The Campaign Pack This communications campaign pack has been developed to help you make some noise in your areas around World Mental Health Day and encourage you to share the small things that make a big difference. campaign pack This pack details contains information, resources and tips to support this campaign. In order to make the pledge signing meaningful, we ask you to develop a pledge action. This will detail the actions you are committed to introducing one or more of the take 5 messages and turning them in to meaningful actions or goals.

Introduction Many of us have a passion to support mental health as individuals, in our homes, schools, workplaces and our communities. One in four of us will experience a mental health problem and 9 in 10 say they have faced negative treatment from others as a result. By choosing to be open about mental health, we are all part of a movement that s breaking down mental health stigma and discrimination. The October campaign is the perfect opportunity to do that. We want to get as many people involved in our campaign. Make a pledge to do something no matter how small to promote the 5 ways to wellbeing Everyone can do something The 5 ways to wellbeing have been identified through extensive reviews of research and expert opinion as simple actions that anyone can take that will have a positive impact on their day to day wellbeing. There is nothing new or surprising in these messages other than knowing that there is substantial evidence to support their value in living well and that small changes can make a big difference. 1 Take Notice 2 Connect... 3 Get Active... 4 Keep Learning... 5 Give 1 Hit the pause button for a moment, breath and take notice of the things around you and take stock of what is important to you 2 Asking someone are you ok and taking the time to listen? 3 Get active - remember a thousand miles begins with the first step 4 Learn - come on mental health first aid training or begin to refocus on your hopes and dreams and look at ways to learn to achieve them. 5 Reach out and lend a helping hand in your family, among friends, in your school, community or workplace. Make up a buddy bag containing a small gift to help someone smile.

Activity Ideas to get Involved in the Campaign There are lots of ways in which you could bring the concept of Take 5 into your life, whether that s simply by sharing the messages below or taking it a step further and running activities in your area. Some tips about how to build a strong article for your newsletter or intranet about the campaign: 1. Personal story Try to open with a quote or a paragraph from an individual who has experienced a mental health problem and how one or more of the take 5 helped them on their journey of recovery 2. Getting the messages noticed Include a quote or paragraph from someone senior or a community champion about why they re supporting the take 5 and why it is important in promoting health and wellbeing. 3. Information about the campaign Include a short description of what the campaign is, and how people can find out more and get involved themselves. 4. Signpost to relevant support Let people know what is available to them and how to access it. Have taster session to get people interested.

Running an Information Session and Getting People Involved Format 1-2 hour session Group opportunities, Groups of people, Inter-generational groups, vulnerable group - disability, LGBT, Ethnic Minority groups - hard to reach group Fun exercise to promote the five ways Brief introduction to mental health If possible a community champion or someone the group can relate to Invite people to join in developing a visioning in board Pick one of the take five and introduce an activity to get people participating. 12 Evaluating Your Event It is important to learn from the things we do to promote mental health and to see how well the campaign has gone. This can simply be; Recording the number of people who attended. Recording number of pledges that have been made. Getting feedback on how people found the events. Recording the event in a letter. Or using a simple evaluation questionnaire. See appendix 3 Use a mood recording before and after activities. See appendix (4) campaign pack

Signposting to Support It s great to start the conversations about mental health, however sometimes this can mean that people currently experiencing mental health problems will need some support as sensitive conversations may bring up difficult things. We would encourage you to highlight the support that is currently available but you may also like to link to sources of support. Having someone available who is trained in mental health first aid, safe talk or ASIST would be advisable.
