Working Safely at Heights Course Code: RIIWHS204D 1 Day SpanSet Australia s nationally accredited Work Safely at Heights course has been structured to provide candidates with the necessary practical skills and theoretical understanding to undertake work at height on a broad range of structures and differing environments; as well as working safely in the vicinity of unprotected edges or on steep ground. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will gain knowledge of: Legislation and governance material relating to working at height What defines work at height Hazard analysis and risk assessment Control measures for working at height Categories for working at height (work restraint, work positioning, fall arrest) Legal requirements for equipment inspection and record keeping Compliance, strengths and characteristics of height safety equipment Legal necessity for provision for rescue capability. Correct inspection, fitting and adjustment of harness (including suspension in harness) Participation in SWMS to control risks for working at height Selection, setup and rigging of anchor straps and slings work restraint techniques Pre-use inspection and use of single/twin leg fall arrest lanyards fall arrest blocks/inertia reels. temporary horizontal safety lines height safety connectors to rescue using a pre-rigged workplace rescue system. Where appropriate additional client-specific topics will be covered. 2 Working Safely at Heights Refresher Height Safety and Refresher Course Code: RIIWHS204D 5 hours Prerequisite Existing qualification in Working Safely at Heights (current within last 3 years). Spanset Australia has developed the Working Safely at Heights Refresher course specifically to provide a candidate with an opportunity to update their knowledge, skills and experience when undertaking work activity at height. The legislative framework and guidance materials relating to working at height are dynamic and continually evolving. The course allows candidates on successful completion to have up to date information allowing them to undertake their work activities in view to full compliance. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will gain knowledge of: Legislation and governance material relating to working at height What defines work at height Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment Control measures for working at height Categories for working at height (work restraint, work positioning, fall arrest) Legal requirements for equipment inspection and record keeping Compliance, strengths and characteristics of height safety equipment Legal necessity for provision for rescue capability. The practical component is structured so that the activities undertaken are representative of the work site specifics and tasks that the candidates are exposed to in their work at height. Risk analysis and control is then tailored to this representative work environment. The simulated work activities incorporate the following: Correct inspection, fitting and adjustment of harness (including suspension in harness) Selection, setup and rigging of anchor straps and slings Pre-use inspection, installation and use of work restraint techniques Pre-use inspection and use of single/twin leg fall arrest lanyards fall arrest blocks / inertia reels. temporary horizontal safety lines Pre-use inspection, installation and use of height safety connectors to rescue using a pre-rigged workplace rescue system. 3 Height Safety Manager Height Safety Management Environment ISO 14001:2004 CEM21958 AS 4801:2001 Quality ISO 9001:2008 OHSAS 18001:2007 Height Safety Manager As outlined in AS Course Codes: RIIWHS204D / MEM15004B / PUAOHS001C / PUASAR022A : 3 days Ratio of Trainers to Trainees: 1:6 The course has been structured to provide: Training for people involved in the selection, design, manufacture or installation of height safety equipment and installations Skills to develop control measures for best work practices Criteria for inspection, maintenance, record keeping, storage and withdrawal from service of height safety equipment Technical skills appropriate to task including risk and systems management. Prerequisites PUAEME001B Provide Emergency Care: or Current First Aid/CPR Accreditation. Course Content To be found competent as a Height Safety Manager, candidates will successfully undertake three 1 day qualifications: Work Safely at Height Competent Person Inspection and Record Keeping Rescue Systems Operator. 4 Height Safety Supervisor Height Safety Management Height Safety Supervisor As outlined in AS Course Codes: RIIWHS204D / PUAOHS001C / PUASAR022A : 2 days Ratio of Trainers to Trainees: 1:6 As outlined in the standard a successful candidate will have the ability to work unsupervised, be able to supervise other operators, as well as being able to participate in first response rescue. Prerequisites PUAEME001B Provide Emergency Care: or Current First Aid/CPR Accreditation. Course Content To be found competent as a Height Safety Supervisor, candidates will successfully undertake both 1 day qualifications: Work Safely at Height Rescue Systems Operator. All successful candidates will receive a RIIWHS204D Work Safely at Heights Rescue Systems Operator using the following units of competency: PUAOHS001C Follow Defined Work Health and Safety Policies and Procedures PUASAR022A Participate in a Rescue Operation for all candidates who are successfully deemed competent.
5 Competent Person Inspection & Record Keeping Height Safety Inspector AS/NZS * Recently updated to include all lifting sling gear inspection requirements. Course Code: MEM15004B 1 day Ration of Trainers to Trainees 1:10 SpanSet Australia s Inspection and Record Keeping course has been structured to provide: The necessary skills to adequately perform in the highly responsible role of competent person inspector Techniques to undertake detailed periodic inspection of height safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings in line with Australian Standards guidelines and manufacturers recommendations Knowledge on how to setup and maintain inspection records and equipment registers. Prerequisite It is highly recommended that candidates have completed a qualification in Work Safely at Height; and/or a detailed knowledge of height safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings. Legislation and guidance material relating to the periodic inspection of height safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings Understanding the design, testing, and manufacturing processes for height safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings Analysis of the types and effects of contaminants and sources of degradation of height safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings Techniques by which to inspect and determine viability of equipment and when to remove from service Understanding of the importance of correct quarantine and disposal procedures. Hands-on inspection of a wide range of height safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings Determining signs of degradation, contamination and flaws in equipment samples Deciding on the viability of equipment samples and recording the findings in inspection records/equipment registers. Assessment of Candidates All candidates will carry out a multiple choice test covering the key theoretical elements for the adequate inspection and maintenance of inspection records forheight safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings. If a candidate gets a total score of less than 100% then the trainer will explore the candidates knowledge of the topic. Where the candidate has a good knowledge of the topic the result may be amended. A practical exam will also be completed where candidates will inspect and determine the viability of a range of height safety equipment and synthetic round and flat lifting slings samples and record the results in an equipment register. Statement of Attainment MEM15004B Perform Inspection ID card for all candidates.
