Services for Outpatients (not staying in hospital) HIGH-RISK ANTENATAL UNIT This service is for women who need special care during their pregnancy. Your doctor or midwife will refer you to this service if you or your baby need it. Our nurses and medical staff provide: counselling before you get pregnant (for example, genetic counselling) consultation and diagnosis of problems on-going assessment of mother and baby during the pregnancy ULTRASOUND SERVICES Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to make a picture of your uterus and your baby. Your doctor or midwife will refer you for an ultrasound if you need one. 4

Ultrasound doesn't hurt you or your baby. It is used to: confirm your pregnancy estimate your due date check the health and growth of your baby Both campuses of The Ottawa Hospital have excellent ultrasound units. They are used for examinations during pregnancy and for gynecological problems. ANTENATAL HOME CARE PROGRAM Some women who have problems during their pregnancy are told they should stay in the hospital. However, this can cause a lot of stress for a family. The Ottawa Hospital Antenatal Home Care program allows some women to stay at home instead of going to hospital. The services you need come to you. Staying at home is usually better for the mother and the family. Your doctor will refer you to this program if you need it. 5

Professional Services in the Hospital OBSTETRICIANS An obstetrician is the specialized doctor who looks after you during your pregnancy, labour and birth. There is always an obstetrician in the hospital. Obstetricians take turns being on-call (available) to assist with birthing babies. They also deal with any obstetrical emergencies. Some family doctors give obstetrical care and may have on-call arrangements. Your doctor will talk to you about the services she/he offers. Because obstetricians take turns being on-call, it is possible that your doctor may not be there for your baby's birth. We cannot guarantee the gender, race or religion of the doctors or nurses who will take care of you during your labour, birth and hospital stay. If you don't know the doctor who is with you for your labour and birth, tell her/him about any special conditions you and your doctor agreed upon. Your doctor will give you a Family Birth Preference Form. Talk to your doctor about what you want before you complete this form. The form lets you write down what you want so that it is clear for any doctor or nurse who will be involved in the birth of your child. Be sure you bring this form to the hospital with you and give it to the birthing unit nurse. ANESTHESIOLOGISTS An anesthesiologist is a doctor who specializes in pain relief. There is always an anesthesiologist in the hospital. 6

The anesthesiologist can give pain relief during your labour. There are many types of pain relief you can have. Some types use medication and some types do not. If you attend prenatal classes you can find out about different types of pain relief. You can also ask your doctor to give you an information booklet from the hospital about pain relief. Please remember that the anesthesiologist is also responsible for helping in other areas of the hospital. If there is an emergency somewhere else in the hospital, the anesthesiologist may not be able to come to you right away when you ask for pain relief. Please be patient she/he will come as soon as possible. A DOCTOR FOR YOUR BABY We recommend that you choose a doctor for your baby before the baby is born. This could be your family doctor or a pediatrician (a doctor who specializes in caring for children). If you have chosen a midwife, then she will take care of your baby. If your family doctor or pediatrician sees patients at The Ottawa Hospital, she/he should see your baby before you go home. If your doctor doesn't see patients at The Ottawa Hospital, one of the hospital doctors will take care of your baby until you go home. If your baby has any problems, a neonatologist may see your baby. A neonatologist is a doctor who has special training in taking care of sick babies. There is always a neonatologist or pediatrician available for the Birthing Units, the Rich Little Special Care Nursery (Civic Campus) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (General Campus). 7

NURSING SERVICES Nurses at The Ottawa Hospital Birthing Units and Mother Baby Units have special training so they can take excellent care of you and your family. A nurse will be there to support you during your labour and the birth of your baby. The support she provides will help you have a better birth experience. If you think you are in labour, or if you have questions or concerns about your pregnancy, phone the Obstetrical Assessment Unit (Triage) listed on your enclosed telephone number card. Nurses are available 24 hours a day to answer your questions. MIDWIVES Some women choose to have a midwife to help with their child's birth. Midwives are specialists in normal childbirth. They provide 24-hour care from early in your pregnancy, through labour, birth and for the first 6 weeks after birth. Midwives work with members of the health care team at The Ottawa Hospital but they are independent, not members of staff. 8

