1 A brief history of Women s Bowls NSW Uniform regulations The following description of bowls uniforms in NSW has been developed by reference to the Association s meeting minutes, publications and policies. Prior to the creation of the NSW Ladies Bowling Association in 1929 uniforms were regulated by local clubs. Bowlers in : The NSW Ladies Bowling Association was formed in November with Torpey Place, Balmain, Leichhardt, Western Suburbs and Rose Bay being the founding clubs (however they were not the only clubs in existence at this time). The Association badge in use from : The Association changed its name to the New South Wales Women s Bowling Association. NSW Women Bowlers in uniform in : The State President was empowered to approach any lady bowler appearing on the bowling green in what she deemed to be unsuitable attire and that lady may be asked to leave the green. Also that all white or cream must be worn, no colour of any description, not even coloured beads. Yellow or other coloured dusters were strictly forbidden and Association badges were to be worn on hats.

2 1945: Dresses: white, long sleeves, 13 from ground Hats: white closed crown and brim Eye shades: worn under hats Stockings: white on all occasions No: coloured buttons, handkerchiefs, ornaments, earrings or dusters NSW Women bowlers in uniform in : 1954: Hat bands: white with blue lettering Sockettes: white over white stockings

3 1962: Club blazers: allowed to be worn to and from clubs only a motion to allow the wearing of club blazers at all times was lost. 1964: Hats: may be removed while playing night bowls Length of frocks: change from 12 to 13 from the ground not approved Hats: green lining under brim of hats not approved 1964 Women Bowlers in uniform note the even length of the frocks from the ground. 1965: Hats: allowed to be removed in clubhouses for reasons of personal comfort on ordinary days

4 1966: Frocks: crimplene fabric approved Length of frocks: approved change from 12 to 13 from the ground Hats: green lining under brim of hats not approved unless a Doctor s certificate was provided Plain sleepers only allowed Ornate earrings not allowed 1968: New NSWWBA badge approved, replacing the badge in use since ads for uniforms 1970: Length of frocks: approved change from 13 to 14 from the ground Stockings: beige stockings were not approved Frocks: front closing zippers allowed

5 1971: Stockings: mini beige coloured stockings were approved Socks: White bobby socks approved to be worn over beige stockings Blazers: permitted to be worn by International players Belts: if worn, needed to be the same colour as the frock Length of frock: no shorter than 3 below crease at the back of the knee Sleeve length: 2 above the elbow Hats: must be worn for twilight bowls 1973: Frocks: white sports frocks with belt or white shirtmaker no more than 15 from the ground Stockings: must be mini beige some stockings, especially support, were too dark Cardigans: white plain machine knitted or crocheted Skivvies: approved for warmth only and must not be seen above the collar of the uniform at the back Polo neck jumpers: not permitted 1974: Uniforms: must be worn by members attending to do kitchen duty only Uniforms: officials attending a meeting before or after bowls must be in uniform Blazers: white with Association badges could be worn over street clothes but it was hoped that good taste would govern this problem. The Association would be most distressed to know the blazer was not being worn over suitable attire. Hats: must be worn for Twilight blows from the beginning to the end of the fixture, however when playing night bowls hats may be removed Wind jackets: Dri Clad wind jackets were approved 1975: Slacks: No slacks are to be worn on the bowling green, skirts and frocks are much more suitable Hats: wearing of hats for night bowls was approved as optional 1977: Bowling frocks: correct bowling slips must be worn under transparent bowling frocks to prevent undue criticism of the uniform Earrings: small gold studs only approved

6 1979: Slack suits: white slack suits were not approved 1980: Hats: allowed to be removed with the approval of the President Hats: allowed to be removed after presentations following games Hats: could be removed after 5pm at twilight bowls Hats: need not be worn by social ladies when they are working [prior to this ruling bowlers not playing, who attended the club to cater, for example, were required to wear uniforms including hats] 1981: Slacks: approved for rolling up Slack suits: approved for wear during play Blazers: navy colour not approved Badges: Affiliation hat badge, club name and badges of office must not be shown when appearing on television 1985: Ankle socks: white approved as optional over stockings Footlets: without pom poms approved for wear under stockings Cardigans or jackets: approved in plain knot or crochet plain rob, moss stitch, stocking stitch, small cable or pattern Cardigans or jackets: crochet must not be an open pattern or with holes 1986: Uniform: affiliated women members must play in uniform even when playing in mixed games with men in street clothes Bracelets: plain copper permitted Medical alert bracelets or necklets: permitted to be worn if the member had approval from Headquarters and was issued with a letter that must be carried to avoid any possible embarrassment. 1988: Knee high stockings: not permitted Earrings: Only fine white or yellow gold earrings were permitted with players reminded that white referred to white gold and did not mean white earrings. Travelling uniform: a uniform for the NSW team was approved consisting of a blue frock, junior navy blazer with State badge and a scarf in the same colours as the badge. Maternity frocks: Simplicity Pattern No 7341 was approved

