BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES LEADER GUIDE The First Sin (Genesis 3:1-24) Lower Elementary Workshop Focus: Even when we are tempted to sin, God forgives! Keep these tips in mind as you welcome kids to the workshop and explore the story together. Each week, remember to welcome kids to the rotation. Keep in mind that for some kids it may be the first time they are visiting your workshop! If kids have heard the story several times during previous weeks, read it again! Kids learn through repetition, and every workshop will explore the Bible story in a slightly different way. Remember that the Shepherds are there to support you as they accompany kids each week. Be sure to visit sparksundayschool.org to download the Family Page for this story. Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. bible SKILLS & games Open the Bible (10 minutes) The First Sin Storytelling Invite the kids into your space. Welcome to Bible Skills and Games, kids! Today we re going to play some games as we learn about the story of the first sin. What does the word sin mean? Allow kids to respond, accepting all answers. Sin is something you do that you know is wrong, like breaking a rule at home or at school. Even though sinning is something we try not to do, all of us sin sometime. Spark Story Bibles None Have you ever broken a rule that your mom or dad made? What happened? Allow time for kids to respond. God is like a parent. God has rules for us to follow. The rules God has for us help keep us happy and safe. Many of the rules that God has are in the Bible. Can you think of a rule that God would want us to obey? (being kind to one another, sharing, not stealing, etc.) Adam and Eve, the first people God created, lived in a beautiful garden. God gave them everything they needed and had only one rule: They could eat fruit from any tree in the whole garden except one important tree in the middle. Let s The First Sin 33

hear our story now, but first, let s vote: How many of you think that Adam and Eve will break God s rule? Take a quick vote of your group to see who thinks Adam and Eve will break the rule. Distribute copies of the Spark Story Bible, one per kid. Invite kids to open their Bibles to the story of The First Sin, on pages Every time you hear me say serpent, I want you to hiss like a serpent, which is another word for snake. Let s practice. Say serpent, and encourage kids to make hissing snake sounds. Read the story with a strong, animated voice. Following the story, take time to discuss, allowing kids time to respond to each question. Adam and Eve did break God s rule. Why did they eat the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden? (The serpent tricked/told them. The fruit looked good. They wanted to know everything and be like God.) The serpent helped, but Adam and Eve were the ones who broke God s rule. Sometimes it s hard to avoid sin, but even when we do sin, God always forgives us! Activate Faith (25 minutes) Sneaky Serpent Tag Invite everyone to gather in an open area on the floor. Now that we ve heard the story of the first sin, we re ready to play some Bible games. Take some time to discuss temptation. In our story today, Adam and Eve gave into something called temptation. Do you know what temptation is? Allow time for kids to respond. Temptation is the feeling we get when we want to do something we know is wrong. Adam and Eve knew that they weren t supposed to eat the fruit but they were tempted, and they did it anyway. None None Temptation to sin can be hard to get away from. It can be hard not to listen to people who are tempting us. Who tempted Adam and Eve in our Bible story? (the serpent) Who can be tempters in our own lives? (friends, siblings, ourselves, etc.) The more temptation we have, the harder it can be to avoid. Let s play a game called Sneaky Serpent Tag, where staying away from temptation gets harder with more people doing the tempting. Get ready to play 1. Choose one person to be It the head of the serpent. Explain to the kids that in the game, the head of the serpent must run around and tag other members of the group. 2. Have the kids in your group stand up and spread out throughout your space. Further explain the game. 3. When you get tagged, join onto the slippery serpent by holding on to the shoulders of the person in front of you in the 34 Workshop Leader Guides

