3 Attendance Policy Band at Liberty Middle School is Co-Curricular. Co-Curricular means that before and after school rehearsals and performances are graded events. Therefore, they are mandatory. Rehearsals are combined for a Summative grade and Performances are a stand-alone Summative grade. Band classes during school are separated by instrumentation, so it is critical that band members have an opportunity to rehearse as a whole group prior to concert performances. If a before or after school event is missed and the student would like to receive credit for the grade there are three makeup assignments and they are as follows: Make up Assignment 1 The student must come in to band hero sessions for the amount of rehearsal time missed. (ie. Student misses a 1 and ½ hour rehearsal they must come and do passoffs for 1 and ½ hours at a morning band hero session) Make up Assignment 2 The student must read a pedagogical passage assigned by Mr. Tyree and write a 300 word report. Make up Assignment 3 The student must record themselves playing passoffs for the amount of rehearsal time missed. (ie. Student misses a 1 and ½ hour rehearsal they must record themselves playing passoffs for 1 and ½ hours and turn the recording in to Mr. Tyree) In the event that your child is violently ill or there is an unavoidable conflict such as death in the family, marriage, etc. there is only one option for making up the Summative concert grade. Concert Make up Assignment The student must create an intonation chart for their entire instrument with the aide of a fingering chart, friend or parent, and tuner (takes roughly 3 hours). Please speak to Mr. Tyree before attempting any of these makeup assignments, so that you can make sure to receive full credit. There are also two guidelines for missed rehearsals: 1. For your child to be considered for next year s Symphonic Band he/she may only miss 3 before or after school rehearsals during the school year. 2. In order for your child to have the opportunity to participate in the band concerts this school year, he/she will need to attend at least one whole band rehearsal, either before or after school, prior to each concert. Because the Symphonic Band is the highest-level performance ensemble available at Liberty, I m sure that you will understand that it requires a higher-lever of commitment. If students are unable to make this level of commitment, then the Concert Band is the best placement for them. Concerts are special performances that require a lot of effort and man hours to put together for our musicians. Students who are unable to come to at least one rehearsal will be required to do the alternate assignment of a 500-word summary of an article chosen by Mr. Tyree about their instrument. 2

4 Yearly Calendar The calendar is created a year in advance with only minor changes throughout the year. All rehearsals and performances are mandatory for the members of the performing units. Any changes to the calendar throughout the year will be communicated more than 2 weeks in advance. If changes occur less than 2 weeks before the event please do your best to come, but you will not be penalized for missing. Why attendance is SO important When a band is missing one player the results can be very harmful. Sometimes the one person missing is the only person with a particular melody or rhythm. Without that player the melody or rhythm is not heard and can throw the whole piece into disarray. This effect can lead to devastating effects in a rehearsal or performance. Trying to have a band rehearsal without key members is like trying to have a football practice where your star quarterback is missing. Trying to play a concert without all of the members of a band is like trying to drive a car without one of the tires. You may get somewhere, but it ain t gonna be pretty. At one particular rehearsal in my last job the attendance situation came to a head. We had a Saturday rehearsal where 11 members of the band did not show up for various personal, but unexcused reasons. The 4 hour rehearsal was a waste of time and money. We had hired the conductor of the Emory Wind Ensemble to come and work with the students. He was amazing. The kids that showed up worked their tails off. They got so much better. The next Monday everyone was back together. We went through the music and it sounded the same as it had on Friday because the 11 who missed were no better than they were on Friday. This was extremely unfair for the other 36 students who worked VERY hard on a Saturday instead of doing something more relaxing. So, the moral of the story is please communicate about conflicts with rehearsal in advance, so that adjustments can be made, grades will be correct, and other kids won t suffer due to something that they can t control. 3

9 School Owned Instruments + Lockers School Owned Instruments The cost to rent a school owned tuba or bassoon is $100 for the year. All other school owned instruments are $75 for the year. The cost of the rental is to pay for chemical cleaning and yearly maintenance. The instrument must be checked out using the instrument rental form which can be obtained from Mr. Tyree or via the website on the forms page. The form will require information about the instrument and information about the renter. There will blanks on the form to fill out any damages. Please be VERY thorough with your description of the condition of the instrument, because when the instrument is turned in at the end of the year all damages not notated on the form will need to be repaired at the renter s expense. Basically the expectation is that the renter returns the instrument in the same or better condition than when he or she checked it out. Lockers Lockers will be rented on a seniority basis. 8 th graders and school-owned instruments get first pick, and then 7 th and then 6 th. Mr. Tyree will notify the students when locker checkouts may begin. The fee is $5 for the year. You must use a school-owned lock that Mr. Tyree will provide. All other locks will be cut off. 8

