March 3-7 Weekly Learning Center Ideas Umbrella Balloon Hat Kite Shirt Handkerchief Wig Envelopes Flag (or square piece of material) Scarves Newspapers Toy sailboats Camera Construction paper Glue Markers Staples, book ring, etc. Pencil Styrofoam cup/plate Basketball Balloon Box fan (if it is not windy) Chart paper Markers Science Project Dramatic Play The Wind Blew - Add the following items to the Dramatic Play area: a childsized umbrella, a balloon, a hat, a kite, a shirt, handkerchief, a wig, letters (envelopes), flag (rectangle piece of material), 2 scarves, and newspapers. Show the children the items and point out that they are the same as the items in the story. Allow the children to use the props to act out parts of the story. *You could also use a box fan for wind. **Discuss safety rules when showing the children the items (umbrella, balloon, etc). Science and Discovery/Sand and Water Play Sailboats - Add toy sailboats to the water table. Show the children how to blow air into the sails to make the boats move. Blocks Blocks Book - Explain to the children that you would like them to create the most interesting structure they have ever built. Then take a picture of each child with her structure. Glue each child s picture on a piece of construction. Have the children tell you about their structures and record their stories/descriptions underneath their pictures. Bind the pages into a book and keep it in the block center for inspiration. Manipulatives Paper Clip Chains - Set out a container of multicolored paper clips. Challenge the children to form a pattern by linking them together in a chain. Which Objects Will the Wind Move? - Have the children select classroom items to investigate. Add some items to their selections, as well. Ideas for items to use: pencil, Styrofoam cup or plate, basketball, balloon, etc. If the wind is blowing, take the objects outside. If not, set up a box fan in your classroom. Allow the children to set the objects down in the wind or in front of the fan. Have them observe whether or not the wind moves the objects. Record the results on a t-chart. After you are finished experimenting, discuss the results. Ask the children how the wind was able to move some objects (they are light). Then ask them why the wind could not move the other items (they are heavy). Reinforce this idea by asking the children why they think the wind could move some objects, but not others. The children should conclude that the wind moves lighter objects, but not heavier ones.

March 3-7 Cooking Activity Ingredients Sugar cookie dough Knife Diamond shaped cookie cutter Sprinkles or icing Red string licorice Kite Cookies - Roll out some sugar cookie dough. Cut out diamond shapes, using a knife or cookie cutter. Use a knife to make imprints in the kite (to look like the frame). *Allow the children to decorate the kite cookies with sprinkles. Bake the cookies as directed. For a tail, use a piece of red string licorice. *You could also have the children decorate the cookies with icing after they are finished baking. Songs and Poems Wind Tricks The wind is full of tricks today (make sweeping motion with one hand). It blew my Daddy s hat away (pretend to sweep hat off head0. It chased our paper down the street (one hand chases other around). It almost blew us off our feet (jump up and down)! It makes the trees and bushes dance (raise arms and dance). Just listen to it howl and prance (cup hand to ear)! Traditional Other Suggested Readings Can You See the Wind? (non-fiction) by Alan Fowler Curious George Flies a Kite by H.A. Rey Gilberto and the Wind by Marie Hall Ets

March 3-7 Shared Reading Day 1 1. Prior Knowledge Ask the children if they have ever seen the wind. Encourage the children to share their ideas. Title the chart The Wind Can Blow. Then give each child a copy of the The Wind Blew activity sheet. Have the children draw a picture of something being blown by the wind. As each child completes his picture, ask him to tell you about it. Then fill in the blank accordingly. Bind all of the children s work together (along with the front and back covers). Show the book to the children and explain that they are the authors of the book. Read it to them and then place it in your classroom library. Creative Arts (Fine motor) 1. Wind Sock - Give each child a large sheet of construction paper (or a piece of poster board) and markers/crayons. Allow them to decorate the paper/board. Then roll up the paper (with the decoration on the outside) and staple the ends together. Use a hole puncher to make a hole on each side of the top. Lace a piece of string through the holes. 8 Tuesday, March 4 chart paper Markers Double sided tape Scissors Ziploc baggies Items to print A clip art Morning Meeting 1. Our A Chart - Before beginning this activity: Print, color and cut out the A clipart. Then label a piece of chart paper with Our A Chart. Explain to the children that you are going to describe something that starts with A and that they have to try and guess what you are describing. Begin playing this game. When the object is guessed correctly, tape (double sided tape) the picture to the chart and then label it. Do this for each clip art picture. Then challenge the children to think of things that start with A that are not already on the chart. As they think of things add them to the chart by drawing a little picture and labeling it. Review the chart throughout the week. You can also have the children take turns circling the A at the beginning of each word. Not only is this activity good for letter recognition, but it is also good for vocabulary development. 2. Capturing Air - Give each child a baggie and challenge them to catch some air in it. Once they have tried, show them how to hold the bag, blow into it and seal it. Explain that the bag is now full of air; so, they have caught air. Then snip the corner of each child s bag and hold it up his cheek. Squeeze the air out of the bag so that the child can feel the air coming out. Story Time 1. Follow the Day 2 Shared Reading Schedule.

