1 Chelsey Odgers Lesson Plans Week #1 : June Theme: Art & Literature Project name: Cut book sculpture Supplies needed: Old books, x acto knives, scissors, pencils, paper and glue dots. Description: Campers will select their favorite book. Using imagery from the story, campers will use an exacto knife to cut an intricate design, illustrating a scene from the story. We will attach pages from books underneath to create a layered effect using glue dots. Project name: Building with paper Supplies needed: Old books, wire, scissors, hot glue sticks/gun. Description: Campers will use pages from an old book to create something 3d. They will use wire to create an armature (structure) that will hold their sculpture in place.

2 Project name: Book Cover Redesign Supplies needed: Paper, colored pencils, sharpies, rulers. Description: Campers will select a book cover, and create a new, modern design. Campers will sketch ideas first, and then create a full size sketch with color. Project name: Book binding Supplies needed: paper, string or yarn, glue, assorted drawing materials. Description: Campers will learn to bind their own books. They will decorate the pages inside using art journaling techniques.

3 Extra projects: Campers can focus on one character from a book and create an artwork of their choice that represents the character s personality. Week #2 : July 4 8 Theme: Art & Music Project name: Music in Photographs, Layered Collage Supplies needed: Camera (cell phone or digital), sharpies, clear transparency film. Description: Campers will use layered photographs to represent music, music notes or a specific song. Project name: Illustrated music Supplies needed: Sheet music, sharpies, colored pencils, markers. Description: Campers will create an illustration/design over sheet music. The illustration should represent the song or meaning behind it. The illustration can be abstract. Project name: Music Video/ Performance Art Supplies needed: Song, phone, idea!

4 Description: Campers will use stop motion animation to create a music video for a song of their choice. If laptops are available, campers will edit the movie and upload to LBIF s Youtube channel. Week #3 : July Theme: 3D Art Project name: Video game explosion Supplies needed: Colored paper, cardboard, x acto knives, scissors, glue, hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, acrylic paint. Description: Campers will use their favorite video game as an inspiration for this 3d sculpture. The explosion or characters coming to life, can be shown through a computer screen, controller, television etc. Project name: Paper Quilling Supplies needed: Colored paper, cardboard, x acto knives, scissors, glue, hot glue gun, hot glue sticks. Description: Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewelry, mobiles etc. Campers will create a line and shape design and use the quilling technique to make the design pop off of the page. Project name: Optical Illusion

5 Supplies needed: White drawing paper, HB pencil, gray marker, white colored pencil, black sharpie. Description: Campers will create a pencil drawing of an object which appears 3d. Week #4 : July Theme: Art & Nature Project name: Double Exposed Animals Supplies needed: Colored pencils, pencils, drawing paper, photograph of animal. Description: Campers will create the look of a double exposure photograph by creating a contour line drawing of an animal, and filling it in with an image of surrounding land or water. Campers will use LBI and the LBIF marsh as their inspiration.

6 Project name: Wood painting Supplies needed: acrylic paint, brushes, photograph. Description: Campers will use a tree slice or cut tree branch to create a miniature painting. Project name: Terrapin Turtle Repousse Supplies needed: aluminum, wood tools, scotch tape. Description: Campers will create an aluminum repousse of a terrapin turtle. They will begin by sketching the turtle (illustration or lifelike) and use the wood tools to make the image pop. Project name: Stick painting Supplies needed: tree stick, acrylic paints, canvas. Description: Campers will use natural elements as a paint brush, such as a tree stick or leaves. They will paint in a more impressionistic style. The subject of the painting is their choice.

7 Project name: Found object photograph Supplies needed: Found objects in nature. Description: Campers will search the LBIF campus for objects to use in their project. They will arrange the objects into a recognizable image, and take a photograph. They will print the photograph to be displayed in the art show. Week #5 : July Theme: Art & Films Project name: Pixar Presentation Package Supplies needed: foam core board, markers, sharpies, pencils, clay, paint etc. Description: Campers will put together a Pixar movie idea. They will create a storyboard, clay models of the characters and even create a movie poster for advertisement purposes. Week #6 : August 1 5 Theme: Art Ages Project name: Art history letters

8 Supplies needed: cardboard, paper cups, newspaper, glue, acrylic paint, brushes. Description: Campers will use paper mache to create large 3d letters. They will choose an art movement (ex: pop, op, impressionism) to inspire their project. They can choose a word that represents the movement, the movement itself, or the word art. Campers will use acrylic paint to recreate an iconic work from that movement. Project name: Plaster portraits Supplies needed: plaster of paris strips, mask mold, acrylic paint, brushes. Description: Campers will study various portraits throughout history. They will select one work and create a mask of the face in the portrait. They will mimic the style of the artist when painting the mask. Project name: Favorite Number Supplies needed: Black sharpies, colored pencils, markers, HB pencil, blending tool. Description: Campers will create a Charles Demuth 5 Inspired Drawing using pen and ink, with accents of color. Campers will choose a number that is significant to them, and use zentangles and shading to create the tiled background.

9 Week #7 : August 8 12 Theme: Art & Architecture NO TEEN ARTS THIS WEEK: Chelsey vacation Week #8 : August Theme: Art & Psychology Project name: Left Brain, Right Brain Supplies needed: drawing paper, watercolor paints, HB pencil, sharpie. Description: Campers will illustrate the left and right brain to show the functions of each. See examples. Project name: Emotion

10 Supplies needed: choice Description: Campers will be given an emotion (sad, happy, angry, worried, digust etc.) and will use their work of art to show the emotion. Campers have the choice to create something 2d or 3d and can use any materials available. Week #9 : August Theme: Art & Movement Project name: Slow Motion Supplies needed: pencils, colored pencils, paint, paper, sharpies & transparency sheets. Description: Campers will show movement in various stages in one drawing or painting. They will start by creating a human form, using paper and round fasteners, and move it to various positions to aid their drawing/painting.they will use sharpies to draw on transparency sheets so you can see each layer of the motion.

11 Project name: Op Art Supplies needed: pencils, colored pencils, paper. Description: Campers will use an optical illusion pattern to create the sense of movement. They will have a choice of various Op art patterns. Project name: Pop Art Thought Supplies needed: paper, watercolors, pencils, sharpies. Description: Campers will create a Pop Art inspired image of a moment frozen in time. They will create a story behind the image and include at least one thought bubble for the character. Campers will draw the image and use watercolors to paint. Outlines will be traced in Sharpie once the paint is dry.

12 Week #10 : August 29 September 2 Theme: Art & You Project name: Minimal Self Portrait Supplies needed: Paint swatches in different colors, white drawing paper (large), scissors, glue, picture of camper. Description: Using warm and cool color schemes, campers will create a minimal self portrait using cut paint swatches. They will create a grid of squares on the large drawing paper, and use the cut paint swatches to create the features of the face. Project name: Where I m From Supplies needed: Sharpies, maps, picture of camper. Description: Campers will use stippling to create a self portrait. They will create the portrait on or near the country where their family is from on a map. Project name: Non traditional self portrait Supplies needed: Various supplies. Supplies will be determined by camper.

13 Description: Campers will look at a few examples of a non traditional self portrait. They will choose how they want to create their own and what materials they would like to use. Extra project: Campers will use acrylic gel to create a photograph transfer. They will use markers and sharpies to color the image and add layers.
