2 2 GENERAL THE ULTIMATE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL DISPENSE TABLETOP SYSTEM WITH A WIDE OPEN APPLICATION RANGE FOR COMBINED 2D (X, Y) AND 3D (X, Y, Z) MINIATURE FLUID HANDLING FOR MANUAL, SEMI AUTOMATED OR FULLY AUTOMATED OPERATIONS. THE MAIN RANGE OF APPLICATIONS IS: PROTOTYPE PRODUCTION, SMALL TO MEDIUM VOLUME PRODUCTION WITH FOCUS ON PRECISION AND FLEXIBILITY. THE IP-500 TABLETOP DISPENSER IS BASED ON A CARTESIAN POSITION SYSTEM WHICH CAN BE EQUIPPED WITH A WIDE RANGE OF MODULES TO OPTIMIZE YOUR APPLICATION PROCESS. MECHANICAL STRUCTURE The mechanical base structure is in-line capable, modular and can be equipped with application specific modules and peripherals. For flexible and precise dispense processes with repeatable results, the structure consists of: Base frame from aluminium casting Base plate and application plate made from nickel-plated aluminium Cartesian X/Y robot system with maintenance free linear motors and linear encoders. The Robot head can be supplemented with Z- and Theta-axis, pick&place tools, dispensers, and other modules Closed loop controls for all machine components Aesthetic appearance SOFTWARE AND PROGRAMMING All parameters, functions and configuration data of the IP-500 Tabletop are controlled via the user-friendly software VisualMachines TM. It s a object-oriented, open and modular in-house software solution. The single process steps are presented as small boxes which can be easily inserted in the process flow by drag-and-drop. That way the process sequence can be comfortably developed and optimized without any knowledge of a programming language. The user gets to the detailed information and parameters by clicking on the desired process box. STANDARD MODULES Universal Interface for Dispensig Valves This universal interface for dispensing valves allows to easely replace the dispenser type. It includes all electrical and pneumatic connectors for the supply of power, control signals and compressed air. Time/Pressure Dispenser The standard configuration includes a simple time/pressure dispenser system. This is used to dipense oil or lubricants grease, flux, solder mask, epoxies, UV adhesive, conductive silver glue and solder paste, encapsulant and many other materials as well as for marking with paint and varnish. The cartridge pressure is set manually and the process parameters are controlled by the machine software. The mechanical interface for the cartridge holder for 3cc, 5cc, 10cc or 30cc cartridges is fitted with a quick-change system directly to the Z-axis. The complete dispenser unit can be removed easily for cleaning purposes. Afterward the position of the dispensing needle can be calibrated fully automatic if the needed calibration peripherals are installed. Normally Luer-Lok dispensing needles with a length of 10mm, ¼, ½ or 1 are used.

3 3 Purge and Calibration Station including Stripping Thread and Camera Calibration Station The purge station is used to eject the rest material from the needle and to calibrate the dispensing unit. This station is typically used in combination with dispensing units using needles. Dripping material can be removed from the needle at the stripping thread. The purging cup is placed in a cavity and can be replaced easily for cleaning purposes. Dispensed dots can be set and measured with the camera on the round, black or white plate. Thus, the X and Y offsets can be automatically calibrated after each change of the dispensing unit. The camera is calibrated using the camera calibration station. The pixel size as well as the X, Y and Theta offsets of the optical camera axis are determined. Furthermore a touch probe for measuring the needle lenghth and an accurate temperature compensation dot is included OPTIONAL MODULES Downlooking Camera Unit The downlooking camera unit determines positions of landing areas on substrates and assemblies and teaches positions of peripherals. It is mounted to the Z-axis and can therefore automatically be positioned at the correct focus height. It has an integrated ring and coaxial light using white LEDs. Both light sources are individually adjustable in brightness. The used GigE camera has a resolution of 1296 x 966. Together with the 0.3x magnification optics, a field of view of 12mm x 16mm and a pixel size of 12.35μm is achieved. Other camera configurations on request. The image processing software Cognex Vision Pro is integrated into VisualMachines. Flexible PCB holder for 215mm x 370mm boards The PCB holder is used to fix various boards. It is designed so that a PCB with a thickness of 1.6mm is at