If you want to have your baby at the hospital, your midwife will take care of you. Your midwife will consult the on-call obstetrician if necessary. If there is any concern about you and your baby, the obstetrician and the birthing unit nurses may take over your care. Your midwife will stay with you and support you. Talk to your midwife about how and where you want to have your baby. PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES Many pregnant women and their partners feel unsure and anxious at times during the pregnancy. Talking with each other or with family and friends can make you feel better. Sometimes it is hard to talk to your family and friends. You might feel better if you talk to a professional about your feelings. If you would like to talk with a professional, ask your doctor or midwife. They can refer you to someone who can help. SOCIAL WORK SERVICES Many people have concerns related to pregnancy and the birth of a baby. You may have questions on your mind such as: How to cope with being pregnant How your life will change after your baby is born Medical situations involving you and/or your baby Alcohol or drug use or other dependency problems Mental health concerns Previous miscarriages or other recent losses Safety in your home Adoption arrangements Problems you might have if you are new to Canada 9

Other problems which are upsetting you or making your life stressful Our social workers can help. They can talk with you about your concerns. They can help you plan ways to deal with them. They can provide support if you lose your pregnancy or your baby. The Ottawa Hospital offers: individual and family counselling information on community resources referrals to other health care professionals SPIRITUAL CARE The Ottawa Hospital's Spiritual Care Team knows that having a baby is an important event. You may use our services for spiritual care no matter what religion you are. We also give spiritual help to people who don't belong to a religion. Our spiritual care includes: Planning an official naming ceremony Helping you understand your new experience Helping you understand and deal with your feelings Helping family members talk about their concerns Supporting you as you start your life as a new family Helping you make decisions Talking about cultural and faith concerns Referring you to community resources that offer spiritual care Supporting families who have a pregnancy loss The Ottawa Hospital supports ceremonial and religious customs to celebrate the birth of your baby. Some birthing rooms are suitable for ceremonies. Please talk to your doctor/midwife, your spiritual or faith leader and our Spiritual Care Department in advance if you would like a special ceremony. 10

FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES The Ottawa Hospital uses Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating to plan the daily meals. If you need or want a special diet, please be sure to tell the nurse when you are admitted. The Food and Nutrition Services Department can provide diets for food allergies or cultural preferences (such as Kosher, Inuit, vegetarian, etc.). The nurses will arrange for you to meet with a staff member to discuss your food needs. Each nursing unit has a pantry and galley where you can find juice, milk, tea, coffee, bread and ice for patients. There is also a refrigerator and a microwave if you want to bring food from home. Please label all containers with your name and room number. EDUCATION AND RESEARCH The Ottawa Hospital is a large teaching hospital. It is linked with many educational institutions, including the University of Ottawa, Algonquin College, Heritage College and La Cité Collégiale. You may meet students from nursing, social work, spiritual care and other areas working here. They are all supervised by fully qualified Ottawa Hospital staff. Medical students, residents and fellows often work with the doctors and nurses. They might help take care of you or your baby. A resident is a medical doctor who is training to become a specialist in a certain area of medicine. A resident in obstetrics, pediatrics, anaesthesia or other types of medicine may help take care of you and your baby. A fellow is a medical doctor who is studying in a very specialized area of medicine. A fellow from 11

maternal-fetal medicine or neonatal-perinatal medicine may also take care of you or your baby. The Ottawa Hospital has many research projects related to pregnancy, birth and the period right after birth (post-partum). Research projects help to increase our knowledge about these important areas of medicine. You might be asked to take part in one of our research projects. You may take part if you want to but you do not have to participate. When You Come to the Hospital ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION Pre-Registration Information You will get Pre-Admission forms from your doctor or midwife. Fill them in and mail them or drop them off at the Admitting Department of the hospital. If we have this information in advance, it makes it easier when you come in to have your baby. If you attend the hospital s orientation night, you may be able to fill in your pre-admission forms after the orientation night ends. Registration Information When you arrive to have your baby, you will finish your registration. Bring your valid Ontario Health Insurance Card and information on any other health insurance you have. Information about Your Baby's Birth and Care BIRTHING UNITS At the Civic Campus the Birthing Unit is on the 4th floor. At the General Campus the Birthing Unit is on the 8th floor. Our birthing rooms are large, home-like and comfortable. You will have your own room so it is private and relaxing. We use all of the best equipment and technology to care for you and your baby during labour. 15

