1 Lesson plan 2 Topic: Monkey Puzzle a story. Time: 45 minutes AIMS OF THE LESSON Revision and presentation of vocabulary connected with animals Practice of the pronunciation of the words Listening practice Speaking practice MATERIALS & TEACHING AIDS Monkey Puzzle the text of the story; source: Monkey Puzzle (Appendix 2a) Pictures; source: Monkey Puzzle (Appendix 2b) Handout with vocabulary from the story and transcription (Appendix 2c) Handout with a crossword (Appendix 2d) Handout with a diagram (Appendix 2e) LESSON STAGES 1. Introductory stage (Time: 9 minutes) Greeting, checking the attendance and presentation of the topic Warm-up: the teacher writes ANIMAL on the board, the students come and write the names of animals they remember. 2. Presentation The teacher tells the story (see Appendix 2a) and shows the pictures (see Appendix 2b), while listening, the students put down the names of animals that they hear. Then they check how many of them they succeeded to write. Time: 8 minutes The students get handouts with vocabulary describing a particular animal from the story with simplified transcription (the students are not familiar with phonetic symbols and this is why the transcription is written by means of regular letters; see Appendix 2c). They repeat the words after the teacher. Time: 3 minutes 3. Practice The teacher tells the story and shows the pictures again. While listening the students match the words from the handout with the names of animals as they can hear. Then the learners check the answers. Time: 8 minutes

2 The students try to translate the vocabulary from the handout into Polish and write the translation of the words. The teacher helps if necessary. Time: 5 minutes The teacher asks some questions to check how well the students have understood the story, e.g. Who did a monkey want to find? Who helped the monkey to find its mother? Why did a butterfly have problems with finding the monkey s mother? Did they finally find the monkey s mother? The students can answer in their mother tongue if necessary. They volunteer to answer. Time: 5 minutes The students complete the crossword containing nouns connected with the story (see Appendix 2d). They work separately. Then they check the answers. Time: 6 minutes Presentation of homework and saying goodbye Time: 1 minute ADDITIONAL EXERCISE The learners create three sentences using words chosen from the story. They work in pairs. The teacher asks a few learners to read their sentences. Time: 5 minutes HOWEWORK The students look for adjectives and verbs from the story in the diagram (see Appendix 2e).

She s big! said the monkey. Bigger than me. Bigger than you? Then I ve seen your mum. Come, little monkey, come, come, come. No, no, no! That s an elephant. My mum isn t a great grey hunk. She hasn t got tusks or a curly trunk. She doesn t have great thick baggy knees. And anyway, her tail coils round trees. She coils round trees? Then she s very near. Quick, little monkey! She s over here. No, no, no! That s a snake. Mum doesn t look a bit like this. She doesn t slither about and hiss. She doesn t curl round a nest of eggs. And anyway, my mum s got more legs. It s legs we re looking for now, you say? I know where she is, then. Come this way. No, no, no! That s a spider. Mum isn t black and hairy and fat. She s not got so many legs as that! She d rather eat fruit than swallow a fly, And she lives in the treetops, way up high. She lives in the trees? You should have said! Your mummy s hiding above your head. No, no, no! That s a parrot. Mum s got a nose and not a beak. She doesn t squawk and squabble and shriek. She doesn t have claws or feathery wings. And anyway, my mum leaps and springs. Aha! I ve got it! She leaps about? She s just round the corner, without a doubt.

4 No, no, no! That s a frog! Butterfly, butterfly, please don t joke! Mum s not green and she doesn t croak. She s not all slimy. Oh dear, what a muddle! She s brown and furry, and nice to cuddle. Brown fur why didn t you tell me so? We ll find her in no time off we go! No, no, no! That s a bat. Why do you keep on getting it wrong? Mum doesn t sleep the whole day long. I told you, she s got no wings at all, And anyway, she s not nearly so small! Your mum s not little? Now let me think. She s down by the river, having a drink! NO, NO, NO! That s an elephant again! Butterfly, butterfly, can t you see? None of these creatures looks like me! You never told me she looked like you! Of course I didn t! I thought you knew! I didn t know. I couldn t! You see None of my babies look like me. So she looks like you! Well, if that s the case We ll soon discover her hiding place. No, no, no! That s my dad! Come, little monkey, come, come, come. It s time I took you home to Mum!

Introductory stage (Time: 6 minutes) Greeting and presentation of the topic Warm-up: the teacher shows the first picture from the sets presenting the events from the story (see Appendix 2b) and asks the learners why the monkey is sad. They suggest possible answers. 2. Presentation The students get handouts with the plan of the story in an inappropriate order (see Appendix 3a). The teacher checks if the pupils understand the sentences and if necessary, she helps to translate them into Polish. The teacher tells the story (see Appendix 2a) and presents the pictures (see Appendix 2b). While listening, students put the sentences in the right order to create the plan of the story. The students check the answers with the teacher. She asks if their guesses about the reason why the monkey is sad have been right. Time: 12 minutes 3. Practice The students get sets of small pictures (see Appendix 3b) which represent sentences from the previous activity. The pupils are supposed to match the sentences from Appendix 3a with the pictures. They check, together with the teacher, if they have managed to do it correctly. Time: 6 minutes The students re-write the story on the basis of the plan that they have prepared before. They build up each sentence by means of Past Simple tense. The teacher helps to create the first sentence written in accordance with the first point of the plan. Later, the students work individually. The teacher asks one student to read his or her version of the story and corrects the errors.

15 Time: 16 minutes The teacher asks the students if they are sometimes sad and what the reasons for that are. They say what they do when they feel downhearted in English. They use their mother tongue only if necessary. Time: 4 minutes Presentation of homework and saying goodbye Time: 1 minute ADDITIONAL EXERCISE The students write two endings for the sentence: The monkey got lost because. They work separately. Time: 4 minutes HOWEWORK The students learn their version of the story by heart and present it to the teacher.