7 1989: State Representatives Uniform: All members of the executive and committee would wear Junior navy blazers with NSWWBA hat band when travelling as representatives of the State with a distinctive pocket. These blazers were not to be worn for play. Retiring members could continue to wear the blazer, the pocket of which would show the year in which they held office. Delegates hat band: delegates may wear a District hat band when attending events with an official party. 1990: Blazers: navy or white approved and as such they may be worn whenever and wherever the wearer chooses Slack suits: optional with material and sketch of design sent to Head Office for approval Skirts and blouses: white, hemline not more than 38cm (15 ) from ground Overblouse: white, hip length, long or short sleeves not less than 10cm underarm Shirt/overblouse are not permitted to be tucked into shirt. A belt is not permitted to be worn on shirt or overblouse. Hats: can be removed in the clubhouse but must be worn when NSWWBA representatives are in attendance Hosiery and socks: optional Koolit collar: in pure white (not yellow) permitted 1997: Frock: White sports frock with long or short sleeves not less than 10cm underarm sleeve Maternity frock: white sports style, long or short sleeves, not less than 10cm underarm sleeve Culottes or skirt with overblouse: white culottes to have pleats centre back and centre front. Culottes or skirt to have elastic in back band (optional). Overblouse to be worn over culottes long or short sleeves not less than 10cm underarm sleeve. Culottes or skirt with overblouse to be of same non-transparent material. Slack suit: white with loose fitting wrist length jacket with 10cm side seam split, long or short sleeves no less than 10cm underarm seam. No blouse or jumper to be worn under jacket only white skivvy as permitted. Jacket not to be worn unbuttoned or removed. Jacket and slacks to be of the same non-transparent material. Length of frocks and culottes: not more than 38 cm from the ground Length of pants: Length of slacks and track suit pants to reach instep. Width at bottom to be not less than 40cm nor more than 60cm. Shorts: white tailored, knee length shorts with sports overblouse. Overblouse must be of the same non-transparent material as the shorts. Shorts: could not be worn at State Play-offs Winter uniform (optional): Junior navy track suit or skirt with tracksuit top with or without state monogram on left front. White blouse, jumper or skivvy to be worn under the tracksuit top. Tracksuit top may be worn unbuttoned or removed in the Club House, or on the green. Tracksuits: could not be worn at State Play-offs Headwear: White sports hat, closed crown (width of brim and dark green lining optional) or white eye shade, height at centre front 7.5cm (dark green lining optional) Headwear optional for twilight (4pm) or night bowls Headwear optional in the club house except on special days when there is representation from the Association and/or District when hats must be worn. Hat bands: white cotton/polyester with blue embroidered lettering on the slant. For eye shades half hat bands or club name embroidered directly on eyeshades. Hat badges: The Association badge must be worn at all times, pinned centre front of the hat or eye shade immediately above the band. The name of the member club must not be obscured. Club badge: may be worn on frock, jacket of slack suit, overblouse or track suit top on left hand side. Name bar and/or badge of office (with club name appended or on badge) may be worn on cardigan, blazer, jacket of slack suit, overblouse or tracksuit top, on left hand side. Badges: These can be worn in any order on the left hand side, but the RNSWBA Merit Pin must be worn at the bottom of all other badges. Friendship badges can only be worn when playing the club giving these. Only one badge can be worn on the left hand collar or lapel. Name badge can be worn centre front of uniform.

8 Blazer or Jackets: white or junior navy, with or without collar with State Monogram on top left pocket (optional) with name of club (optional) and/or Interstate (where authorized) under monogram, in either blue (with white blazer/jacket) or gold (with junior navy blazer/jacket). Cardigan: white (plain knit or plain crochet) or junior navy (plain machine knit) long sleeves or sleeveless with narrow gold and white strip inside bands. State monogram on left front. Skivvy: white, may be worn provided it does not come above the collar at the back of the neck. Petticoats: must be worn at all time under frock, skirt with overblouse, culottes with overblouse, skirt with track suit top. Petticoat to be white, full length and double fronted when worn under frock, skirt with overblouse, skirt with track suit top. Divided half petticoat to be worn under culottes with overblouse. Raincoats: white, navy or clear material Wind jackets: white, junior navy or clear material with State Monogram on left front (optional) with the name of the club (optional) and/or Interstate (where authorized) under monogram in either blue (with white jacket) and gold (with junior navy jacket). Footwear: shoes or sandals white with smooth flat shoes. Navy shoes and plain navy socks may be worn with navy winter uniform. Handbags or shoulder bags: white or junior navy Hosiery: optional. If worn, mini-beige shade. White ankle socks or white/beige sockettes may be worn (with shoes only) with or without stockings provided that the sockettes do not come above the shoes. Jewellery: any gold or silver earrings no larger than standard size sleepers, or any small stud earrings (e.g. pearl, diamond, or other small studs for pierced ears) or small clip-on earrings similar to the above are permitted. No more than one earring in each ear is permitted. Medical alert bracelets and necklaces: plain only are permitted Necklaces: one only plain fine white gold or yellow gold necklace is permitted Dress ornaments: other than above are not permitted Dusters: white Dusters: not to be attached to any part of the uniform Scarves and neckpieces: white if worn and must not come above the collar at the back of the neck. Gloves or mittens: white if worn Rain or breeze bonnets, hat ties: if worn white or clear. Uniform: as listed above must be worn on Club playing days, Club championships, Official days such as President s Days, Birthdays, etc, District and State Fixtures. Wearing of uniform or mufti at other times is optional. NSW Team in state representative uniform in : Uniforms: optional for office bearers and club members to wear uniforms at all meetings Badges: Affiliation hat badge, club name and badges of office must be removed when appearing on television 2000: Coloured overblouses: optional Coloured bowls: approved except for white or yellow Neat casual attire: allowed for use in all form of club organized social bowls in order to rectify declining membership

