5 Czech PhilharmOnic The Czech Philharmonic is enjoying a renewed reputation as one of the most exciting ensembles on the world stage. It performs with artists including Hélène Grimaud, Lang Lang, Janine Jansen, and Anne-Sophie Mutter, and was joined by Garrick Ohlsson, Frank Peter Zimmermann and Alisa Weilerstein to record Dvořák s three concertos, under Jiří Bělohlávek, to be released in June 2014 by Decca, together with the orchestra s recordings of the composer s nine symphonies. Dvořák himself conducted the orchestra in its debut performance in 1896 at the Rudolfinum in Prague, which is still home to its Prague concerts, and is the centre for its Orchestral Academy. The Academy is just one of many education projects through which the Czech Philharmonic engages with new audiences. The Czech Philharmonic performs in the world s most prestigious concert halls, including regular appearances at Berlin s Philharmonie, Tokyo s Suntory Hall, New York s Carnegie Hall, Beijing s NCPA, and Vienna s Musikverein, to name but a few. Festival appearances include, among others, the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh Festival. With its Chief Conductor, Jiří Bělohlávek, the Czech Philharmonic has undertaken successful tours in Croatia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and the UK. The Czech Philharmonic welcomes many distinguished guest conductors, including Herbert Blomstedt, Semyon Bychkov, Valery Gergiev, Fabio Luisi, Robin Ticciati, and David Zinman. In addition to concluding a major contract with Decca, the Czech Philharmonic has also started collaborating with UNITEL, which has co-produced and will distribute worldwide the orchestra s audiovisual recordings of all Dvořák symphonies as well as a documentary about Dvořák, Bělohlávek, and the current work of the Czech Philharmonic itself. Further exciting projects include competitions for both composers and soloists. In seeking to foster new talent, the Czech Philharmonic continues its journey into the future, a future which looks brighter than ever. Joanna Wyld,
