Joomla Simple Image Gallery Documentation The Simple Image Gallery Plugin is installed on your web site. It is a useful mechanism to support the display of photos and/or other graphic images. To work with Simple Image Gallery, you must first login to your Joomla site as an Administrator. You will find the Administration login page at a URL similar to the following: where sitename is replaced by the web address name for your site. Once logged in, you will see the Manager Control Panel page. CREATING A GALLERY FOLDER IN THE MEDIA MANAGER: Click the Media Manager icon to open it.
By default, all site images and files are stored within the "images/stories" folder. To create a gallery, you will first create a new folder (within your site s images/stories folder) to hold all of the gallery images. Double click the stories folder icon from the Files area or single click the stories folder in the navigation tree in the left column. You will open the stories folder and display any sub-folders that are already available. To create a new folder at this level, type the name of the new folder (see example below where the new folder will be photogallery) and then click the Create Folder button. Next you will upload the images to the folder you created. PLEASE NOTE: Be sure to prepare your images correctly BEFORE uploading them. Images should be 72 dpi and all of a standard size. 640*480 pixels or 480*640 pixels works well for most web site graphic displays. Your image files should also be saved for the web as jpg files (or gif if line art). The images should be named appropriately no spaces or special characters. (Example image names: fieldday1.jpg, fieldday2.jpg, choir_practice.jpg, bookfair.jpg, owlmascot.jpg). Also note that ALL images you place in the folder (used for a gallery) will be displayed. Double click the new gallery folder to open it. Use the Upload File section at the bottom of the Files display to Browse to the first image you want to upload. Then click the Start Upload Button. The image will appear as a thumbnail within the folder.
Repeat the upload process until you have added all the photos you want to the gallery folder. (In this example, the folder is photogallery.) CREATING A NEW ARTICLE TO DISPLAY YOUR GALLERY: If this is your first gallery, you will also need to create an article to display your gallery and then add menu item to display it. (Note: A Joomla article provides the contents for the body of the web site. You need a menu item to call up the display of the article from the Joomla database.) You can return to the Joomla Control Panel by selecting it from the Site dropdown menu. Then click the Add New Article Button. The New Article Form will display. Fill in the Title of the Article. (It is not necessary to add the alias as the system will create it for you from the title if you
do not enter it.) Unless you use Sections on your site, select Uncategorized from the dropdown Section menu. Next enter the text about the Gallery you are creating. See below for one example that has instructions about viewing the images. In addition, you will probably want to describe the images or the activity the photos are from. Where ever you want the actual images to display in the article, type in the following line: {gallery}foldername{/gallery} where foldername is the name of the folder containing the images you want to display. Example: {gallery}photogallery{/gallery} When are you
finished creating your new article click the Save (disk) icon in the toolbar on the top right. (Note: Once you have saved your article, you can use the Article Manager, to edit and re-save it with changes.) ADDING A MENU (NAVIGATION) ITEM TO LINK TO YOUR GALLERY: In order to display the new gallery page from the navigation on your web site, you need to add a menu item that links to the new article you created. Select Main Menu* from the Menus Dropdown in the toolbar at the top right of the Joomla Manager. The Menu Item Manager for the Main Menu (navigation items on the home page) will appear. Click the New button in the toolbar in the upper right hand corner to create a new menu item to link to your new gallery article. The Menu Item Type is Articles (under Internal Link). Click on Articles to expand the choices of Article and then select Article Layout.
The Article Layout New Menu Item form will open. Enter the Title of your Menu Item under the Menu Item Details section in the left column. (It is not necessary to enter the Alias or to make any other changes to the left column of the form.) Under Parameters (Basic) in the right column, you will click the Select button to open a popup window listing all of your articles. Select your new gallery article. (In the example below, the selected article is Photo Gallery.) Then click the SAVE (disk) icon to save your new menu item. As soon as you click SAVE, the new menu item will appear when your site is accessed. (SEE IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW!) Example of Popup Article Selection Window: IMPORTANT INFORMATION: New Main Menu items are placed at the bottom of your navigation. In most cases, this is NOT where you want the new gallery item to be since you would prefer that the WPS60 Web Site link is the last item listed in your home page navigation. To fix this, scroll to the bottom of the Menu Manager screen. In the example below, you will see that Photo Gallery is listed last. To move it up, click on the green Up triangle.
