3 Adoption Support
4 Adoption Support at Coram Coram recognises that whilst adopting can be very rewarding for parents, it comes with challenges. We offer tried-and-tested adoption support which is tailored to the needs of each parent. All parents who adopt through Coram have the opportunity to benefit from support services, which include our Parenting Programmes. We support our families throughout the process, and afterwards - for as long as they need us. We returned to Coram for parenting support for our daughter, who had experienced a lot of disruption in her early years and took longer to settle. Their groups help you understand what your child might be feeling and how to help them build up trust in you. Adoptive parent
5 Parenting Programmes Webster Stratton Incredible Years Parenting Programme and STOP (Supportive Programme for Parents of Teenagers), both adapted for the needs of adoptive parents, are available to parents who adopt through Coram. The Incredible Years Programme is geared towards the parents of children aged from three to nine, and the STOP programme is for the parents of children aged 12 to 14 years old. Incredible Years for adoptive parents is accredited by C4EO, the Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People s Services. What people say about our Parenting Programmes Feedback from adopters who attended our Incredible Years adoption parenting programme showed that all parents reported an improvement in their child s attachment. Parents particularly valued the chance to share experiences, ideas and tips with other adoptive parents, and everyone who responded would recommend the programme to other parents. Coram helped us become a family and continue to support us to be a happy family. The staff are motivated and caring, and the impact Coram has had on our lives has been amazing thank you! 6 Additional Adoption Support Services As well as parenting programmes, we offer a range of support services to Coram adopters. Some of these can also be commissioned by Local Authorities for those who have not adopted though Coram. Telephone Advice Advice and guidance is available from Coram s social workers during office hours. Stay and Play Groups These groups enable new parents and their children to meet other new adopters and speak to our Adoption Support Team. Creative Therapy Creative therapy provides a safe place where children can explore how to communicate and express their feelings using art, music and play. Referrals to specialist services Coram is able to support adoptive parents with referral for a variety of services including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), where appropriate. Life Story Work Life story work helps adopted children to remember and make sense of their early lives. Advice and support with schooling issues Coram s adoption support team will be able to help with a child s Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP).