serpent line. All serpent members can tag someone, but you must keep one hand on the shoulder of the person in front of you at all times to keep the serpent together. Play the game When your group is spread out throughout the space and understands how to play the game, you can begin play. Invite the head of the serpent to run around the room, tagging other group members. When a person is tagged, instruct him or her to join the serpent, as described above. Play the game until all of the kids are tagged. The last person to be tagged gets to be the new head of the serpent in the next round. Play as long as time allows. Following the game, take time to discuss, allowing kids to respond to each one. Was it easier to tag people alone or as a big serpent? Was it harder to avoid the serpent the larger it got? Sometimes temptation is hard to avoid, like the sneaky serpent in our tag game. But even when temptation is too much, and we sin, God always forgives! Adam and Eve broke God s rule. They sinned. But even though they sinned, God forgave! Speech Bubble Relay Set Up: 1. Write the following quotes in speech bubbles on index cards, one per card. Do NOT include the character who said it. That is for your own reference, to check kids accuracy later in the activity. You will need one set of quotes for each team of four to six kids in your class. Did God really say you can t eat the fruit from the trees in the Garden of Eden? Serpent God said we can eat fruit from any of the trees in the garden except for the tree in the middle of the garden. God said not to eat from that one not to even touch it. Eve Ha! God doesn t want you to eat fruit from that tree because, if you do, you ll know everything you ll be just like God! The Serpent Yoo-hoo! Where are you? God I heard you... and I was afraid. Adam Why were you afraid? God Well, I m naked, for one thing, Adam Who told you that you were naked? God Did you eat fruit from the tree I told you not to eat from? God Eve gave it to me! Adam The serpent made me! He tricked me! Eve I told you not to eat from that tree. God You will have to leave this beautiful garden and work very hard to get the things you need. God None Masking tape Paper Marker Index cards, 13 per team of 4 to 6 kids bible SKILLS & games The First Sin 35

Put a loop of masking tape on the back of each index card speech bubble. For each team of four to six kids, use a marker to create paper signs with the following character names on them, writing only one character name per page: God, the serpent, Adam, Eve. Hang a set of signs for each team on a far wall in your room. Space the signs for each team a distance apart so that each set is distinct. Now, let s play a relay game to help us learn our story better. God, the serpent, Adam, and Eve all say things in our story, so let s learn what each of them says. Get ready to play 1. Divide your group into two teams of four to six kids. (You can use three teams if the numbers work out better.) As you divide the group, make sure to keep a balance of ages so that your groups are evenly matched. 2. Explain the game. Each team has a set of cartoon speech bubbles, with loops of masking tape of the back. When you get to the front of the line, your Shepherd and I will read what the speech bubble says. It s then your job to run to the other end of the room and place the speech bubble on the sign that has the character s name who said it Line the kids up in teams, on the side of the room opposite the signs. Make sure that the kids know which set of signs is theirs, and make sure to point out which character name sign is which (particularly for early readers). Give each kid a speech bubble. If needed, give two speech bubbles to some kids. (These kids will have two turns in the relay.) Play the game Help the first kid on each team in reading a speech bubble. Send him or her running to the opposite side of the room to (1) place the speech bubble on the sign of the character who said that line in the story, and then (2) run back to tag the next person on the team. Play the game until both teams place all of their speech bubbles with a character name. Review the answers (using the list provided under Set Up). If time allows, play the relay again, using different speech bubbles for each kid. Following the game, gather the kids back together. That was a fun game and it really helped me know our story better. As you got to know the story, was there anything you found interesting? Allow time for kids to share their thoughts. One of the most interesting things is that, even though Adam and Eve did the wrong thing and sinned by eating the fruit of the tree, God still loved and forgave them. He punished them just like our parents do when we ve done something wrong but he never stopped loving and protecting them just like our parents keep loving and protecting us. We have a pretty special God to love us like that. 36 Workshop Leader Guides

Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. Family Pages Gather the kids in a seated circle on the floor. Thank you for joining me at Bible Skills and Games today. I hope you had fun learning our story about the first sin. Adam and Eve sinned when they broke the rule that God gave them. Even though they sinned, God forgave them. It s true for us, too even when we are tempted to sin, God forgives! Prayer Time Before we leave today, let s pray together. As I pray, repeat each line after me. Dear God, Be with us this week. Help us to avoid sin, But thank you for forgiving us When we give in to temptation. In your name we pray, Amen. None bible SKILLS & games The First Sin 37

Action Right Wrong Cheating on a test Hitting your sister/brother Going to church Doing your homework Telling a lie Cleaning your room Stealing candy from the store Spark Bibles Spark Bible Stickers White board or flip chart Markers Activity Instructions As kids arrive, welcome them to your space. Sit together on the floor or around a table. Welcome to Bible Skills and Games, kids! I m so glad that you could join me today. Today we ll be talking about a Bible story about sin. What is sin? Allow time for kids to share their ideas. The First Sin 39

