6 Behavioral System Figure 1: Behavioral Cage System Overview: Each behavioral system is custom designed to meet each users needs. The system typically is comprised of a controller board, behavioral cage, speaker/commutator adapter and 3 infrared pokes. The controller is designed to be used with any standard digital I/O controller. The I/O controller can be used to monitor the three poke IR beams and control the cage lights. The control board comes with two controllers for feeders. One set of feeder outputs uses a 24 volt signal for the Med

7 Associates style feeders and the second sends out a 5V pulse to trigger a feeder. The system is optically isolated from the TDT system and has a 500mW fuse. The system can be modified to be used with any commercially available recording system or D/A board. Behavioral Cage: The acrylic behavioral cage is a modular interlocking system. The cage is designed to be nonconductive to minimize electrical noise. There are two versions of the cage; Solid wall and bars. The cage with bars are curved to minimize reflection of auditory stimuli within the cage. Cage Assembly: The cage consists of a top, base, 3 poke walls, 2 door walls, and the door. 1) Place the base on a flat surface. The base has four green legs on the bottom side. 2) Insert the feeder pokes on the right and left side of the base. 3) Insert the nose poke on the back side of the cage. The RCA jacks should be outside the cage. Figure2: Cage base with pokes installed and waste tray. 4) Place the three poke walls over the pokes and into the slots on the base. Ensure that the curved surface faces the inside of the cage.

8 Figure3: Cage with poke walls installed. 5) Place the 2 door walls into the slots on the right and left side of the front of the base of the cage. 6) Orient the top over the tabs on the 5 walls and gently push down on the top. When assembled correctly the cage may wobble very slightly when force is applied to the top of the cage. 7) The door can be slid into the slots at the front of the cage.

10 Custom Speaker/Commutator Attachment: Your cage can be ordered with a custom attachment for a speaker and/or commutator. Use the machine screws provided to attach the speaker attachment to the top of the cage. The speaker then can be mounted to the speaker attachment followed by the commutator. Figure 5: A sample custom speaker/commutator adapter. Behavior Control Panel The behavior control panel is housed in a 19 rack mount enclosure. The power switch on the left side of the panel turns on and off all components. The DB25 connector is wired for a digital I/O controller. Adapters can be purchased for other configurations. The three knobs and LEDs are for the IR beam detectors and sensitivity control. The two BNC are TTL or 24 Volt outputs for feeders or other devices. The two audio jacks provide 24 volt to ground outputs for controlling Med Associates style feeders. The break out S-Video (6 pin with a ground) output connects to the breakout board to connect to the IR pokes. The yellow RCA jack is power output for the LED light provided with the behavioral system. The light override switch, when on, turns the LED light on irrespective of the control signal from the TDT system. When the override switch is off, the TDT system can control the lights.

11 Figure6: Behavior control board. Poke Attachment: The nose pokes are equipped with IR beams for detection of the animal. RCA jacks are used to connect the IR beams to the break out board. The breakout board is labeled for the three inputs; left IR, Nose Poke IR, Right IR. Figure 7: RCA jacks connected to the pokes and breakout board. The breakout board can now be attached to the behavioral control box via an S-video cable with a double shield (the shield must be connected). The bottom of the break-out board is not insulated and should not be set on metal surfaces.

Adjusting the IR Beam Sensitivity: Now that the IR beams are connected, the beam sensitivity can be adjusted. Plug in the DC power supply to the back of the behavior control panel. Turn on the power switch and start with the IR sensitivity switch set vertically. The LEDs on the behavioral control box should be off when the IR pokes are empty. When you block the beam, the IR lights should come on. The knob on the behavioral control box can be used to set the sensitivity of the IR beams. Turn the knob clockwise until the LED comes on, then turn it counter clockwise and stop when the LED shuts off. LED will not shut off: 1. Ensure the IR beam is not blocked or damaged. 2. Ensure the breakout board is not shorted by sitting on a metal object. 3. If the LEDs stay on irrespective of the knob position, check to make sure the pokes are plugged into the breakout board and poke. Ensure the Red cable is plugged into Red and White to White. 4. Ensure the S-video cable is plugged into the breakout board and behavior control panel. 5. Ensure the S-video cable is a 6-pin with a ground.

13 Controlling the Board Via DB25 with a TDT RP2.1: Figure 9 displays the pinouts for the behavioral control board pinout on the DB25 connector. Adapters can be made for other systems. Pins 3, 15, 16 are digital inputs from the IR beams. Pins 7, and 20 are the digital outputs to control both feeder outputs. Pin 19 is used to control the light. Pins 1 and 13 are grounds for the TDT system and pin 14 is the power. Figure 9: Behavior control board DB25 pinout.