standard working height. The PCBs are mechanically fixed and supported if necessary. Downlooking Touch Probe mounted on pneumatic Z-Slider The downlooking touch probe is used to measure Z-positions in order to execute the dispensing process at the correct height. It is mounted on a pneumatic Z-slider and can be moved 40 mm downward. The level of the resting measuring tip is about 20mm above the level of the Z-axis mounted peripherals and therfore the touch probe can be moved 20mm below the level of the dispensing unit. Screw Dispenser with Rotary Drive With the volumetric based displacement of the dispensing meterial, high viscous media with fillers can be dispensed such as solder paste. The screw dispenser with rotary drive is fitted with a quick-change system directly to the Z-axis. The cartridge pressure is set manually and the process parameters are controlled by the machine software. Usually 3cc, 5cc, 10cc or 30cc are used. The complete dispenser unit can be removed easily for cleaning purposes. Afterward the position of the dispensing needle can be calibrated fully automatic if the needed calibration peripherals are installed. 4 4 Micro Precision Screw Dispenser with Rotary Drive Compared to the screw dispenser, the micro precision screw dispenser has an integrated, backlash-free gear. It allows repetitive and precise dispensing dots, realized by an exact positioning of the dispensing screw. Jet Dispenser inclusive control unit and dispensing valve A jet dispenser is used to dipense oil and lubricants grease, flux, epoxies, UV adhesive, aqueous and organic solvents, silicones and many other materials as well as for marking with paint and varnish. It is fitted with a quick-change system directly to the Z-axis. The cartridge pressure and the process parameters are controlled by the machine software. Usually 3cc, 5cc, 10cc or 30cc are used. The complete jet dispenser unit can be removed easily for cleaning purposes. Afterward the position of the dispensing nozzle can be calibrated fully automatic if the needed calibration peripherals are installed. It does not have to be calibrated in Z-direction as the dispensing process is touchless and a small height variance of the nozzle is tolerable. LIQUIDYN PICODOS VERMES Dispensing Purge Tape Unit The dispensing purg tape unit is used as purge tape and as dispensing calibration station. After each dispensing point the tape indexes, so there is always a clean area. An illumination is installed behind the white dispensing surface as the dispensed pattern can be reconized well with the camera. Dispensed dots can be measured in order to calibrate the dispensing nozzles in X and Y direction. The dispensing parameters can be monitored continously and modified if necesssary. This way the repeatabilty of the required dispensing results is guaranteed. Optionally the diameter of the dispensed dot can be determined. Also the volume can be detemined with a additional side-mounted camera. The dispensing purge tape unit can be used in combination with all dispenser types. The tape can be easiliy replaced. Dispensing Purge Tape Unit including Cleaning Tape Unit A cleaning tape unit is integrated in addition to the dispensing purge tape unit. It is used to clean jet dispensing nozzles. Dripping material can be removed from the nozzles.

5 5 Dispensing Needle Cleaning Station The dispensing needle cleaning staion uses the Venturi effect in order to non-contact remove of tripping material at the dispensing needle using air pressure. For this process the dispensing needle is dipped into the cleaning nozzle. The collection container can be removed easily for cleaning purposes. This station can also be used as park position for dispensing needles. Dispensing Process Control Weight Scales The process control weight scales is used to measure and monitor dosages during the process. For example a defined number of shots with a jet dispenser can be applied into the measuring cup and the material will be weighed. The determined amount of the dispensed material is used for calibrtion purposes as well as for the automatic correction of the dispensing parameters during the process run. The scales can be loaded with a maximum of 21g and has a resolution of 0.01mg. ProgPressure Alternatively to the manual cartidge pressure regulation, the pressure can be controlled by the software. The adventage of this configuration is the flexibility in the process control. Since both parameters, time and pressure, can be directly controlled by the application software, it is possible to automatically correct variations in viscosity.