Sin is the word for the bad things that we do in our lives. Most of the time, that means breaking rules that we know we should keep. The Bible story we ll hear today is about the very first sin. Do you know whom this story is about? (Adam and Eve) That s right, the first sin came into the world with the very first people on the earth. That isn t too surprising because even though we try not to, we all sin. Whether it s disobeying our parents, or breaking a rule at school, we all do things that are wrong. Before we get into the games today, let s hear our Bible story. The story comes from Genesis and is right after the story of creation. Let s look it up together Genesis 3:1-24 (pages 4-5). Invite kids to take out their Spark Bibles and open to the passage, helping as needed. Are there a few volunteers to help us read aloud? As they read, encourage kids to place one or more of their Spark Bible Stickers near the story. We will talk about this story more as we play our games, but let s look at one important thing: What did the tree that they ate from give them? (the knowledge of good and evil) In the Garden of Eden, humans didn t need this knowledge, but in a world where there is sin, we need to take time to figure out what is right and wrong in order to make the right choices. I have a chart on our whiteboard here. Let s fill it in together. Fill in the chart that you prepared before the lesson, identifying if each item is a right or wrong thing to do. Discuss as needed, emphasizing the importance to take time to think about what s right and wrong. We all sin, and we are all forgiven. But God wants us to be the best that we can be which means taking time to think about what s right and wrong. Activate Faith (25 minutes) Two Truths and a Lie Set Up: Make copies of the Two Truths and a Lie Game Sheet from page 49 of this guide (1 per kid). Activity Instructions Gather the kids around tables or a similar workspace. The examples we just went through were pretty straightforward, but sometimes it can be hard to tell if something is right or wrong. This is one of the reasons we need to think about the things we do before we do them. Right now, we re going to look at the story more closely in an individual game called Two Truths and a Lie. This is going to be a game to help you practice using your Bible and looking up the facts of the story. Spark Bibles Pencils, 1 per kid Two Truths and a Lie Game Sheet, page 49 of this guide, 1 per kid 40 Workshop Leader Guides

Get ready to play 1. Hand out copies of the game sheet, one per kid. 2. You ll see that there are six sets of statements. Each set has two truths two things that are true in the story and one lie one thing that is not true from the story. Your job is to figure out which one is the lie and circle that statement. Play the game Distribute the pencils, one per kid, and invite kids to work. Challenge the kids to complete the sheet without referring to their Spark Bibles. When they finish, they can reference their Bibles to check their accuracy. If they have time, encourage them to create their own puzzle at the end of the game sheet. The answers to the game are B, C, A, B, A, and C. Upon completion, take time to discuss. Did any of you think that was hard? Sometimes it is important to consider things carefully. There can be a big difference in just a few words. Even though it can be hard to tell what s right and wrong, you did a great job! Sort It Out! Set Up: Prior to the activity, blow up and tie the balloons. Using the permanent marker, label each balloon with the word right or wrong. Set up the two bins or garbage cans on opposite ends of your space. Activity Instructions Let s play a game called Sort It Out that gets us up and moving around. We ve practiced using our knowledge of right and wrong. When we stop and think, we almost always know if something is right or wrong. Trouble comes when we don t stop to think through our choices and make decisions too quickly. In this game, we are going to practice working together to separate the right choices from the wrong choices. I have a lot of balloons, and each one is labeled right or wrong. Our job is to separate them into the two big bins on either side of the room. None Parachute or large flat sheet Non-latex balloons (at least 25) Dark permanent marker Two deep plastic bins or garbage cans bible SKILLS & games Get ready to play 1. Gather as a group in the playing area that you set up prior to the activity In this game I will throw balloons onto the parachute and, as a group, you will have to use the parachute to bounce the balloons over to the correct bin, according to the label on each balloon. Identify which bin is where the right balloons should go, and which bin is where the wrong balloons should go. The First Sin 41

