4 What are development trusts? Over 450 trusts across the UK They reach a quarter of the UK population A combined income of over 260m Of which 106m is earned income Nearly 500 million community owned assets 4 4,500 staff and 17,000 volunteers
5 Development Trusts Association What does the DTA do? Support the development of new and emerging trusts Help existing trusts to work more effectively Work to get others to support the movement 5

10 Fabulous Beasts! business start ups, managed workspace, recycling, environmental improvements, management of public space, micro credit, advice and debt counselling, welfare advice, energy efficiency advice, family support, child care services, community grants schemes, affordable housing, volunteering, job training, supplementary education, youth work, community safety, transport schemes, festivals and arts activities, sports and leisure, community cafes and restaurants, food markets, healthy living schemes. and much, much more. 10
11 How do they do this? Community and social enterprise Businesses with social objectives whose surpluses are reinvested in the business or in the community. 11 Community assets Freehold or leasehold in an asset such as a building or a piece of land. Not just traditional community buildings.

Managed workspace, industrial buildings, visitor centres, marina, sports facilities, training facilities, shops, cafes, cinema, housing, green space, car parks, community centres, live/work space, health centres, nursery, transport (buses), wind farm, arts centres. and an abattoir! 12
