CONTENTS What is sleeve gastrectomy? Why choose sleeve gastrectomy? Health risks associated with excess weight Are you a candidate for sleeve gastrectomy? Before gastric sleeve surgery Undergoing gastric sleeve surgery After gastric sleeve surgery Why choose CarePoint Health for Bariatric Surgery? Sleeve gastrectomy insurance options
3 Introduction If you ve tried to lose weight through diet, exercise, and weight-loss programs without any luck, then weight-loss surgery might be the answer for you. When conventional weight-loss methods fail, weight-loss surgery can help you lose your excess weight, become healthier, and live a fuller life. CarePoint Health Center for Bariatric Surgery offers weight-loss patients the option to undergo sleeve gastrectomy, also known as gastric sleeve surgery or vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Gastric sleeve surgery will help you lose weight by reducing the size of your stomach and limiting your food intake, leading to an overall healthier body. CarePoint Health will work with you on getting the most out of your gastric sleeve surgery, and will guide you through the necessary changes required to make your lifestyle healthier. For weight-loss patients, surgery is the first step you can take toward becoming happier, more confident, healthier, and more active. Before you decide to undergo gastric sleeve surgery, it s important to understand how the surgery works, learn about the risks involved, and discover how you can ensure that the gastric sleeve results in lasting success. The benefits of gastric sleeve surgery far outweigh the potential risks and health problems you could face if you continue to gain weight or retain an unhealthy body weight. At CarePoint Health, we ll work closely with you as you prepare yourself mentally and physically for gastric sleeve surgery, and will provide you with the support you need so you can experience a healthy and happy journey to weight loss.
4 What is sleeve gastrectomy? During sleeve gastrectomy, a bariatric surgeon removes approximately 85 percent of your stomach to leave behind a pouch that resembles a sleeve that is roughly the size of a banana. The sleeve will limit the amount of food you can eat in one sitting, and holds between 50 and 150 ml of food. When you eat after undergoing gastric sleeve surgery, you ll feel full sooner, and for longer periods of time as a result of having a smaller stomach pouch. Originally, gastric sleeve surgery was the first phase of a two-part weight-loss treatment in which the second phase was gastric bypass surgery. However, surgeons have found that gastric sleeve surgery by itself can be just as effective in helping patients achieve lasting weight loss. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, gastric sleeve surgery does not involve any rerouting of the intestines. When you eat, your body will still have the ability to absorb important minerals and vital nutrients, and will continue to pass and digest food in a normal manner. Gastric sleeve surgery is an irreversible process, and will not require you to continue to make trips to the clinic for post-operative adjustments.
Why choose sleeve gastrectomy? Weight-loss surgery is a genuine life-saving option for those who are overweight and have problems with trying to lose weight. Not only can weight-loss surgery help you feel more comfortable, happier, and confident, but it can also help reverse and correct certain weight-related health problems, also known as comorbidities. 5
Gastric sleeve surgery can help resolve comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, severe arthritis, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, aching joints, and more. Research has shown that 95 percent of all weight-loss surgery patients report improved quality of life after undergoing surgery, compared to overweight people who choose not to undergo weight-loss surgery at all. A sleeve gastrectomy has several additional benefits over other types of weight-loss surgeries. Gastric sleeve surgery does not require the rerouting of intestines as does gastric bypass surgery, so your body will still be able to absorb vital nutrients and perform digestion in a normal fashion. Also, gastric sleeve surgery does not require the insertion of an artificial device inside the body such as the LAP-BAND, which would require patients to undergo monthly adjustments. A study published in the May 2013 issue of Annals of Surgery found that sleeve gastrectomy resulted in an overall better safety profile for weight-loss patients than gastric bypass surgery. When compared to gastric banding procedures such as the LAP-BAND surgery, sleeve gastrectomy showed better weight-loss results, remission of comorbidities, and better quality of life outcomes for all patients. 6 As a whole, gastric sleeve surgery is associated with minimal risks and is a widely accepted form of weight-loss surgery, especially considering its link to the reversal of type 2 diabetes and other comorbidities.
7 Health risks associated with excess weight Just as with all other types of surgeries, gastric sleeve surgery does not come without its own risks. Despite the possible risks of weight-loss surgery, the benefits far outweigh the health problems you could face by staying overweight and dealing with highly serious and long-term complications.