9 2003: Bowls Australia Logo: to be worn on uniforms from : State Championships playoffs: all players are to be similarly attired: white skirt, slacks, shorts, pedal pushers, culottes & white top or club shirt 2008: Umpires shirt: pink and navy, was made compulsory for all women umpires in NSW to wear while umpiring Coaching shirts: yellow with navy collar and trim around the sleeves 2009: Slacks: White / Junior Navy or Coloured - instep length. Shorts and Culottes: White / Junior Navy or Coloured, must be a minimum knee length. Pedal Pushers: White / Junior Navy or Coloured must be mid-calf length. Skirt: White / Junior Navy minimum knee length. Frocks: White only minimum knee length Sleeves: may be long, short or three- quarter length Petticoats or half-slips must be worn under frocks and skirts. Shirts: must have a collar Coloured garments are to be coordinated with club shirts and only as approved by the Association Garments must be of non-transparent material Headwear (optional) - White or coloured coordinated hats, eyeshade, cap or bucket hat (as approved by the Association) may be worn. Green lining and width of brim as approved. On special days when there is an invited Official representative from the Association and / or District, it is at the discretion of the Club President if headwear is to be worn Hatband: White cotton / polyester band with blue embroidered lettering. For eyeshades and caps half (1/2) hatband or club name directly onto the cap or shade Blazers: Junior navy with or without collar, with State monogram on top left pocket with name of club (optional) and or Interstate (where authorized) under the monogram in gold. Cardigans / Vests: Cardigans in white or Junior Navy plain knit. Junior navy long sleeve or sleeveless, with a narrow gold and white stripe inside bands. State monogram on left front. Vest in plain knit or fleece. White or Junior Navy or Coloured (coordinated with club shirt only as approved by the Association). Wind Jackets: White or Junior Navy or Coloured (to match club shirt and only as approved by the Association) with State Monogram on Left front (optional). Coloured / white shirts: Coloured / white shirts to be worn with culottes, skirts, shorts, slacks or pedal pushers. To be worn with waistband (not tucked in). May have a self-fabric band with splits up the side seam or a rib band (4 4.5cms) NOT hem only. Shirt to have collar and 3 4 buttons in front or zip of the same length. Members / teams of a club MUST all wear the same style, colour and design, if they have a club shirt. A skivvy must not be worn without an overblouse. Coloured club shirts must be approved by Association. Rainwear: White, Junior Navy or Clear material Footwear: as approved by NSW WBA Inc. Shoes predominately white or junior navy with smooth flat soles (non slip recommended). Navy shoes/ sandals may be worn with junior navy garments, but NOT to be worn with white uniform Hosiery: (optional) Tights or stockings, mini beige shade; socks, sockettes or anklets white; socks, sockettes or anklets navy with navy slacks only; and long socks only with slacks Handbags: White or junior navy Dusters: May be white or coloured Scarves / neckpieces / mittens: May be white or navy (Coolite collars) Wearing of Neat Casual Attire: Is not permitted for Club Championships, President s Days, District and State Fixtures. Special Days such as Carnivals etc. as set down by the Women s Club or Parent Body Jewellery to be worn with discretion

10 2008 to 2016: Variations on the 2008 uniform code were adopted over time. 2016: Garments: white, navy or coloured above and below waist garments as registered with the Association Shirts: Approved coloured shirts can be worn with white, navy or approved coloured below waist garments, as long as all players are wearing the same Uniforms: All team/side members to be dressed in the same uniform (excluding vests, jackets, shoes, headwear or compression garments) Composite teams competing in the State Carnival may wear their respective Club uniforms Logo: BA logo must be on uniform, for all state sanctioned events, on both upper & lower body attire Socks: white or colour coordinated with the BA logo on them Headwear: optional, however Women s Bowls NSW recommends that it be worn as protection from the sun Knee length apparel: skorts, shorts, skirts, culottes and dresses should be worn as close to the knee as possible Logos/Monograms: sponsor s, manufacturer s and club logos may be used on all garments Badges: should be worn with discretion Wind or wet weather jackets: white or navy or coordinated with your club uniform (as approved by the Association), all with BA logo affixed on replacement Undergarments (including compression) should be white or colour coordinated with the approved club uniform Women bowlers in State Uniform in 2016
