1 Toddlers Curriculum Unit Five: Winter Wonders Week 1: A New Year The Bible is a special book. The Bible helps us to know the right things to do. God made me. I can make choices. Bible Thoughts There is a time for everything and a season for every activity on earth. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) God gave you ears to hear and eyes to see. (Proverbs 20:12) There is a time to talk and a time to listen. (Ecclesiastes 3:7) Read Lonely Jeremiah pgs in My Favorite Bible Storybook. Social Studies Talk about the New Year. Review class rules. Talk about birthdays. Opposites - New/Old o o Emphasize Ww for winter Point out letters and things that begin /w/ The Children whose names begin with W Children who have w in their name. Words, pictures, labels, and objects that begin with /w/ Add theme related pictures and words to the word book. Categorize the pictures according to the beginning letter. Vocabulary horn, party, hat, winter o Count up to 3 objects using one-to-one correspondence. Colors Introduce blue and add blue to the color wall Shapes Introduce the triangle and add the triangle to the shape wall Paint at the easel with blue paint Make party hats Listen to CDs and move creatively to music

2 Cooking Make a special snack and call it New Year s Nosh Dramatic Play Add New Year s party hats Use blocks to build a school Science/Discovery o Add winter pictures o Add a calendar o Add pine cones Toys and Games Add theme and/or concept related activities /Writing Add old calendars that can be used for making collages Weeks 2 & 3: Winter Wonders God made things for people to enjoy. God made winter. God made winter weather. God made the snow. Bible Thought - God spreads the snow like wool. (Psalm 147:16) Science and Social Studies Discuss winter weather Talk about winter clothing and include the opposites, hot /cold, up/down, and on/off in the discussions Discuss winter activities such as making a snowman. o Emphasize Zz for zipper and zip o Point out letters and things that begin /z/ The Children whose names begin with Z Children who have z in their name. Words, pictures, labels, and objects that begin with /z/ Add theme related pictures and words to the word book. Categorize the pictures according to the beginning letter. Vocabulary snowflake, snowman, hat, mittens, boots, hat, scarf o Count up to 3 objects using one-to-one correspondence Colors Continue blue. Exposure to white Classification P lay sorting games with colors Each child can paste 3 white snowflakes on blue paper. Make a snowman. Use large and small circles. Also use black squares for the snowmen s hats.

3 Cooking Ideas: Marshmallow snowmen, snow cream, snowballs, etc. Winter Weather (tune: Are You Sleeping? ) Snow is Falling (tune: Mary had a Little Lamb ) The Snowman (drama) Dramatic Play Add winter hats and snow boots o Use blocks to build a snow fort o Add cotton balls and white cotton that is used at Christmas time to create snow scenes for decorations Science/Discovery Add winter pictures and pine cones Toys and Games Add a theme or concept related activity /Writing Add materials for making snowmen and snow scenes such as cotton balls, purple and white construction paper, white paint, Styrofoam balls of varying sizes, etc. Week 4: Animals in Winter Christian studies God made animals. God feeds the animals. God takes care of the animals. I can care for the things that God made. Bible Thought - The animals go into their dens. The cold comes from the blowing wind. (Job 37:8-9) Read Queen Ester s Courage pgs in My Favorite Bible Storybook. Science/Discovery Talk about the animals that hibernate. Talk about the animals that do not hibernate. Discuss ways to help animals survive the winter months. Feed the birds. Opposites asleep/awake o Emphasize Qq for quiet and quilt o Point out Qq and things that begin with /kw/ as you come across them throughout the day The Children whose names begin with Q. Children who have q in their name. Words, pictures, labels, and objects that begin with /q/ o Add theme related pictures and words to the word book. o Categorize the pictures according to the beginning letter. Vocabulary bear, deer, squirrel, bird o Count up to 3 objects using one-to-one correspondence.

4 Colors o Continue blue o Exposure to white Make bear puppets. Use paper bags or socks Hibernating Song (tune: Are You Sleeping? ) Cooking Cold Day Cocoa Dramatic Play Add winter hats and snow boots o Add bears and other forest animals o Use blocks to create caves o Add cotton balls and white cotton that is used at Christmas to create snow scenes for decorations o Add paper and blue crayons and markers Science/Discovery Pine cones Toys and Games Add theme related materials that will reinforce math and language concepts /Writing Add materials for making animals and animal puppets such as pre-cut bear heads, brown and black paint, Styrofoam balls of varying sizes, paper bags, socks etc. Week 5: Polar Bears and Penguins God made animals. God made water and ice. Bible Thoughts o God breathes and the water freezes. (Job 37:10) o God gives his command and the ice melts. (Psalm 147:18) Science/Social Studies Discuss where polar bears and penguins live. Polar bears and penguins live where it is very cold and icy. Observe ice. How does ice feel? Watch it melt. Include the opposites hot/cold, wet/dry in the discussions. o Emphasize Ii for ice o Point out letters and things that begin with /i/ The Children whose names begin with I Children who have i in their name. Words, pictures, labels, and objects that begin with /i / o Add theme related pictures and words to the word book. o Categorize the pictures according to the beginning letter. Vocabulary penguin, polar bear, ice icicles

5 o Count up to 3 theme related objects using one-to-one-correspondence Colors Continue blue Make construction paper penguins. Make a winter picture using aluminum foil for ice. Make polar bears. Paste white cotton balls on a polar bear shape Listen to CDs and move creatively. Sing songs about polar bears and penguins. Use fingerplays about polar bears and penguins.
