1 SONG IDEAS FOR THE CLASSROOM There is a common perception that all learning should be serious and solemn in nature, and that if one is having fun and there is hilarity and laughter, then it is not really learning. This is a misconception. It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself at the same time. One of the best ways of doing this is through singing songs.' There are many advantages of using songs in the classroom: 1. Singing songs are a welcome break from the usual routine of the language class. 2. They are motivating and challenging. 3. Learning a language requires a great deal of effort. Singing a song can help students to make and sustain the effort of learning. 4. Songs provide language practice in the various skills- speaking, listening and reading. 5. They encourage students to interact and communicate. 6. They create a meaningful context for language use.' 1. Hokey Pokey Song Vocabulary and pronounciation As much as you like Sing this song standing in a circle. When you say a body part, you must put that body part into the circle and then take it out of the circle. Clap your hands two times with the students Clap your hands two times with the students You can make many differentiation s with CLAP YOUR HANDS, like STAMP YOUR FEET MOVE YOUR ARMS SHAKE YOUR HEAD TURN AROUND JUMP JUMP JUMP! Song and concentration game Then form a circle with the students Action The children start to sing the song. The children touch each others hands in the following way: The right hand is on top of the left hand of their RIGHT neighbor The left hand is under the right hand of their LEFT neighbor When they sing the song, they hit the RIGHT hand of their LEFT neighbor with their own RIGHT hand. The hand clapping will go round the circle. When you sing the last DONG of the song, you have to touch the hand of your neighbor, but that person will try to take his hand away. If the person s hand is touched he has to go inside the circle and start playing the game with the other people who get touched on DONG forming a new circle. Itsy Bitsy Spider Practice pronounciation A spider A spout Rain Sun Etc. Practice the gestures for spider, rain, sun, etc Itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout Down came the rain and washed the spider out Out came the sun and dried up all the rain Itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again your hands climb up in the air make rain gestures make sun gesture your hand climb up in the air 7. Alphabet Song combined with musical chairs Practice pronunciation and numbers, do action Up to 10 Write down the text of the song on the blackboard Practice the singing first Arrange chairs in a circle. There should be one less chair than the number of students. For example, if there are 10 students, there should be 9 chairs. Sing the alphabet song as students walk around the chairs. Stop singing the song at any point. When you stop singing the students must race to find a seat. Whoever cannot find a seat must sit in the middle.