If the student scores amongst the highest in District 9 they will be invited to play in the District Honor Band. The Honor Band is conducted by a renowned professional in the world of music and plays on a very high level. The Honor Band experience lasts from a Friday through a Saturday. The 2 nd round audition consists of lyrical sight reading, technical sight reading, lyrical etude, and technical etude in front of two judges in a blind audition. If the student scores amongst the highest in Georgia they will be invited to play in the All State Band. The All State Band is conducted by a renowned professional in the world of music and plays on a very high level. The All State Band experience lasts from a Thursday through a Saturday in Athens, GA. Midfest is an honor band type event held at the University of Georgia. The group that is selected by Mr. Tyree for Midfest will travel to UGA and audition on the first day of the event. The audition will be similar to the District Honor Band audition. Once these auditions are completed the students will be sorted into ensembles based on ability level. Midfest bands are conducted by music staff at UGA and other high level musicians. The bands play on a very high level. The Midfest experience lasts from a Thursday through a Saturday in Athens, GA. Midfest will be from 12/8/16-12/10/16 (more ) 6 th Grade Honor Band 6 th Grade Honor Band participants will be selected by Mr. Tyree based on chair placement score and behavior. There will be a fee for participating members. Mr. Tyree will let you know if you have been recommended and you will be signed up once you turn in your deposit. If there is a financial hardship speak to Mr. Tyree. Scholarships are available. 6 th Grade Honor Band is similar to District 9 Honor Band, but it is only Forsyth County Middle Schools instead of all Middle Schools in District 9. There will be no auditions for the 6 th Grade Honor Band. Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluations Anyone who would like to work up a solo with accompaniment, solo without accompaniment, or small ensemble is eligible to participate in the Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluation. There is a fee for each performing unit. Mr. Tyree will sign you up once you pay the fee. If there is a financial hardship speak to Mr. Tyree. Scholarships are available. Solo and Ensemble is similar to the Large Group Performance Evaluation that the band program participates in in March. Each performing group or soloist will prepare a work of appropriate length and difficulty, play it for Mr. Tyree, if Mr. Tyree approves the performing group or soloist the player(s) will have an opportunity to play in front of a judge to receive a rating. The Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluation experience occurs on a Saturday at Riverwatch Middle School. Solo and Ensemble will be

18 Concerts + Rehearsals There will be 4 major performing ensembles this year. They will be 6 th grade band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Pep Band (7 th + 8 th graders only). If you are a part of the 6 th grade band all 6 th grade band concerts and rehearsals are mandatory (as defined by the co-curricular nature of the course) *see attendance section for more details. If you are part of the Concert band all Concert band concerts and rehearsals are mandatory (as defined by the co-curricular nature of the course) *see attendance section for more details. And the same for Symphonic band. If you are a part of the 7 th or 8 th grade band you might also be a part of the Pep Band. If you are part of the Pep Band all Pep Band performances and rehearsals are mandatory. If you are not part of the Pep Band you are NOT required to be at Pep Band rehearsals or performances, BUT all 8 th graders ARE required to be at all combined 7 th + 8 th grade concerts and rehearsals. Missing one part of the band diminishes the experience and performance level for ALL participants. When the band is missing one player it is like a machine missing one part. The machine might or might not work as it is supposed to, but if the outcome is valuable to you don t start the machine until all the parts are there. Trying to rehearse a band with missing players is like trying to play doubles in tennis without your partner. It is possible, but you are at a great disadvantage. Playing a concert without players is as frustrating as playing a football game with your third string quarter back against your biggest rival. Band is a team effort. The only way that the Liberty Patriot Band will excel and provide rich and meaningful music education is if EVERYONE is showing up. 90% of life is just showing up. Band is no different. 17

19 Off Campus Performances The Liberty Band Program will have multiple opportunities to perform off campus this year. When we leave campus every effort will be made to create an itinerary and publish it on the website in advance, so that you know what your child is doing and where they are. Most off campus performances will require a small fee for transportation and either a fee for meals or a requirement that the students bring their own money for meals. The Liberty Band Program will always have 1 adult for every 10 children when we leave school grounds to ensure the safety of your child. Concert Band (a portion of the 7 th + 8 th Grade band members) The Concert Band will perform at the Forsyth County Large Group Performance Evaluation which will most likely be held at West Forsyth High School, most likely in the month of February. The Concert Band will combine with the Symphonic Band and perform at a festival near Disney World in March. Symphonic Band The Symphonic Band will perform at the Forsyth County Large Group Performance Evaluation which will most likely be held at West Forsyth High School, most likely in the month of February. The Symphonic Band will perform at Lambert High School for the District 9 Georgia Music Educators Large Group Performance Evaluation in March. The Symphonic Band will combine with the Concert Band and perform at a festival near Disney World in March. 8 th Grade Our 8 th graders will perform at our 2 feeder high schools North and West Forsyth. Each 8 th grader will only attend the 8 th grade night of their future high school. The 8 th graders will also go to the Forsyth County Exhibition held in either September or October. Pep Band The Pep Band will perform at our recruitment trips to Sawnee + Matt Elementary schools in May. 18

20 Parent Organization The parent organization will meet once at the beginning of the school year and then before each major event that the band program puts on or participates in. (Check the calendar to see when the meetings will be.) Mr. Tyree and Mrs. Breeding will lead each meeting. Mr. Tyree and Mrs. Breeding will share the joys and successes that the band program is experiencing along with any struggles that need addressing. The parent organizations two roles are fundraising and volunteering. ALL program decisions will be made by Mr. Tyree and Mrs. Breeding. At these meetings there will be signup sheets to facilitate volunteering and chaperoning assignments. If we fail to meet the required amount of volunteers or chaperones the event will be cancelled. Mr. Tyree will communicate to the parents through the website, blasts, phone calls, parent organization meetings, and parent conferences. Most questions will hopefully be answered via this handbook, the website, and the calendar, but if questions do arise feel free to communicate with Mr. Tyree. The best ways to get in touch with Mr. Tyree and Mrs. Breeding 1. Attend the parent meetings Phone x Schedule a conference or meeting The WORST way to get in touch with Mr. Tyree or Mrs. Breeding 1. Approaching him or her immediately before, after, or during a rehearsal or concert. Let s make this year a success! Thank you for starting by reading all the way to the end of the handbook. Great job! You re a ninja! 19
