3 DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD (BRONZE) WHAT IS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD? WHY DO THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD? LEVELS You can do programmes at three levels, which when completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award. You need to be aged between 13 and 24. SECTIONS You achieve your Bronze Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections: Volunteering Physical Skills Expedition You'll find yourself helping people or the community, getting fitter, developing skills and going on an expedition. Your programme can be full of activities and projects and along the way you ll have new experiences, make friends and discover talents that will stay with you for the rest of your life. From the first day to the last, it s an adventure. Every section gives you a different challenge and you will learn to work independently. You ll enjoy new experiences, discover talents you never thought you had, push yourself and meet new people. Achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities. You'll be recognised for doing things you want to do (and may even be doing already). You ll make a difference to other people s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime. Doing your DofE really does give you the skills for life and work and are great for demonstrating skills on your Sixth Form and UCAS applications. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU COMPLETE A LEVEL OF THE AWARD (BRONZE)? Once you ve completed your programme, you need to make sure: You've done all of your sections for the minimum time required, for an average of an hour a week (or the required timescale for your expedition). You've uploaded all of your evidence to edofe - the best option for this is to photograph the signed pages in your Keeping Track booklet you will get when you register for the DofE award. You will need to ask your Assessor for each area to sign and give a brief report/comments on your activity, how you met your goals and how you have progressed. You will be responsible for adding them into edofe online. Your Leader at NBH will check and approve them in edofe. Once they've approved your final section they will then send it to your Licensed Organisation (LO) who will check everything is in order. For your Bronze and Silver Award you ll receive your certificate and badge which will be sent to your DofE leader at school. 3

5 DUKE OF EDINBURGH PROGRAMME STAFF & ASSESSMENT (BRONZE) NBH DofE Leader : Mr Dan Hall Head of Year 9 SECTION ASSESSMENT OF EACH SECTION Follow the link below for ideas and more information: INFORMATION How do I officially complete and record a Section? Your DofE Leader is not one of your Assessors. You will select your own Assessor at the start of each Section and must add their information to the planning form and ensure that your DofE Leader at NBH has a copy of that information. You will have needed to regularly uploaded your own notes and evidence onto your edofe profile and have given a chosen Assessor all of the information that they need to be able to sign off your achievements. You will choose a different Assessor for each Section. Who should I choose as an Assessor for each Section? An Assessor checks on your progress and agrees the completion of a section of your programme. They will produce or sign off the relevant Assessor s report for that Section, which is uploaded into edofe. An Assessor can be anyone who is interested in helping you to achieve, has some knowledge of the activity you are doing and can be available over the time you're doing it. From the local football club coach to a charity shop manager, to a teacher leading an Enrichment session at school, the conservation expert leading a residential week, just about anyone can be an Assessor for the Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Residential sections. However, they must be independent and therefore cannot be a member of your family. If you are struggling to find Assessors, talk to your Leader. The Assessor should have knowledge of the activity being undertaken and be aware of your objectives. They should be available at key stages throughout your experience to assess your contribution and development. Once a section is complete the Assessor will meet with you to discuss your performance, experiences and achievements. You will need to have given them the link: The Assessor will also decide whether you have met the DofE requirements that you've demonstrated effort, perseverance, improvement and made progress towards your section goals. This information, along with comments from the Assessor, should be recorded on the Assessor s report which can be submitted in two ways, these are: Online: at then follow the instructions. On paper: using the Assessor Cards or any other written submission that can be uploaded to edofe take a photo of the signed page of our Keeping Track Booklet using your phone and upload it to your edofe profile. In each case, Assessors will need to provide your name, edofe ID number (top left of each page when you're in edofe), DofE level and the section they have assessed. Photograph the relevant pages and upload the image and mark it as Assessor s Evidence. Mountainwise will be your Assessors for the Expedition Section and will complete all paperwork for the year group, including the Assessors Reports for all pupils. These will be sent to the school in August

Water and Water Bottles approx. 3 litres of water each per expedition but bring a water bottle to decant water into for when you are walking 13. Cutlery, cups and plates (tough plastic) 14. Matches 15. Toilet Paper and Anti-Bacterial Hand Cleaner Group Equipment (to be shared and carried across the group you will share this out when you arrive at camp as some of the equipment will be provided by Mountainwise e.g. tent, trangia stove etc.) 1. Maps, Compasses and Pens 2. Food the group should plan in advance and shop for food. Please do not bring food that would normally need to be refrigerated, including milk. See the DofE website for advice about food to take with you and you will receive guidance on the training day. Please bring a sandwich for the first day s lunch. 3. First Aid Kit 4. Washing Up Liquid/Scourers 5. Tent and Trangia Stove (Mountainwise provides) Please note that this is not a comprehensive list as equipment taken will depend on various factors such as the weather, length of expedition etc. You may bring your mobile phone so that you can use it on the coach but phones will be collected in by Mountainwise once you arrive. On the way home, your phone will be returned for you for the coach journey and so you can call your parents to let them know the anticipated arrival time. It is extremely important to take only essential items of equipment. The more equipment you bring, the more you carry. 12
13 Packing Once you have decided what equipment you will be taking, it must be suitably packed in your rucksack. Your rucksack should firstly be lined with a bin liner in order to keep your equipment dry. Everything inside should then be stored in plastic bags (labelling the bags may also save you having to open them all in order to find one thing). Items needed during the journey or immediately on reaching the campsite (e.g. first aid kit, snacks etc.) should be carried on top or in side pockets. Heavy articles should be kept as high as possible. Balance the weight and avoid sharp edges and corners against your back. Remember also to keep your spare clothes and sleeping bag dry. When wearing your rucksack, ensure that it is correctly adjusted and comfortable before you start walking. Carry the load high and close to your back, tighten should straps and the waist belt so that some of the load is carried on your hips. You should not have items dangling or projecting from your rucksack. If you have room in your rucksack after packing all the essential items, do not fill it with unnecessary extra items just for the sake of it. Planning What You Take you have the guidelines, it is your responsibility. It is your group s responsibility to meet well in advance of the expeditions to plan what you will take and what you will need to shop for. The Group Leader in your team will need to arrange ways for everyone to meet and then be able to communicate about this. Mistakes that groups often make which Mountainwise comment on are: Groups not communicating and agreeing what they will bring. One member of the group not having a big enough rucksack so others have to carry more. One member of the group not bringing equipment e.g. plastic cutlery, their own first aid kit or wearing the wrong clothes. Groups bringing food that would need refrigerating e.g. milk, sandwiches with meat/fish fillings or sushi! Not bringing enough bottled water. You can leave this at the base camp and fill up a smaller bottle to take when you walk, but pack enough to stay hydrated. 13
