2 Melissa Bagloo, M.D., FACS MESSAGE FROM THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR Pursuing weight-loss surgery is a very personal choice, one which patients come to after great deliberation. We believe in taking a personalized approach to care and empowering each patient to make healthy lifestyle changes, whether through surgical options or medically managed weight loss. We provide our patients with the tools to lose weight successfully, maintain their successes and live healthier, fuller lives. Weight loss is a journey, one in which we aim to partner with you at every step. OUR TEAM The team at The Center for Metabolic Surgery and Weight- Loss Management provides a multidisciplinary approach to bariatric surgery and weight-loss management, offering patients personalized surgical options and a full spectrum of support services. For patients who are not candidates for weight-loss surgery, but who are struggling to lose weight on their own, the Center also offers medically managed weight-loss services, including diet, exercise and medication. In addition to our medical director, the patient care team includes a bariatric nutritionist, a nurse practitioner and a dedicated office staff to help our patients throughout their weight-loss journey. Our team also works closely with psychologists, exercise physiologists, wellness coaches and other specialists to ensure our patients obtain the highest level of care and optimize success.
3 YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO GAIN WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO LOSE! We aim to help our patients improve the quality of their health and length of their life. Below are some of the life-changing and life-enhancing benefits that bariatric surgery can provide: Substantial weight loss Improvement or resolution of diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea Reversal of weight-induced infertility Improvement in degenerative disc disease and joint pain Decreased urinary incontinence Increased self-esteem Reduced depression and anxiety Improved overall quality of life WHY CHOOSE VALLEY? The Valley Hospital s Center for Metabolic Surgery and Weight-Loss Management has been named a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This prestigious designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. SERVICES WE PROVIDE Personalized treatment to include medications that assist with weight loss for patients seeking alternatives to surgery Free monthly All About Weight-Loss Surgery seminars Detailed consultations with board-certified surgeons, a board-certified nurse practitioner and a certified bariatric nutritionist Minimally invasive surgical techniques resulting in lower risks and enhanced recovery Free monthly support groups for post-surgical patients Dedicated staff that will guide you through every step of your weight-loss journey
4 WHY CONSIDER TREATMENT NOW? Patients who are morbidly obese are at an increased risk for health problems and tend to have a shortened life span. Weight-loss surgery is an effective option for patients who wish to achieve and maintain successful weight-loss outcomes. At our Center, we will help you explore all of your medical and surgical options and will help you choose the best treatment plan for you. CRITERIA FOR SURGERY Persons who have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40. Persons who have a BMI greater than 35 and life-threatening obesity related problems such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc. Persons who have failed non-surgical attempts at weight loss. SURGICAL OPTIONS Adjustable Gastric Banding is performed by placing a silastic band around the upper part of the stomach; neither the stomach nor the intestine is cut. This creates a small gastric pouch, which limits the amount of food that a patient can eat, resulting in a feeling of fullness after eating small amounts of food. Sleeve gastrectomy is performed by removing approximately 80 percent of the stomach and creating a smaller stomach. Food passes through the digestive system in the usual order and is absorbed normally into the body. Weight loss occurs through decreased portion sizes and changes in the body s gut hormones that control and regulate hunger and satiety.
5 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is performed by creating a small gastric pouch and bypassing a large portion of the stomach and part of the small intestine. The small intestine is then re-routed and connected to the gastric pouch to allow for passage of food into the digestive system. Weight loss occurs through decreased portion sizes, altered absorption of food, and changes in the body s gut hormones that control and regulate hunger and satiety. Duodenal Switch is an option primarily reserved for patients with a BMI greater than 60. This procedure is performed by creating a thin vertical sleeve of stomach, much like the sleeve gastrectomy. The first part of the intestine (the duodenum) is then divided and connected to the lower part of the small intestine (ileum), thereby bypassing a large portion of the small intestine. Weight loss is achieved by eating smaller portions, greatly reduced absorption of fats and nutrients and alteration of the body s gut hormones.