Tuesday, March 4 Crayons Scissors Glue Sentence strips Items to print Sequencing activity sheet Small Group Math What did the wind blow? *Challenge the children to recall the sequence of the items that the wind blew. As the children name the items record their answers. Then use the books as a reference and check to see if they remembered everything in the correct order. If not, make a new list of the items in order. Draw a picture of each item beside the word. For example: Beside the word newspaper draw a little picture of a newspaper. Next, give each child a sequencing activity sheet, some crayons, and some scissors. Have the children color the items and cut them out. Then give the children some glue and sentence strips. Instruct the children to glue the items on the sentence strip in the correct order. *Encourage the children to use the terms first, second, third when sequencing. Creative Arts (Fine motor) Cardstock or construction paper markers stapler Items to print The Wind Blows Booklet - pages 2 and 3 1. Pretty Paper Fans - Give each child a piece of cardstock or construction paper and some markers. Direct the children to decorate the piece of paper. Then model how to fold the paper back and forth (accordion-style) to make a fan. When the children are done folding pinch one of the ends of the fan and then staple it together. Open up the folds a bit. Allow the children to fan themselves and their friends. 2. The Wind Blows... Booklet - Give the children pages 2 and 3 of the booklet. Read over the pages with them. Have the children trace the words cat and mat. Discuss the fact that these two words rhyme. Point out that the endings of both words are the same ( at ). Explain that because both words end in at the words are part of the -AT family. Allow the children to color the pictures.

Wednesday, March 5 Chart paper Markers Post-it notes Morning Meeting 1. Kites or Sailboats - Before beginning this activity: Make a t-chart on a piece of chart paper with Kite on one side and Sailboat on the other. Give each child a post-it note with their name on it. Ask the children if they would rather fly a kite or sail a toy sailboat. Then allow them to take turns placing their names in the correct column. After each child has placed his answer, count the number of Kite responses and then count the number of Sailboat responses. Ask the children to name which side had more responses. Discuss the results in terms of more and less. 2. Sentence Starters - On a large piece of chart paper write the following sentence starter: *If I was the wind I would... Read the sentence starter and encourage each child to respond with a unique answer. Record their answers. Story Time 1. Follow the Day 3 Shared Reading Schedule.

Wednesday, March 5 Crayons Items to print A Words activity sheet Construction paper Markers Scissors Glue Paper fasteners (brads) Straws Pencil Items to print Pinwheel pattern Booklet pages 4 and 5 Small Group Language Arts A Words - Ask the children to recall some of the items on the A Chart (from yesterday s activity). Give each child an A Words activity sheet and some crayons. Have the children draw pictures of some of the A words they remember. Label the children s pictures. Creative Arts (Fine motor) 1. Make a Pinwheel - Before beginning this activity: Print the pinwheel pattern for each child. Cut around the square on the solid lines. Then glue the pattern onto a piece of construction paper. Cut around the square again. Allow them to dry. Give each child a pinwheel pattern and some washable markers. Encourage the children to use their creativity to decorate both sides of the pinwheel. Then give each child a pair of scissors and direct them to cut along the dotted lines to the center. Explain that they should not cut the circle in the middle. Use a sharpened pencil to poke holes in the four small circles of each child s pattern. Next, poke a hole through a straw (near the top). Fold the four points of the square towards the middle so that the small holes meet and line up. Push a paper fastener through all of the holes. Then put the straw on the paper fastener. Flatten out the ends of the paper fastener in opposite directions. Finally, you have a pinwheel! Give each child their own decorated pinwheel and take them outside to try them out. 2. The Wind Blows Booklet - Give the children pages 4 and 5 of the booklet. Read over the pages with them, and have them trace the words rat and bat. Challenge the children to recall to which family the words belong (-at family). Reinforce that the two words rhyme and that they both end in at. Practice segmenting and blending the words. To do this you sound out each letter ( /r/ - /a/ - /t/ ) and then slowly blend the sounds together to make the word ( rat ). Allow the children to color the pictures.

