Kursinhalte Thema & Beschreibung der Kursinhalte: This two and-a-half day course introduces students in a highly concentrated way to the study of comparative politics and government. By examining how politics are organised in modern democracies particularly in Europe students will be able to understand how societies make collective decisions. After a brief introduction to the study of comparative politics and democracy, the course will explore the themes of political mobilisation and participation (elections, voters, political parties and interest groups), governance (executives, legislatures and multi-level government), policy-making and public policy. (V.) Literatur Required Readings: Pflichtliteratur: All the required readings in the list below come from the following textbook - the classic introduction to comparative politics. The 8 th edition has a broader range than previous ones. However, this course will be restricted to democracies (hence, excluding authoritarian regimes). 4 Secondary Readings: However, the volumes below will provide additional information for secondary readings and/or essay preparation, some have companion websites. The volumes edited by Hay and Menon (Part 1) and by Joseph Colomer cover in separate chapters the politics and governments of individual countries or groups of countries (Germany, France, Italy, Britain, Scandinavia, Belgium and the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal, Greece/Turkey and Cyprus, and Central and Eastern Europe, the EU).
