Melissa Watson (mwatson@cfcc.edu) ( ) CFCC General Education Competencies Will Incorporate All or Some of the Following: Written Communication Oral Communication Critical Thinking Basic Computer Usage Understanding Social Structure Understanding Scientific Concepts and Applications COURSE DESCRIPTION The course introduces the role of IT in managing business processes and the need for business process and IT alignment. Emphasis is placed on industry need for understanding business challenges and developing/managing information systems to contribute to the decision making process based on these challenges. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the hybrid business manager and the potential offered by new technology and systems. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in natural science/mathematics (Quantitative Option). PREREQUISITES: None Course Objectives This course introduces students to the techniques and tools of management information systems. Information systems and the strategies for managing them change quickly. Coverage is given to the latest information technologies, practices, and trends. The text uses real-world examples and case studies, providing skills and knowledge that are easily transferable to the business world. You are expected to complete your work on time by the due dates. You have plenty of time to complete all the work for each module. LAB RULES- When on campus: No food or drinks in the labs at any time. Cell phones - OFF or vibrate Absolutely NO text messaging Acceptable use of the computers in the labs, including access to the Internet and electronic mail as delineated in the CFCC Catalog and Student handbook. ACADEMIC HONESTY CFCC requires of students complete academic honesty in the completion of all assigned work. The discipline policy for academic dishonesty (cheating) can be found in the CFCC Catalog & Student Handbook. I have a zero tolerance policy for cheating in this online course. If, at any time, you submit someone else's coursework as your own, you will receive a grade of F in the course. Likewise, if you allow another student to submit your work as his or her own, you will receive a grade of F in the course. Please refer to the cheating policy for Cape Fear Community College as it is explained in your College Catalog/Student Handbook. STUDENT ACCOUNTS mycfcc is your student web portal - there you can access your class websites, , and WebAdvisor (official academic info such as grades, transcripts, schedules, etc). Your official CFCC-provided account is to be
3 used for all correspondence with your instructors and CFCC staff. Some information from CFCC will ONLY be ed to this address, and not sent through postal mail, so it is very important that you check this account. To access this account, visit the mycfcc portal - there is a link to the portal near the top of the CFCC.edu website. Login and click the link. Your username is part of your address: user@mail.cfcc.edu. (Note if you've had a CFCC address in the past, this one differs because we've changed ' ' to 'mail' in the address.) This account is provided to you as long as you are enrolled in classes (you can take the summer off), and may be used for personal as well as academic . STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS If you are a person with a disability and anticipate needing accommodations of any type in order to participate in this class, you must notify Disability Support Services (room U-218 (Union Station), or ), provide necessary documentation of the disability, and arrange for the appropriate authorized accommodations. Once these accommodations are approved, please identify yourself so we can implement these accommodations. All discussions regarding your disability will remain confidential. Students are required to provide a copy of the Accommodation Letter from Disability Support Services as soon as possible, preferably by the end of the first week of classes. You should then meet with me to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of the Accommodation Letter. Course handouts will be available in an alternate format through Disability Support Services if needed. Distance Learning Entry, Attendance and Withdrawal Procedures for Internet Courses Class Entry Distance Learning (DL) courses may be audited at any time; therefore, instructors must have documentation of participation by students. The first day of classes at CFCC is considered the first day of classes for all DL courses (hybrid and Internet). Students must complete the Enrollment Verification activity before the end of the 10% Census Date. The Census Date is used by the state to calculate FTE (full-time equivalent) to determine funding for the College; therefore, it is critical that instructors note attendance during the first 10% of the course. Is the same for all DL mini or full-session courses and corresponds to the 10% date based on first day of classes. Students must login and complete the Enrollment Verification by the end of the 10% Census Date in order to be counted toward FTE. For Internet courses, the E (Entry) date corresponds to the date that students complete the Enrollment Verification. A student is considered a NO SHOW (NS) if he/she has not completed an Enrollment Verification by the Census Date. Please make every effort to login to the course site before the end of the Census Date. Attendance After the Census Date, Internet course attendance is based on whether students miss 20% of their total course work. That is the equivalent of 20% of their total grade for the course. Missing 20% of their course work is equivalent to missing 20% of attendance in face-to-face courses which results in a grade of F. Withdrawal Withdrawal procedures for online students follow the same guidelines as traditional courses. For Internet students who are truly distant (not in the area), you may contact the instructor by to coordinate the withdrawal procedure. Students who have withdrawn will automatically be blocked from the online course.
4 Absences Due To Religious Observances Students will be allowed two days of excused absence each academic year for religious observances required by the faith of the student. These excused absences will be included in the twenty (20%) percent of allowable clock hour absences. Students are required to provide written notice of the request for an excused absence by completing the Religious Observance Absence form available in Student Development. The completed form must be submitted to the Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee a minimum of ten (10) school days prior to the religious observance. The Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee will notify the instructor within three (3) school days of receiving the request. Students will be given the opportunity to make up any tests or other work missed due to the excused absence and should work with their instructors in advance of the excused absence to delineate how to make up the missed coursework (N.C.G.S. 115D-5). When on campus. TOBACCO USE POLICY Tobacco use is prohibited on all CFCC property, except in the designated area at the North Campus. If a student is found using tobacco products outside of the designated area, the first offense is a warning and the second offense may result in disciplinary action. NO CHILDREN ON CAMPUS Children cannot be taken into classrooms, laboratories or shops unless authorized by College personnel. Children cannot be left unattended on campus including the Learning Resource Center, the cafeteria, lounge areas, registrations sites, administrative offices or parking lots. Failure to comply with this policy will lead to disciplinary action.
