3 Introduction Dating from 1825, Brookleaze Buildings is a Grade II listed late Georgian artisans terrace in the heart of Larkhall Village. The terrace fronts two roads, Brookleaze Buildings to the front and Salisbury Road to the rear. The properties are constructed in limestone ashlar, with ashlar string courses, parapets and chimney stacks. The roofs would have originally been finished in Welsh slate, however, many have been replaced over the years. Windows along the terrace are generally sliding box sash (with differing pane configuration) and the majority of front doors are four panel doors with small rectangular lights over. I recently purchased No.5 Brookleaze Buildings as a probate sale, attracted by the fact that it is a property with so much potential to be restored sympathetically. It is currently the ugly duckling of the terrace, however, I intend to bring it back to its former glory and create a comfortable home for my family and I. 4 Replacement Entrance Door and Windows Entrance door to be replaced Rear windows to be replaced Front windows to be replaced (2 of 3 shown) The above photographs show the existing aluminium framed entrance door and four of the five windows to be replaced. Brookleaze terrace has an array of differing window styles, the majority being sliding sash, however, there are top and side hung casements to be found (No.4 and No.11 Brookleaze Buildings respectively). Photographs of some of the neighbouring properties windows indicating the many differing styles can be seen on the following page. The proposed replacement door and windows, will in my opinion, regain some of the property s original charm, benefitting the terrace as a whole, and closely resembling what may have originally been fitted back in JUSTIFICATION This application forms an additional element along with separate applications for internal alterations to renovate this listed property, currently in poor condition. Regional and national planning guidance encourages the continued usage as the best way to ensure survival of listed buildings, and by renovating and upgrading the property, this is ensured. Replacement of these poor quality aluminium windows represents a unique opportunity to not only restore the individual property, but also the terrace as a whole. I am proposing traditional lead weighted conservation box sash windows with lambs tongue glazing bars which allow for the installation of slimline double glazing. This is justifiable given the varying thicknesses of glazing bar evident along the terrace along with the extremely poor quality and inappropriate design / material of the existing windows, which can only be seen to improve the assets conservation. The replacement door will be a timber four panel door with two rectangular glazed lights over (very much like the front door of No.7 Brookleaze Buildings) with a bead and butt edge to all panels. The existing double glazed timber windows and door to the single storey lean-to extension at the rear of the property are to be retained. There is no alteration or destruction of historic fabric, and the significance is retained. 2