Play the game 1. Have all the kids take hold of the parachute/sheet. Spread out, so that kids are spaced evenly around the entire thing Throw one balloon onto the parachute/sheet and give kids time to work together, using the parachute/sheet to move the balloon to the bin that corresponds with the label on that balloon. Kids get one shot to get each balloon into the correct bin. Balloons that miss the bin or fall off of the parachute/sheet don t count. Once the kids have attempted to put the balloon in the correct bin, continue to add balloons, one at a time. As kids start to get the hang of it, add balloons sooner so that they have multiple balloons on the parachute at any given time. When you are out of balloons, count the number of balloons the kids got into the correct bins. Balloons on the floor don t count. As time allows, give kids the opportunity to play again and try to beat their own score. Following the game, take time to discuss. That was fun. You worked together well. It helped that these balloons were easily labeled, didn t it? In real life, our choices aren t always labeled for us and we have to decide on our own whether they are right or wrong. Luckily, we can ask our friends, parents, adults, and God for advice to help us decide right and wrong. And even when we make a mistake and do sin, we know that God loves us and will give us forgiveness when we ask. How wonderful! Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. Have everyone grab a wrong balloon and a pencil. Well, I hope you had fun today at Bible Skills and Games. The story of The First Sin is an important Bible story to learn. Adam and Eve made the wrong choice by eating the fruit, even though God told them not to. God punished Adam and Eve, but he still loved them very much. We know that God will love us when we make wrong choices, but we want to think about our choices and avoid the wrong ones anyway. Family Pages "Wrong" balloons Pencils, 1 per kids Explain to the kids that they are going to pop the wrong balloons from the Sort It Out game using a pencil at a certain point in the prayer. If some kids do not want to pop their balloons, don t force them to. If some kids want to cover their ears at this point, let them do so. 42 Workshop Leader Guides

Prayer Time Forgiving God, We all have choices to make. We can choose to do right things or wrong things, and sometimes we don t make the correct choices. Forgive us when we make wrong choices and be with us always to help us make right choices. As we pop our balloons, help this noise remind us of your ability to forgive our wrong choices and make them disappear. Invite the kids to pop their balloons. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. bible SKILLS & games The First Sin 43

Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. bible SKILLS & games Open the Bible The First Sin Storytelling Welcome kids into your space. Hi, kids! Welcome to Bible Skills and Games. Today we re going to play some games to learn about the story of the first sin. When God made humans, there were just two to start with Adam and Eve and there was only one rule: Don t eat from one tree in the middle of the garden where they lived. That should have been an easy thing to do, right? Do you think Adam and Eve can follow this rule? Allow time for kids to respond. Let s read our story and find out what happens. Spark Story Bibles Spark Bibles Spark Bible Stickers None If your group is made up of primarily younger kids, distribute copies of the Spark Story Bible. Help kids open their Bibles to the story of The First Sin found on pages If your group is made up of primarily older kids, distribute copies of the Spark Bible, inviting kids to open to Genesis 3:1-24 on pages 4-5. Read the story or ask a volunteer to do so. Invite older kids in the group to place the Spark Bible Stickers in the story as desired. Following the story, take time to discuss. Allow time between each question for kids to respond. Well, it looks like Adam and Eve listened to the serpent that was The First Sin 45

tempting them instead of listening to God. Why do you think they did that? Take their answers. We sin when we fail to do something that God wants or asks us to do. Adam and Eve only had one rule, and they couldn t follow it. How many rules do you kids have? Is it hard to follow them all? Allow time for discussion. The feeling we get when we want to break a rule is called temptation. Sometimes temptation can come from another person like the serpent who convinced Adam and Eve to eat the fruit and sometimes it just comes from us. Either way, we have the choice to sin or not. Let s play some games to explore this more. Activate Faith (25 minutes) The Slither Relay Set Up: Make two copies of the Sneaky Serpent Relay Story Cards from page 51 in this guide. Cut apart the sheets so that you have two sets of eight story cards. Prior to the activity, set up two identical S-shaped courses of cones, spaced several feet apart, allowing spaces for kids to move through the courses. Set a mixed-up set of story cards at the far end of each course. Let s play a game called Sneaky Serpent Relay and practice our knowledge of the story. Get ready to play 1. Divide your group into two teams. Blend the ages so the teams are evenly matched. None Plastic cones Sneaky Serpent Relay Story Cards, 2 copies for the group Scissors Roller scooters, 2, optional Because the serpent was so tricky and tempted Adam and Eve, we are going to follow the snake s punishment and run this relay on our bellies. Explain that one by one, team members will slither down the course (either using a scooter on their bellies or army-crawling on their bellies), grab a single story card, and slither back to the team. As soon as all of the story cards have been collected, the team must work together to put the story puzzle together. The correct order will show scenes from the story in order. It will also spell out one question for the kids to answer. Why did Adam and Eve hide from God? The first team to correctly answer the question on the puzzle is the winner. 46 Workshop Leader Guides

