1 Historical Fiction Graphic Novel Tower Project -8 parts You are going to create your very own GRAPHIC NOVEL based upon a cultural time and setting we studied this semester: Egyptian, Roman, Greek, African, or Chinese. You will use Power Point to create the JPG images for your graphic novel, export them into Wiloworlds and create a 3d novel! You will upload your exported slides to your uploader so please make sure you know how to log in to your Wiloworlds uploader. Please read all 8 steps. You will complete 1 step each day, and submit a program screenshot here in the course area as evidence you are working in your tower. You are going to use your ENTIRE TOWER to complete this assignment. Please clear all the levels before you begin but be sure to take screenshots of existing projects you may have in your tower. 2 First Floor Day One- BRAINSTORMING IDEAS Today you are going to brainstorm ideas for your very own Graphic Novel. This is what Raina said about coming up with ideas for a Graphic Novel All good stories have to start somewhere. My ideas come from many places, and the origins of my stories can either be pictures or simple sentences. With Drama, the glimmers of the idea came from just thinking about my own theater days in high school, and the friends I made during that time. I looked at lots of old photographs, and considered writing a story about drama kids. I wanted them to be on stage crew, which is something I always wanted to try but never did. Callie s name came to me when I was driving around northern California a couple of years ago, and the song Goin Back to Cali was playing on the radio. That s embarrassing, but there you have it. 1. Go to the SAMPLE DISPLAY TOWER (top floor) and look at the MIND MAP about dogs. 2. Start your own MIND MAP on the BOTTOM FLOOR of YOUR TOWER (don t forget that ALL your tower floors need to be cleared for this assignment). 3. Your MIND MAP should include GRAPHIC NOVEL IDEAS as the mid-point. From there, you are free to brainstorm. You may be drawn to a specific Culture upon which to write, or you might want to put a couple of your top choices on your Mind Map (i.e. China and Egypt). The story line can be drawn from Family, Friends, School, Hobbies, or any number of things. You may want to browse CLIP ART (PERSON, PEOPLE, ANIMALS, CHARACTERS, etc.) for Characters to your story. 4. After you have finished your MIND MAP, TAKE A SCREEN SHOT. 5. Copy your SCREEN SHOT on a Word Document and include your final topic choice. (I.e. I choose to write a story about a boy named that takes place in AFRICA.) Planning Ahead: Watch the videos links below so that you understand how you will draw and create your story in Power Point. As you begin to develop your ideas, you may want to search Clip Art and other images that match your story. These will be used as illustrations later.

3 Day Two- Pitch Second Floor Today you will write a PITCH. Summarize your story into a few sentences. Below is Raina s PITCH for the book, DRAMA. Your PITCH should be similar to hers. Raina s Pitch: Eventually, an idea needs to be turned into a pitch. Can the story idea be summarized in a couple of paragraphs? It needs to be, if it s going to be published. Drama s pitch was simple: The kids of Eucalyptus Middle School are putting on a school play. Callie is a set designer who keeps falling for the wrong boys. She makes friends with two twin brothers, Justin and Jesse, and their friendship becomes as dramatic as the play itself! But the show must go on, and everyone must work together in the end. Or something like that. Your characters can be chosen from CLIP ART or other images. Please include a picture of your characters along with your pitch.

4 Day Three-Detailed Outline- Third Floor Now is the time for you to prepare your story outline! Start with title, setting, main characters, and problem. Then fill in the beginning, middle, and end. Please be sure you have answered the questions below using signs and pictures in your tower. Title Setting Main Characters Problem/Conflict Beginning: What will you do to grab the attention of the audience? How does the story begin? From which point of view is the story being told? What questions will be left unanswered in this section? How do the characters relate to one another (may be answered in the middle, too) Middle: Who do the characters meet along the way? What odds will they face? How will the characters face their challenges? What additional information is important? End: How do the characters resolve their problems? Or do they? What have the characters learned What has the reader learned? This is just a general guideline for your outline. You may add a little to this. Remember, this is NOT the story, this is just an outline. Think of this as a road map along the path of writing your Graphic Adventure.

5 Days Four and Five- Thumbnails- Third Floor Continued Today you will create a thumbnail for your story. This is a draft of your story, but without the finished pictures. Here s what Raina has to say about Thumbnails: when you ve thumbnailed your book, you know exactly how long it s going to be, and have a pretty good idea of what it s going to look like! The drawings aren t finished, but this draft can now be read by an editor. This is where my publisher steps in and decides whether the story is good or not. Does it need to be revised? Edited? Expanded? Shortened? It s much more economical to edit thumbnails than finished artwork, so I m happy to work out all the kinks here. Your thumbnail should include the ENTIRE story, and a general idea of the pictures. You will put more time into developing the pictures in the following assignments. I will read your thumbnail and make suggestions in Writing Workshop. We will discuss your progress and I may suggest you add or delete certain sections; just like an editor! This meeting with the editor will be on the Third Floor of your Tower. You are moving UP your Knowledge Tower with each step of your writing. Watch the video links below so that you understand how you will draw and create your story in Power Point. You may Search Clip Art and other images that match your story. 6 Day Six- Detailed Drawing and Lettering With your layout complete, you can now take some time to detail your pictures and decide on your final lettering. Be sure your pictures look just right and are representative of your creativity. There is nothing to add to your tower today but please upload notes on your progress for today. Day Seven- Marketing and Advertising Fourth Floor- TOP Time to get us excited to read your Graphic Adventure! Construct your final novel on the top level of your tower! Refer to your draft, notes, layout as your complete the final version. Take a screenshot and upload it today so I know your novel is ready for us to read! Day Eight- Final Graphic Novel Due We will join you on the Fourth Floor of your Knowledge Tower to read your story. Each student will be responsible for giving you a peer review of your story. You worked very hard on this story! We will be a supportive audience as you to share your masterpiece. Personal Evaluation on your own graphic novel Answer these questions on the top floor of your tower next to your final project: How did it go? What was your favorite part of the writing process? What was the most difficult? After watching yesterday s presentations, what would you change about your story? How would you incorporate your classmates ideas? Is there a sequel to your book? Share any other thoughts you have.
