span through education, research, and community outreach to assist with the improvement of the health of our university, our community, our state, our nation, and our world. No prerequisites other than Junior/Senior standing Core Objectives CO10 Diversity & Equity: Students will demonstrate an understanding of diversity through courses that focus on topics such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, physical ability, language, and/or social class with an emphasis on the analysis of equity. Students will apply and evaluate approaches or modes of inquiry used to analyze diversity and equity and the social barriers to these goals. CO 12 Ethics: Students will demonstrate understanding of the ethical principles in general or in application of specialized knowledge, results of research, creative expression, or design processes. Students will demonstrate an ability to recognize, articulate, and apply ethical principles in various academic, professional, social, or personal contexts. Purpose/Course Objectives This course is designed to help students gain awareness of and sensitivity to the issues related to people with disabilities. The course will provide an overview of disability issues from ethical, historical, philosophical, physiological, psychological and sociological perspectives. Both Core Objectives 10 & 12 are integrated throughout this course. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate: Awareness of your own attitudes towards individuals with disabilities (CO 10) Knowledge of the principles of self-determination and inclusion Knowledge of the history of services to people with disabilities (CO 12) Knowledge of current trends, laws and issues Knowledge of the principles and issues of advocacy and self-advocacy (CO12) Knowledge of assistive technology and universal design Knowledge of services to people with disabilities and how they continue to change A multidisciplinary understanding of disability Date Topic (subject to change) Assignments Due (Points) Note: There is no text for this class 1

During class, it is expected that courtesy and respect will be shown towards classmates and the instructor. Failure to do so will impact class participation points. All written assignments must be typed in a standard 12-point font (Times, Arial, etc.) and double spaced with one-inch margins, unless otherwise noted. All written assignments will be graded on content, clarity, synthesis of ideas, and writing style (organization, works cited, grammar, punctuation and spelling). Plagiarism is stealing the words, thoughts, ideas, organization, or data of another person without giving proper credit. Plagiarism includes taking ideas without credit, copying words without quotation marks and citations, paraphrasing without credits, and using facts, statistics, graphics, etc. that is not common knowledge without giving proper credit. Plagiarism can be avoided by using quotation marks, citations, summarizing information using your own words or thoughts, etc. As is the policy of the School of Public Health, an assignment that has been plagiarized (in part or whole) will receive a 2

3 grade of F for the assignment on the first offense. If there is a second case of plagiarism, the student will receive an F for the course and be reported to University officials. It is expected that each student will conduct him or herself with the guidelines of the honor system. All academic work must be done with the high level of honesty and integrity that this University demands. There will be no make-up exams without an official, written statement of need for the absence by a doctor, Dean, etc. If you are sick or have a conflict, please contact the instructor prior to the exam. Late work will be 10% lower per day late. No late work accepted after one week. NO assignments will be accepted after May 7, Paper Grading Criteria Format Formatting and method of citations should be based upon your major discipline. Submission All assignments except the Community Placement Form and Community Accessibility Checklist are to be submitted via Webcampus in a.pdf,.rtf, or.doc file before the beginning of the class on the day specified. Please be sure they are submitted as an attachment and not typed into the comments section. Grades See grading rubric for specific assignment Course Requirements Below is a summary of all assignments due. Further discussion will be given in class. If assignment expectations are still not clear after discussion, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor prior to the assignment due date for clarification. Weekly Quiz/Class Attendance Readings will be assigned each week for the following class. A short quiz will be given on the readings each week. This quiz is worth 3 points for a total of 33 points for the class. Attendance is important as these quizzes cannot be made up. If a class must be missed due to illness or other prearranged issues, the student is still responsible for the readings. Extra credit will be offered throughout the semester (up to 9 points). Regular class attendance is expected and roll will be taken in addition to the quizzes. Community Accessibility Assignment (15 points) Due: March 5 Each student will complete an ADA accessibility checklist of a locally run business, facility, or nongovernmental agency. The business cannot be located on the UNR campus. Please submit the completed checklist and a double-spaced, typed summary of at least two (2) pages in length with your findings and recommendations. 3

4 Individual Issue Exploration (15 points) Due: April 2 Choose a topic or issue from class that interests you, and submit a paper of at least three (3) pages in length that includes additional information about the issue, along with a minimum of two (2) citations. Further instructions will be given in class. Experiential Exercise and Analysis (20 points) Due: April 23 The meaning of disability is best found in the study of people and their lived lives. A key component of this course is about being exposed to and sharing in moments of daily life of people with disabilities. You are required to have a minimum of 10 contact hours of active engagement with people with disabilities. A list of options will be provided, but the experience(s) must be arranged by you. (CO 10 & 12) a) You must submit the signed placement form no later than February 5 th. If you choose to turn in this form late, one point will be deducted for each day after the 5 th. b) If the final paper and log reflect a different experience than what was originally approved, you will automatically lose 5 points from the assignment. c) You must keep a typed or handwritten log of experiences to turn in with the paper. The log must contain a brief summary of each volunteer experience and enough information for you to write a four-page analysis of the experiences. Throughout the analysis, students should tie volunteer experiences to topics, articles, guest speaker topics and discussions from CHS 360. d) The final assignment is due on April 23rd. Submit both the four page retrospective analysis, the signed volunteer form and the log (please scan/photograph and upload log if it is handwritten). Mid-Term (10 points) March 12 Final (16 points) May 7 Extra Credit: Attendance at Events Focused on Disabilities (3 points each) Due: April 30 Events during the semester will be posted in the Announcements section on WebCampus. Students will attend the event and submit a two page summary referencing topics from class as they apply to the event and reflecting on the experience (along with supporting documentation, if applicable). Grading Scale for Final Class Grade: Points: = A = C = A = C = B = C = B = D = B- Below 60 = F 4

Please bring a laptop, tablet or Smartphone to every class. Technology use in class will be allowed as long as it is professional and does not interfere with your classmate s learning. Statement on Audio and Video Recording Surreptitious or covert video-taping of class or unauthorized audio recording of class is prohibited by law and by Board of Regents policy. This class may be videotaped or audio recorded only with the written permission of the instructor. In order to accommodate students with disabilities, some students may have been given permission to record class lectures and discussions. Therefore, students should understand that their comments during class may be recorded. Inclement Weather Class may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Please check WebCampus and your if it looks like it may be too dangerous to drive up the hill. If cancelled, the weekly quiz will be given online and the class PowerPoint will be posted. Students will be responsible for the information. 5
