3 MAYOR S MESSAGE / CONTENTS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Bears and some other mammals hibernate all winter long, people in Woodstock do not have to. As Mayor of the City of Woodstock, it brings me great pleasure to introduce the Fall/ Winter/Spring Recreation & Leisure Guide. The city and numerous groups have combined their efforts to offer something for every age. Take time to read the guide and see what piques your interest. You are never too old to try something new. There are a growing number of recreational programs and activities offered through city run programs and from a variety of community groups to keep you and your family active and engaged throughout the seasons. Tired of sobbing over the exploits from the blue and white in Toronto? Get out to cheer on our own at a Navy Vets game. Think your sweeping talents are being wasted in your home? Try curling. On behalf of City council I encourage all citizens to participate in one or more programs available for your health and well-being, and encourage others by getting out to cheer them on. There is truly something for everyone in this city! Trevor Birtch, Mayor This Guide can also be accessed on the city s website at COPYRIGHT STATEMENT 2015, The City of Woodstock. The Recreation & Leisure Guide is produced two times a year. Every effort has been made to provide correct information, however details may change from the time of publication. Please refer the City of Woodstock Departments for up to-date information concerning your area of interest. SWIMMING LESSONS INFORMATION What to expect from swimming lessons Developing swimming skills requires a lot of practice and positive feedback to be successful. We encourage you to talk with your child about his/her lessons. Make sure that you have realistic expectations and your child feels no pressure to pass a level. You both should acknowledge the importance of completing the skills taught in each lesson at a pace that is suitable for your child. Swimming lessons are a long-term progression. First Lesson In our effort to ensure that your child receives the best possible instruction, we ask that you bring your child s most recent report card with him/her to the first lesson. This will help your swim instructor tailor their classes to effectively meet the needs of each child. Parent Feedback Day On the 5th day of lessons, instructors will end lessons five (5) minutes early to give parents/guardian an opportunity to ask questions and see how their child is doing in their swim lessons. Photo Day To allow for the privacy of all participants, pictures of swim lessons will only be permitted to be taken during the 5th week of lessons. Progress Evaluation All participants in swimming lessons are evaluated on an ongoing basis throughout the session. Feel free to talk with instructors to get an update on your child s progress. Progress Reports Progress reports are given out at the end of the session. To access the report by using the swimmer ID given by the instructor, visit Forgot or lost the swimmer ID number? No problem. Contact Southside Aquatic Centre and aquatic staff will be able to help you. Registration and Transfers Registration will be permitted as long as space is available. Transfers will be permitted for the first two weeks of lessons. Waiting Lists If your child cannot be placed in any of your class choices, he/she will be placed on a waiting list, in numerical order, for your requested class time. If a spot opens staff will contact you and inform you that a spot is available and you will have 24 hrs. to register for your reserved spot. Cancelled Lessons Sometimes excellent programs with super instructors are cancelled when too many people wait until the last minute to register. Don t wait, avoid disappointment and register early! Classes with low enrolment will be either cancelled or combined with another level approximately 10 days prior to the start date. Instructors, Assistant Instructors and Volunteers All classes will be taught by a qualified instructor. Our instructors have spent more than 200 hours taking courses and volunteering in Aquatic Instructional Programs to prepare them to teach your children. As well, our assistant instructors are assigned to programs each evening. They are our future instructors and have spent more than 100 hours taking courses and volunteering in preparation to assist with classes. The assistant instructors are assigned to classes the supervisor feels would most benefit from their involvement. 6 Recreation & Leisure Guide Fall/Winter/Spring