Play the game When the kids are lined up and understand the game, you can begin. Following the game, take time to discuss. You all are fast serpents and story sorters! What was the question on your puzzle? (Why did Adam and Eve hide from God?) And what was the correct answer? (Because they gave in to their temptations and were naked and afraid) Good job! You all did great work. That serpent was awfully sneaky in the story! It was tempting Adam and Eve to sin. Sometimes, we can be tempted like Adam and Eve were, but sometimes, we can be the person talking someone into something he or she knows is the wrong thing to do. Temptation Quiz Game Set Up: Place each temptation in a paper lunch bag. Place the dud prize in a bag as well. Now we re going to play a Temptation Quiz Game about today s Bible story. Get ready to play 1. Divide your group into two equal teams. Make an effort to mix older kids and younger kids so that teams are equally matched Give each team a buzzer or bell. Have each team sit in a circle around their buzzer or bell. All kids should be an equal distance from the buzzer or bell. I will read a question. The first person who knows the answer can buzz in. If you answer the question correctly, you have a choice of taking the points for your team or taking a prize (indicate bagged prizes) just for yourself. If you take the prize, the points go to the other team. None Temptation Quiz Game Question Sheet (page 53) Two buzzers or bells Paper lunch bags (1 for each temptation) Assorted temptations (small pieces of candy, small toys or trinkets) Penny, paperclip, or similar dud prize bible SKILLS & games Play the game 1. Start the game by reading a 50-point question from the Temptation Quiz Game Question Sheet on page 53 of this guide Give the first kid to buzz in a chance to answer the question. If the answer is correct, let him or her choose between taking the points or taking a prize. If the prize is chosen, the kid can open the bag right away. The gift is for that individual kid, not the team as a whole. Note: The goal is to make it difficult for the kids to do the right thing by giving their team points. If the kid s answer is wrong, allow someone from the other team to answer the question. Continue the game as long as time, prizes, or questions allow. After the game, take time to discuss. Well, that was a fun game. How did it feel to have to choose between a prize for yourself and points for your team? Allow The First Sin 47

kids to respond. How did you make your decision? Allow kids to respond. Because our game was for fun, there wasn t anything bad about taking a temptation, but it did hurt your team. It is always our choice whether or not we give in to temptation. Adam and Eve made a bad choice, doing what God told them not to do, and they had to face the consequences by leaving the Garden of Eden. Giving into temptations always has consequences. Sometimes, it may get you into trouble with your parents or with God. Every time it hurts you. The good thing is that, even when we give in to temptation and sin, God will always forgive us. Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. Temptation can be tricky just like the serpent and it can take a lot of willpower to resist it. No matter how hard we try, we will all give in to temptation sometimes. But just like in Adam and Eve s case, God will always forgive us when we mess up. That s so wonderful, isn t it? You all did a great job today. Thank you for spending time with me and learning more about the first sin. Family Pages None Prayer Time Before we end our time together, let s pray together. Dear God, Sometimes temptation to do bad things in our lives is big. Help us to stay strong, and do the things that we know are right. Thank you for forgiving us when we let temptation take over. Thank you for loving us no matter what. Amen. 48 Workshop Leader Guides

Eve wanted the wisdom that the fruit would give her. Eve made Adam eat the fruit first. Adam Adam knew he was naked before he ate the fruit of the tree. Adam blamed eating the fruit on Eve. Adam hid with Eve when he heard God coming. God God knew Adam and Eve had eaten from the tree when they admitted they were naked. God stopped loving Adam and Eve because they ate the fruit. God made Adam and Eve clothes. Punishment of the serpent The snake was turned into a walking stick as punishment. God made the snake crawl on its stomach as punishment for tricking Eve.