6 Rescue Systems Operator Rescue and Evacuation from Heights Environment ISO 14001:2004 CEM21958 AS 4801:2001 Quality ISO 9001:2008 OHSAS 18001:2007 Course Codes: PUAOHS001C / PUASAR022A : 1 Day Ratio of Trainers to Trainees: 1:6 Under the new national codes of practice and regulations, a person conducting a business or undertaking who implements a fall arrest system as a measure to control risk MUST establish emergency and rescue procedures. These procedures need to be rehearsed and tested for effectiveness and include training and instruction for workers. This course has been structured to provide: Candidates with the skills and knowledge to set up and conduct rope rescue of a suspended or injured casualty using a prerigged proprietary rope rescue system The necessary skills to respond to a variety of post-fall rescue situations such as high/ low anchor rescue, casualty evacuation, rescue off inertia reels, rescue off vertical lifelines and off towers, masts or structures. Prerequisites RIIWHS204D Work Safely at Heights; and HLTFA211A Apply First Aid; or PUAEME001B Provide Emergency Care. Legislation Hazard analysis and risk assessment The importance of rescue provision Individual and team safety Anchor points and rigging, including edge protection Rescue techniques Casualty management Inspection and record keeping procedures The use of work restraint and positioning techniques Climbing and structural mobility techniques Understanding simple mechanical advantage AS/NZS and EN Standards. Pre-use inspection, correct fitting and adjustment of fall arrest harnesses and buddy-checks Identification and understanding of supplied rescue kit(s) and its components Basic stretcher rigging techniques The deployment and practical use of a pre-rigged rescue kit to perform post-fall rescue activities using either: Option A (Remote Attachment) A rescue kit with a raising/lowering capability to: Raise a casualty back to safety Lower a casualty back to safety or Option B (Descent Attachment) The use of a self-locking descender to remote lower a casualty to safety The use of a rescue kit containing a selflocking descender to access a casualty and evacuate them down to safety. Assessment of Candidates Written theory assessment with multiple choice and short answer questions. Requires 100% pass mark for competency. assessment requires the candidates to complete a number of rescue techniques including a demonstration of a correct set up of the rescue kit, safe use and post-rescue pack up. Candidates are required to complete these techniques in a reasonable time frame and in a safe manner. During the course of the training, candidates will continue to be verbally and practically assessed by the trainer to ensure they have the necessary understanding and competency required on specific topics and scenarios. Statement of Attainment in: Rescue Systems Operator using the following units of competency: PUAOHS001C Follow Defined Occupational Health and Safety Policies and Procedures PUASAR022A Participate in a Rescue Operation for all candidates who are successfully deemed competent. 7 Gotcha Half Day Gotcha Rescue from Towers, Masts and Structures Half Day Ratio of Trainer to Trainees 1:6 SpanSet s Half-Day Gotcha course has been structured to provide candidates with the site specific knowledge and skills to undertake the rescue of a suspended casualty with a nominated worksite rescue kit. Prerequisite Being a non-accredited course there are no prerequisites; however SpanSet strongly recommends that a one day nationally accredited Work Safely at Heights course is under taken prior to commencement. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will gain knowledge of: Legislation Hazard analysis and risk assessment Individual and team safety Anchor points and rigging, including edge protection Climbing and structural mobility techniques Use of work restraint and positioning techniques Rescue kits and systems, techniques and management. Hazard analysis and risk assessment Correct fitting and adjustment of fall arrest harnesses The use of work positioning systems The use of twin tail lanyards Correct inspection, setup and use of a rescue kit to access a casualty and evacuate to safety Casualty management and care. Assessment Methods There is a written theory assessment with multiple choice and short answer questions. Requires 100% pass mark to achieve competency. assessment requires the candidates to perform rescue exercises on a suspended casualty. Candidates are required to complete these techniques in a reasonable time frame and in a safe manner. During the course all delegates will be continually verbally assessed by the trainer to ensure they have the required understanding and competency required on specific topics and scenarios. All candidates that are deemed competent will receive a Certificate of Attendance and an ID card.
8 Enter Confined Space Confined Space Entry Course Codes: MSAPMPER205C / MSAPMPER200C / MSAPMPER300C / RIIRIS201D / MSAPMOHS217A / RIIWHS202D 2 Days Ratio of Trainers to Trainees 1:10 The course has been structured to provide: working skills for all persons who are required to enter and work in confined spaces. Learners will learn a comprehensive understanding of confined space permit systems, gas detection procedures, roles and responsibilities of standby personnel and the safe use of personal protective equipment Knowledge of legislative requirements when working in confined spaces. Legislation Confined Space Entry Hazard analysis and risk assessment Permit systems Fire Awareness Atmospheric testing Ventilation testing Resuscitation Compressed air breathing apparatus Safety equipment Rescue. Implementation and operation of confined space entry permit system Calibrating and using gas detection equipment Use of confined space entry/ rescue equipment Confined space entry Basic confined space rescue scenarios Confined space work positioning techniques. Assessment Methods Written theory assessment with multiple choice and short answer questions. Requires 100% pass mark for competency. If a candidate gets a total score of less than 100% then the trainer will explore the learners knowledge of the topic.