Each room has its own washroom, with a shower. Some rooms have jacuzzi tubs. All rooms have recliner chairs so your partner or support person can relax. Most families will stay in the same room for labour, birth and a short period of time after the birth. Your partner and/or support person may stay with you throughout labour and birth. If you need a caesarean birth, you may have someone stay with you, if your doctor and anesthesiologist agree. The Birthing Unit is set up to handle caesarean births or complicated births. SHARING THE NEWS Please ask your family and friends not to call the hospital while you are in labour. Ask them to wait for a call from your support person to tell them the news. CAMERA USE Many families take pictures or videos of their baby's birth. Please talk to your nurse and doctor if you want to use a camera. You are welcome to take pictures as long as it does not interfere with the staff taking care of the mother and baby. If taking pictures makes it hard for the staff to do their jobs, they may ask you to stop. If you want a picture of the nurses or the doctor, please ask them BEFORE you take the pictures. If you are going to put your pictures on a website, please make sure that the nurses and doctors are willing to have their pictures included. A Hint: If you use fast film (ASA 400 & 1000) you won't need a flash. 16

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE BABY ARRIVES? You will stay with your baby in the Birthing Unit for about 2 hours after the birth. This is a great time for you to get to know your baby and to breastfeed him or her for the first time. The mother and baby will get matching identification bands. The mother will choose one other person to also wear a matching identification band. Every baby is given a number of tests and treatments. These procedures are described below: The nurses will put erythromycin ointment in your baby's eyes after birth. This ointment prevents infection. This is a legal requirement in the province of Ontario. Your baby will also get an injection of Vitamin K. Vitamin K helps your baby's blood clot well. We take a small sample of blood from all new babies. This is done by a small needle-prick on the baby's heel. The blood is tested for two diseases called Phenylketonuria (P.K.U.), and Hypothyroidism. We need to find these diseases early so babies don't have serious problems later. We test all new babies for 17

these diseases before they are discharged from the hospital. Newborn infants who are discharged from the hospital before they are 24 hours old should be retested within five days after discharge. We will give you instructions for retesting. We check every baby's hearing before they are discharged from the hospital. If you want more information about these tests, ask the doctors or nurses. It is important for you to understand why the tests are done. It is also important to make sure all the tests are done before you leave the hospital. MOTHER BABY UNITS After about 2 hours in the Birthing Unit, you and the baby will be transferred to a Mother Baby Unit. The Mother Baby Units are on the same floors as the Birthing Units. Your room may have one, two, three or four beds. Your room will depend on your 18

insurance coverage and what beds are available after you have your baby. The Mother Baby Unit is set up so that you can learn how to care for your baby. You will have your baby with you 24 hours a day. Although your baby is with you all the time, this does not mean that you are left alone to take care of the baby. The nurses will support you and your family through all the new experiences of the first days together. The nurses will answer your questions, give you information and show you how to care for your baby. They will help you feel confident about going home with your new baby. Research shows that it is good for mothers and babies to stay together because: Babies cry less Babies are less stressed Babies and mothers sleep better Mothers and babies learn to breastfeed better Breast milk is produced earlier Babies are fed as soon as they show signs that they're hungry Women breastfeed longer and are more successful with breastfeeding Babies gain weight faster Women feel more confident about taking care of their baby It strengthens the bond between the parents and the baby Your nurse will look after you and your baby together. Each nurse looks after several families on the Mother Baby Unit at the same time. If your baby needs special care that the nurses can't give in your room, they will move your baby to an observation area. When your baby is ready, he or she will return to your room. 19

NURSERIES FOR BABIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS The Ottawa Hospital has a special nursery at each campus to look after babies who need extra care. The Rich Little Special Care Nursery is at the Civic Campus and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is at the General Campus. Some premature babies are admitted to the special nursery. Full term babies may be admitted if they have breathing difficulties, infections or low birth weight. The doctors and nurses in the special nursery have special training for dealing with newborns. They will take excellent care of your baby. The staff includes a neonatologist or a pediatrician, neonatal nurses and others. You will be able to be involved in your baby's care as much as possible. 20

FEEDING YOUR BABY We strongly encourage you to breastfeed your baby. We have many resources to help you learn how to do it well. All of our nurses have special training in breastfeeding. They can help you with positioning your baby so that she/he can feed well. Your nurse, doctor or midwife can also refer you to a certified lactation consultant (a person who gives support to breastfeeding mothers). Lactation consultants are available in the hospital. They can also help you for the first six weeks after your baby is born at the outpatient breastfeeding clinics offered by the hospital. If you decide to use bottles and formula to feed your baby, we will support your choice. Talk to your doctor or midwife about what type of formula to use. GETTING YOUR FAMILY INVOLVED We encourage fathers, partners and support persons to spend lots of time with the new baby. Your nurse can give suggestions on things they can do to help. 21

