1 Patrice Smith 4/4/16 4/8/16 Monday, April 4, 2016 Lesson Plans PA significance of Puritan, Cavalier, Age of Reason, and Romantic literature; Students will revisit last week s 17 th Century-18 th Century and Romanticism literature evaluation, go over answers, refresh their memories on what we have read to date, and then begin narrowing their choices for a British or World Author for an eventual Literary Criticism research project. Reminder: Bring Vocabulary for Achievement for tomorrow, introduction of last three lessons. Students will revisit last week s 17 th Century-18 th Century and Romanticism literature evaluation, go over answers, refresh their memories on what we have read to date, and then begin narrowing their choices for a Poetry Analysis/Song Critique research project. Reminder: Bring Advancing Vocabulary Skills tomorrow, introduction of next two lessons. MODIFICATIONS: For Aca Eng. 12 and Bas. Eng. 12, teacher guides students through vocabulary words; teacher reads aloud, offers more examples to Bas 12 students, makes more concrete and specific suggestions Each course offers vocabulary series geared to student ability and interest. Students will read The Importance of Being Earnest as a reader s theater, noting ways to respond to previously distributed conversation topics. Reminder: one essay comparing/utilizing both Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray will be written next week. Students will rehearse their Dramatic Duos for presentation tomorrow in Mr. Baker s classroom. resolution, begin research on their chosen topics, and assign specific debate roles to the four group members.

2 Lesson Plans Smith 4/4/16 2 Tuesday, April 5, 2016 PA VOCABULARY STANDARDS STANDARDS: Roots and affixes: R11.A and R11.A.1.2.2; Synonyms and Antonyms: R11.A Syntax and parts of speech: R11.A.1.1.1; R11.A R11.A and R11.A Words in context: R11.A.1.2.1; R11.A.1.2.2; R11.A R11 A.1.1.2; R11 A.2.1.1; R11 A : How do word roots and affixes alter meaning in English words? How can one determine meaning from context? How do synonyms and antonyms help define a word? How does familiarity with parts of speech help in understanding and using vocabulary words? How do connotation and denotation differ in English words? Students will brainstorm connotations and denotations of new vocabulary words in Vocabulary for Achievement Units 28 through 30; students will complete exercises independently and be prepared for a spelling and objective quiz the week of April 11. Independently, students are narrowing focus and selecting a British or world author for sustained thematic analysis and MLA-formatted researched essay. Reminder: Meet in Library Lab tomorrow to launch Brit. Lit. Crit. Reading and Research assignment. Same as, except that students use Advancing Vocabulary Skills Units 19 and 20; Exercises should be under way, due end of this week. Reminder: bring a song lyric to class tomorrow to begin process of Song analysis. AP English Students will complete reader s theater rendition of The Importance of Being Earnest and begin mining its deeper implications, historic context, and themes and applying them to The Picture of Dorian Gray. MODIFICATIONS: For both Aca Eng. 12 and Academic 11 and Bas. Eng. 11, teacher guides students through the strengths and weaknesses of each activity or presentation; teacher makes more concrete and specific suggestions to Basic English students. Students will present Dramatic Duo performances for the Drama Class today; evaluated on the basis of Selection, Comprehension, use of Voice, Body, and Overall Effect. Academic English Students will meet in LHS Library Computer lab to launch research and reading project on a major British or World Author and one significant work. Students may find all the paper s requirements on the teacher website under Brit. Lit. Crit. Reminder: the sooner the student selects his/her author and primary text, the more time s/he has to read and research. Students will copy their song lyrics into a Google Doc and begin labeling them for rhyme, rhythm, metaphor, sound effects, etc. They may also begin drafting the essay which will explain the song s primary messages thematic analysis - and textual support for their choices. Students will silently read The Picture of Dorian Gray and take notes based on the previously distributed discussion/essay prompts comparing both Wilde texts: Dorian Gray with Earnest. MODIFICATIONS: For both Aca Eng. 12 and Bas. Eng. 12, teacher guides students through the strengths and weaknesses of research processes; teacher makes more concrete and specific suggestions to students Students will commit to an Informative #2 topic and research background on their selection; Info #2 tentatively due next week. 4 Lesson Plans Smith 4/4/16 4 Students remain in LHS Library and, having selected a preferred British or World Author, will search for preferred full-length work (play or novel) or collection of short stories or poems for thematic critical analysis. Students will complete exercises for Vocabulary Units 19 and 20 and will mine their song lyrics for poetic devices and literary elements; reminder: Vocab. 19 and 20 quiz scheduled for Friday, April 8. Eng. 12, teacher guides students through the strengths and weaknesses of each presentation; teacher makes more concrete and specific Students continue to research their Informative #2 topics for further content and accompanying art work. Friday, April 8, 2016 B Day, Clubs significance of Victorian and Modern prose and poetry Last day in LHS Library Lab for Brit. Lit. Crit. Research, third day focusing on locating necessary text(s) and relevant critical support. Research project in MLA format is due May 2. MODIFICATIONS: For both Aca Eng. 12 and Aca and Bas. Students will assess knowledge and comprehension of Advancing Vocabulary Skills Lessons 19 and 20 through teacher-made spelling and objective quiz. Students apply Wilde discussion prompts to both Dorian Gray and Earnest; homework: Essay Frames to be collected Monday. Evaluated on the basis of clear concise thesis and at least three examples of textual support from BOTH texts (six total). Students will commit to a thesis statement and at least three subsections of their Informative #2, to be polished and practiced next week, delivered the week of April 18.
