2 History of KCAA KCAA was established on 24 th October 2002 with the primary functions of providing: 1. Safety & Security Regulation And Oversight 2. Economic Regulation Of Air Services 3. Provision Of Air Navigation Services 4.Provision Of Aviation Training (thro EASA) 2

6 Overview of Safety Directorate (Regulatory Function) The main function of this directorate is to ensure enforcement of aviation safety and security oversight, and carry out economic regulation of the industry in Kenya. This function is discharged through six departments, namely; 6

7 Regulatory Function Flight Operations: Responsible for aircraft operation safety oversight, approval and monitoring of AOC s Airworthiness: Responsible for over seeing airworthiness of aircraft licensing of AMOs, Personnel Licensing: Responsible for aircraft registration, aviation personnel licensing and Aviation Training Org. certification; Aviation Security: Responsible for oversight of Aviation Security Aerodrome, ANS and Meteorology: Responsible for certification and surveillance of aerodromes, ANS operations and aviation meteorology; Air Transport: Responsible for economic regulation of the air transport sector, issuance of air service licenses, ad hoc clearances and aircraft lease approvals. 7

8 Overview of Air Navigation Directorate KCAA through its Air Navigation Services (ANS) Directorate provides air traffic control service to ensure a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of aircraft movements within the Nairobi Flight Information Region (FIR). ANS is made up of the following departments: Air Traffic Control Services: Airspace planning & management. Control of flying aircraft. Aeronautical Information Services: deals with information to airmen, flight planning, mapping etc. Engineering Services: planning, installation and maintenance of navigation equipment and related systems. 8

9 Overview of The East African School of Aviation (EASA) KCAA through the East African School of Aviation (EASA) provides quality training both for KCAA staff and external students pursuing aviation related programmes. Some of the courses offered include: Air Traffic Control, Engineering, Aviation Management e.g. MBA, BBM, Diploma airport management and many more. 9

10 States Served Since its inception, EASA has trained over 10,000 trainees in various fields from several States from Africa, Asia and Europe. 14 EASA: Future Development Plan to establish a Flight School EASA is in collaboration with both National and International partners is working towards establishment of pilot training school. Development of a Bachelors Degree in Aeronautical Engineering In is collaboration with Moi University with the aim of the programme being offered jointly by the two institutions. Construction of a world class training & Convention centre EASA is in collaboration with both National and International partners is working towards establishment of a Training & Convention 14 Centre

23 Some KCAA Milestones KCAA has reviewed a majority of regulations relating to KCAA s operations in response to standards & recommended practices of ICAO.