Each time you click the Up triangle, you will move the menu item up one position. Continue until you have the new gallery item listed in the correct order for your navigation. See screen shot below for an example. The new Photo Gallery is now available from the navigation and is positioned just above the WPS60 Web Site link. Clicking the photo gallery link will display your article and the images. The Greenwood site also uses Simple Image Gallery to display photographs of student artwork. Below is an example of the Art Gallery article. In this article you will see that text has been placed both above and below the code to display the gallery.
WEB SITE DISPLAY SAMPLES OF SIMPLE IMAGE GALLERY: Clicking on a specific image thumbnail will open it in its full size over the current web page.
ADDITIONAL AND ADVANCED INFORMATION: TROUBLESHOOTING: If the images do NOT display, please contact It is possible that the Simple Image Plugin is not installed or not activated on your web site. The default setting size for the thumbnails is currently 80 by 80 pixels. If you would like the thumbnails on your site to be larger, please contact with the specific size request. Be SURE that you prepare your images correctly BEFORE uploading them. NOTE: Images are displayed in alphabetical order by filename. If you want one image to appear before another, you can use numbers or letters in the names to force the order. Examples: a-program1.jpg, b-program2.jpg, c-choirdirector.jpg, d-audience.jpg OR 1-scienceprojects.jpg, 2-judges.jpg, 3-awardsceremony.jpg, 4- winners.jpg All images within a folder designated as a gallery will display. You can use the Media Manager to add more images to your gallery at any time. If you want to remove images from the folder, see Deleting Images below. DELETING IMAGES: It is easy to remove images from a gallery folder. Use the Media Manager to access stories/images/ and then the folder containing your gallery. Click the red X by the image you want to remove. BEWARE!! There is NO warning and images are deleted immediately when the red X is clicked!!
ADDING MULTIPLE GALLERIES TO ONE ARTICLE: It is easy to add multiple galleries to one article. For example, you could create an Art Gallery article for your school with separate galleries for each grade level. To do this you would first create a folder for each grade level within the stories/images folder. You might call the folders art1, art2, art3, etc. Once you have placed the prepared images within the folders, you would create your Art Gallery article using text something like the following. Welcome to our Art Gallery. We have sections for each Grade Level. Grade 1 Art Gallery: See our collages, finger paintings and shape animals. {gallery}art1{/gallery} Grade 2 Art Gallery: See our watercolors and paper weavings. {gallery}art2{/gallery} Grade 3 Art Gallery: See our clay animals and our cave paintings. {gallery}art3{/gallery} ETC LINKING TO A GALLERY ARTICLE FROM ANOTHER ARTICLE: It is also possible to set up an Article/Page that has links to multiple gallery articles/pages. This is a good solution if you expect to have many galleries related to different activities over the course of the school year and do not want all of the thumbnail graphics appearing on the same main page. For example, to do this you could create a main School Photo Gallery article linked from a School Photo Gallery menu item. The main School Photo Gallery article might then have a list of the specific activities that link to gallery articles/pages with the actual information and thumbnails. (NOTE: The actual links to the gallery articles/pages cannot be set up UNTIL the folders with images are created and the articles for each gallery are created.) Photo Gallery Back to School Back to School 4 th Grade Play Choir Concert Black History Field Day For each actual gallery would need to have a folder of images within the Media Manager under stories/images. Each gallery would also need to have an article created that included the appropriated {gallery}foldername{/gallery} code to display the specific gallery. To create the links on the main School Photo Gallery page to the actual gallery articles, you will need to know the ArticleID of each gallery article you want to link. You will find the ArticleID in the upper right corner when you review it from the Joomla Article Manager. (See sample below where the ArticleID is 18.)
After you know the ArticleIDs of all the galleries you want to link up, go to the main School Photo Gallery article and select the text you want to link. Then click the Link (chain link) icon in the Article Editor toolbar. The Insert/Edit Link window will open. The only thing you need to do is to add the direct link to the article. The format is listed below. In this case, since the ArticleID=18, the text you would enter is: index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18. Then click the Insert button to return to the Article Editor.
The following code will call an article that is NOT a part of a menu/navigation) from another article. The XX stands for the ArticleID of the article you wish to link to. index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=xx You will repeat the above steps to link up each of your specific gallery pages to the main School Photo Gallery page. QUESTIONS/ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE: If you need assistance setting up Simple Image Gallery on your web site or if you have questions or problems, please contact webmaster@wps60.org.
