3 WORD STUDY Spelling Formal spelling lessons will begin 8 weeks after the start of school. Each lesson includes a required List and an optional Challenge List. We are also responsible for 20 Lifetime Words. Making Words Word Wall Phonemic Awareness Handwriting
4 Beginning Reading Expectations Students should read or be read to often, daily if possible! Recognize and produce rhyming words Recognize and name all upper and lower case letters rapidly Understand that readers look carefully at words Use a good voice-print match when reading familiar books Recognize most familiar sounds for consonants
5 What is Ahead in First Grade Reading? Sight word list containing 124 high frequency words The Word Solvers Tool Kit 1. Look at the picture. 2. Get your mouth ready. 3. Look across the word. 3. What do I know? 4. Chunk the word. 5. Look into the word. 6. What other sound can I try? 7. Does it make sense? 8. Skip the word and read on.

8 WRITING Participate in writing workshop daily. Mini-lesson followed by independent writing Students will be encouraged to actively use the word wall. Students will be encouraged to use First Grade Spelling say the word slowly and write all the sounds they hear.

11 Writing Expectations By the end of the year students should be able to choose a topic and write multiple l sentences 1. that express a complete thought 2. that have appropriate ending punctuation 3. using capital letters where needed 4. using proper word spacing 5. using word wall words spelled correctly First Grade spelling is okay!

20 EXPLANATION OF SCALE Receiving letter grades on a report card will be a new experience for your first grade child this year. In our grading g system four factors are considered: 1) ability to work independently 2) individual improvement, 3) quality of work 4) consistency of performance.
21 EXPLANATION OF SCALE Grades are given for many different things; worksheets, participation in class discussions,,guided reading ggroups, tests, cooperative games, books made in class, etc. The grade your child receives on his/her report card will reflect all of these activities.
22 EXPLANATION OF SCALE A grade of E indicates that your child listens carefully to directions the first time they are given and independently completes work without additional explanation or reminders consistently understands new instructional concepts consistently produces high-quality work consistently uses understanding of new concepts in other related areas consistently demonstrates problem solving and creative thinking skills
23 EXPLANATION OF SCALE A grade of S indicates that your child may need directions to be repeated or additional explanations given. Listening skills are satisfactory at this time, but are still developing. usually understands new instructional concepts usually produces satisfactory work usually uses understanding of new concepts in other related areas shows evidence of problem solving and creative thinking skills
24 EXPLANATION OF SCALE A grade of U indicates that your child requires frequent individual help to complete work; has poor listening skills requires significant modifications to the assignments in order to be successful produces work of inconsistent quality needs frequent re-teaching and additional practice is not able to apply understanding of new concepts in other related areas.
25 EXPLANATION OF SCALE Please note that not all assignments receive a letter grade. Many papers are simply pypractice work completed with the group and will be given a star, smiley face, sticker, etc.
