1 The New National Curriculum and assessment

2 The reorganisation does not include any changes to the four key stages in England. These are: Key Stage 1: Ages 5 to 7 (Years 1-2) Key Stage 2: Ages 7 to 11 (Years 3-6) Key Stage 3: Ages (Years 7-9) Key Stage 4: Ages (Years 10-11) Key Stage 5: Ages (Years 12-13) The new curriculum retains the main subject areas - English, Maths, Sciences, History, Geography, Art, Foreign Languages, Design Technology, Music, Sport and PE, Drama etc

4 There are changes to the content of all subjects in the national curriculum. A summary can be found on the Department for Education website. In Maths, children will be expected to learn more at an earlier age - for example number bonds to 20 and count to 100 in YR, to know their 12 times table by the age of nine, convert decimals to fractions in Y6, e.g =3/8) no calculators until end of KS2 History will take a more chronological approach than under the old curriculum for example Stone age, Iron age, Romans. Saxons, Vikings, Normans etc In English, pupils will learn more Shakespeare and there will be more importance placed on spelling and grammar (apostrophes and commas in KS1), debating will be key (see: The new computing curriculum will require pupils to learn how to write code as well as use computers. In science, there will be a shift towards hard facts and "scientific knowledge". Evolution will be taught and topics such as caring for animals replaced by topics such as circulatory system

5 The aim is to slim down the content of the curriculum in almost all subjects, though not in primary school English, Maths and Science. There is certainly a greater content and higher expectation in Maths and English. The government says the new curriculum does not tell teachers "how to teach", but concentrates on "the essential knowledge and skills every child should have" so that teachers "have the freedom to shape the curriculum to their pupils' needs". The new curriculum covers primary school pupils, aged 5 to 11, and secondary schools pupils up to the age of 14. A new curriculum for 15- and 16-year-olds will come into force from September 2015.

6 The elements that require statutory force will come into effect for the majority of year groups from September For pupils in year 2 and year 6 the new English, Mathematics and Science programmes of study will be introduced from September We are teaching from Curriculum 2014: no disadvantage Schools should remember that the school curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences that each school plans for its pupils. The National Curriculum forms just one part of the school curriculum it is 201 pages long! Review in place children need and deserve more Key Stage 1? Schools are free to choose how they organise their school day as long as the content of National Curriculum programmes of study is taught to their pupils. Schools need to plan their curriculum with their children, their own ethos and the demographic and geographical location of the school in mind. Keep calm & carry on

7 No longer levels such as 2b, 3c etc. as previously. Expectations are in year groups, with a focus on pupils securely achieving/exceeding and not on progressing to learning for the next year group. Inclusion? You will hear teachers talk about three key words when discussing your child s attainment : Your child is either: Emerging (at the beginning) Expected (met or developing) Exceeding (above) Formative and summative assessments will still take place. start of YR, key assessment milestones at end of Y2, Y4 and Y6. We will work towards outstanding progress irrespective of outcomes (the distance that children have come regardless of starting point)

8 We have used information from parents, Governors, staff and pupils to try to establish a curriculum that is broad, balanced, engaging and relevant Drivers are: 1. Community cohesion/social responsibility 2. Enterprise/independence & challenge 3. ICT 4. Outdoor/environmental learning (particularly KS 1) We always review this annually

10 By choosing to send your child to a small village school with limited budget/capacity we inevitably will have mixed age groups and outcomes show that this works well Children still remain in the year group for their age irrespective of their age except in exceptional circumstances, e.g. statement All planning is overseen by Senior Leader Children are assessed regularly and may be in different groups for different aspects of learning, e.g. number vs. time/fractions Children of the same age group are given equal opportunities (within constraints) in school over the course of a year, e.g. playing ukulele in KS2, outdoor learning, visits, working with professionals and swimming

12 Support learning by: Reading & checking comprehension Learning spellings, e.g. words, prefixes etc Encouraging consistent use of punctuation and grammar Learning number facts and times tables. Use these in contexts apply the learning and use inverse Praise all steps and make it fun! But encourage independence and willingness to have a go. THANK YOU!.