8 Your body is considered obese when your body mass index (BMI) reaches 30. Body mass index is measured by comparing height against weight, and should be no more than 25 for any person. When your BMI reaches 30, you can start experiencing health complications and illnesses that may eventually lead to more serious health problems. A BMI over 30 can increase your risk for developing the following illnesses: Type 2 diabetes High blood pressure (hypertension) Obstructive sleep apnea Heart disease High cholesterol Asthma Infertility Osteoarthritis Joint problems Gallbladder problems Acid reflux Cancer Gastric sleeve surgery can help you lose weight and reverse most, if not all, other weight-related comorbidities. With help from CarePoint Health, patients are usually able to stop taking medications for type 2 diabetes and other health problems, and have reported that they feel happier, healthier, and more energetic as a result of undergoing weight-loss surgery.
9 Are you a candidate for sleeve gastrectomy? To qualify for gastric sleeve surgery, you must be at least 18 years old, have a BMI of at least 40, and have previously attempted to lose weight through conventional methods of dieting and exercise. You must also be ready to commit to permanent lifestyle changes following surgery, such as eating healthier and staying active, and must fully understand the risks associated with weight-loss surgery in general. Age: Over 18 years of age BMI: >40 Have previously attempted to lose weight through conventional methods of dieting and exercise
You may also qualify for gastric sleeve surgery if your BMI is at least 35 and you suffer from one or more comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, etc. At CarePoint Health, we will work with you as an individual and take a combination of factors into consideration to determine whether you re an ideal candidate for sleeve gastrectomy. If you are interested in gastric sleeve surgery but are unsure whether you meet the standard requirements for surgery, meet with us so we can discuss your eligibility. In some cases, we may consider you a candidate for gastric sleeve surgery based on your physician s recommendation or on your medical history. Before gastric sleeve surgery Before you make the decision to undergo gastric sleeve surgery, CarePoint Health Center for Bariatric Surgery will consult with you to make sure you fully understand the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy and how it can improve your health and lifestyle. At CarePoint Health, our staff is dedicated to making sure you have the support you need throughout your journey to weight loss. Prior to surgery, we may require you to undergo a series of medical tests for your own safety to identify whether you have any existing health complications that could prevent your procedure from being fully successful. At CarePoint Health, we care for your health and overall well-being, and want you to experience a safe weight-loss surgery. 10 We will also work with you to make sure you understand and know how to implement the necessary series of healthy lifestyle changes following surgery. Our staff at CarePoint Health Center for Bariatric Surgery understands that weight-loss surgery can be an emotional experience, especially if you ve attempted and failed at numerous weight-loss methods in the past. That s why our team at CarePoint Health has the goal of making you feel comfortable and confident while preparing you for surgery.
Undergoing gastric sleeve surgery At the time you undergo gastric sleeve surgery, you ll be placed under general anesthesia for the length of the procedure. Traditionally, sleeve gastrectomy is performed as an open surgery procedure. However, the surgeons at CarePoint Health will perform a laparoscopic surgery, which involves making a series of tiny incisions across the abdominal region versus one long incision. Your bariatric surgeon will insert a tiny camera into one of the incisions to gain complete visibility of your abdomen, and will conduct the surgery by inserting tiny surgical instruments into the other incisions. Using a series of surgical tools, your surgeon will cut away a large portion of your stomach, and leave behind a thin, vertical stomach pouch that resembles a sleeve. Your stomach will be enclosed using a series of surgical staples, and your incisions will be carefully sutured to result in minimal pain and scarring. Gastric sleeve surgery generally takes up to 60 minutes to complete, and results in very little recovery time due to the minimally invasive nature of laparoscopic surgery. Shortly after surgery, you ll be allowed to go home and recover in the comfortable privacy of your own home. 60 min 11
After gastric sleeve surgery Following your gastric sleeve surgery, CarePoint Health will continue to provide you with lasting support as you work on adjusting to your new, healthy, and thinner lifestyle. In the weeks and months that follow surgery, your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions regarding what you can safely eat. For the first several days after surgery, you ll be restricted to liquids before you eventually make the transition to softer, and then solid foods. Since meal planning and nutrition following sleeve gastrectomy are vital to the ongoing success of your weight-loss journey, CarePoint Health will schedule follow-up visits with you so we can guide you through these new lifestyle changes. The gastric sleeve will limit your food intake and portions for the rest of your life, so we ll need to work with you on making sure your diet is high in certain vital nutrients and minerals. CarePoint Health Center for Bariatric Surgery offers a comprehensive aftercare program for all of our weight-loss patients. Our program will help you meet your individual weight-loss goals through ongoing support tools such as nutritional counseling and free monthly support groups. The care that CarePoint Health provides to all weight-loss surgery patients is ongoing for the months and years that follow surgery. During each of your follow-up visits, CarePoint Health will track your weight-loss progress, discuss your goals, and address any concerns you may have about your new life post-surgery. Our goal at CarePoint Health is to help you succeed with your weight-loss plans and to help you understand how sleeve gastrectomy can help you meet your long-term weight loss goals. 12
