1 CD Burner XP: Burning a CD or DVD This handout is devoted to burning data and audio CD/ DVD s and copying CD/DVD s. Please note that not all computers in the district have a CD/DVD burner. Check the CD/DVD drive faceplate (front of the drive) to see if the drive indicates it is an RW (rewritable drive). If the drive is an RW it will burn CD s or DVD s. Please note that Windows XP burner does not burn DVD s so CD Burner XP is the recommended burning software. 1. Insert blank media into the computer and click cancel to the popup message regarding what to do with the disc. Use this window if you are comfortable doing so, or click cancel and follow the directions below. 2. Start the burning software by going to Start, Programs, Multimedia and clicking CD Burner XP 3. Click on the desired type of CD or DVD you want to burn and then click OK. Common Disc Types Data Disc: to burn files and folders Audio Disc: to burn music/audio files only Copy or Grab Disc: to copy an original disc December 2011 Rev. 1 BL Pg 1
2 Burning a Data Disc: 1. Navigate to the files and/or folders you desire to burn to CD or DVD. Navigate to the files and/or folders you desire to burn to disc. 2. Select all the desired files and/or folders; drag and drop them down onto the disc. To select multiple files and/or folders click the first file with the mouse, hold down the control key on the keyboard and click the rest of the files needed. Select all the desired files and/or folders; drag and drop them onto the disc. December 2011 Rev. 1 BL Pg 2
3 3. The bar on the bottom of the window indicates the free space left on the disc. Note: you cannot exceed the total storage of the disc. Once you have all the files added to the disc, click the burn button. Add all files and click the burn button. The bar on the bottom indicates the amount of free space left. 4. If you want to add more files later, select leave the disc open. If you want to complete the disc, select finalize disc. The recommend setting is to finalize the disc to ensure the greatest life span of the files on the CD or DVD. If you so desire, utilize the advanced settings to customize the burning. 4 5. The burning progress will be shown Burning progress displayed 6. Once the disc completes, a popup will appear. The disc is now completed and ready to use. It is always recommended to immediately test a burned CD or DVD to be sure the process completed successfully. Burning an Audio Disc: 1. Navigate to the files and/or folders you desire to burn to CD or DVD. Navigate to the files and/or folders you desire to burn to disc. December 2011 Rev. 1 BL Pg 4
5 1. Select all the desired files and/or folders; drag and drop them down onto the disc. Note: only audio files can be added to an audio disc. 8 5. After the blank media is inserted the popup will disappear and the burning process will resume. The burning progress will show on the bar. Burning progress displayed 6. Once the disc completes, a popup will appear. The disc is now completed and ready to use.