Thursday, March 6 Bubbles (see recipe) Bubble wands Wind chimes Morning Meeting 1. Blowing Bubbles - Explain that it takes air to blow bubbles and that the wind can blow the bubbles around. Go outside and let the children experiment with different shapes and sizes of bubble wands. For super duper bubbles, here is a great bubble recipe. National Wildlife Federation Bubble Recipe from NWF Backyard Buddies 1/4 cup liquid dishwashing detergent 3/4 cup cold water 5 drops of glycerin (available in pharmacies) 2. Wind Chimes - Bring in several sets of wind chimes and hang them up. Explain that when the chimes are hung up outside the wind blows them and they make music. Tell the children that since you are inside, and there is no wind, you are going to gently move them so that they can hear the sounds they make. Next, demonstrate the sound of each set of chimes. Remind the children to listen closely and carefully. Then have the children close their eyes. Gently shake one set of the chimes and then stop it from moving. Direct the children to open their eyes. Challenge them to try to identify which chime was rung. Repeat using a different set of chimes. Take the chimes outside when you go out to play. *The Dollar Tree and Dollar General stores usually have wind chimes. Story Time 1. Follow the Day 4 Shared Reading Schedule.

Thursday, March 6 Cotton balls Straws Masking tape Pen Yarn scissors Small Group Math Cotton Ball Race - For this activity you will need to work at a long table. Give each child a straw and a cotton ball. One at a time, have each child point his straw at the cotton ball and blow through the straw to move the cotton ball. Give the children some time to practice. Then give each child a turn. Mark the spot where each child s cotton ball stops with a small piece of tape labeled with the child s name. Then help each child measure the distance his cotton ball traveled with a piece of yarn. Cut the yarn the length that equals the distance the cotton ball traveled. Do this with each child. Once each child has his length of yarn, have them compare their pieces to determine whose cotton ball traveled the farthest, shortest, etc. Straws Construction paper (large) Paint crayons Items to print Booklet pages 6-7 Creative Arts (Fine motor) 1. Wind Art - Before beginning this activity: Choose several colors of paint and add a little water to each. You will need a thin consistency. Give each child a large piece of construction paper and a straw. Have the children practice blowing through the straw gently. Then have the children choose which colors of paint they would like to use. Put several large drops of the paint color they choose on to their pieces of construction paper. Next, direct the children to aim their straws at the paint and blow gently. When the children blow the paint around the paper it will make a colorful design. 2. The Wind Blows Booklet - Give the children page 6 of the booklet. Read over the page with them. Challenge the children to recall to which family the word belongs (-at family). Have the children trace the word gnat. Reread the entire booklet. When you come to each at word, pause and allow the children to say the word. After reading, review all of the at words. Ask the children if they can think of any other words that rhyme with these. Practice segmenting and blending all of the at words.

Friday, March 7 The Wind Blows Booklets Bulletin board paper or poster board Green collage items Glue Streamers scissors Morning Meeting 1. White construction paper Hole puncher Yarn Streamers Watercolors scissors Creative Arts (Fine motor) My Very Own Kite - Before beginning this activity: Cut a diamond shape out of construction paper for each child. Give each child a diamond cut out of thick white construction paper and a set of watercolors. Allow the children to paint the diamond shape. Set the diamonds to dry. Once dry, punch a hole in the bottom of the diamond, string a piece of yarn through the hole, and knot the yarn. This will make the diamond into a simple kite. Then give each child his kite, some different colored streamers, and some glue. Direct the children to glue the streamers onto the bottom of the kite (near the yarn). Allow the glue to dry.