CIRCUMCISION There are no medical benefits for your baby to be circumcised. Please talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of this procedure before you come to the hospital. That way you can make an informed choice about circumcision. If you want to have your baby circumcised, talk with your doctor. Please note that circumcision is NOT covered by health insurance. You will have to pay the costs for the procedure. SAFETY AND SECURITY We want to keep your baby safe in the hospital. So we have set up some rules to protect your baby. Your nurse will explain our safety practices when you are admitted to the Mother Baby Unit. We will give you, your baby and your partner or support person matching identification bands. All of you must wear the identification bands while you are at the hospital. All staff members who take care of you and your baby should be wearing an Ottawa Hospital photo ID tag. Please ask them to show you their identification if you aren't sure what their job is. REMEMBER NEVER give your baby to anyone you don't know. NEVER leave your baby alone. LEARNING MORE ABOUT BABY CARE We have lots of resource material for you and your family (videos, handouts, and demonstrations). The 24-hour Parent Channel on the TV may also be helpful. Think about what you want to learn while you are in the hospital. Ask lots of questions! The nurses and doctors are here to help you learn. 22

BABY PICTURES Photography services are available if you would like to have baby's picture taken. Information for Visitors IMPORTANT Visitors should not bring latex balloons into the hospital. Many people are allergic to latex. Visitors should not wear perfume or cologne in the hospital. A scent-free environment helps patients feel better. All visitors must wash their hands before touching or holding the baby. FAMILY VISITORS We know how exciting it is to have a new baby. We encourage visits by brothers, sisters, grandparents and close family members. Please read the guidelines below for important information about visiting hours and restrictions. A NEW MOTHER NEEDS TIME FOR HERSELF Remember that the new mother is recovering from giving birth and learning to take care of her new baby. Make sure she has time to rest and enjoy her baby. Consider visiting the new family when they get home instead of in the hospital. Some mothers ask the nurse to limit their visitors. Please be understanding. 23

GUIDELINES FOR VISITORS Visit the hospitals web site at to find out about visiting hours or talk to your care provider. Your partner is welcome at any time. While in the Birthing Unit, your partner and two other people may stay with you. Private rooms are set up so that partners can stay with the mother 24 hours per day. In the Mother Baby Unit you can have a maximum of 2 visitors at any given time. This does not include the partner. Please keep the visits short. Visitors should leave after about 20 minutes. Children under 12 years old are not allowed to visit (except for brothers or sisters of the baby) Children who are visiting should stay in the mother's hospital room. They may also go to the lounge area if they are supervised. The new mother should NOT be the supervisor. PLEASE DO NOT VISIT IF: you have a cold, fever, rash, vomiting or diarrhea you have been around anyone with a disease such as measles, mumps or other communicable disease you have been exposed to chicken pox in the past days 24

Getting Ready to Go Home LENGTH OF STAY Most women go home about 2 days (48 hours) after a vaginal birth and 3 days after a caesarean birth. It depends on how well you recover from the birth. Sometimes women take longer to recover, so they might be in the hospital longer. Some women can leave earlier. We have an area where you may wait for your family, if they can't come to get you right after you have been discharged. IF YOUR BABY STAYS IN THE HOSPITAL If your baby needs to stay in the hospital after you go home, sometimes you may be able to stay over night. Staying at the hospital will allow you to breastfeed your baby, take care of him or her, and develop a strong bond. Talk to the nurses about taking part in your baby's care. INFANT CAR SEATS You MUST use a CSA approved infant car seat for your baby when you take her/him home. It is the law. Make sure that you learn how to put the car seat into your car safely. Ask your doctor or prenatal instructor for information about putting the car seat in your car the right way. 25

BIRTH REGISTRATION You will get these forms before you go home with your baby: Canada Child Tax Benefit form Birth Registration application Ontario Health Coverage Infant Registration Please complete the Ontario Health Coverage Registration (health card application) and give it to your nurse before you go home. The hospital will send it for you. Please complete the other forms and send them to the proper place as soon as possible. You will find information on where to send them on each of the forms. The hospital does not provide a Proof of Birth form. If you need one after you go home, you can get one from City Hall, or from the hospital's Health Records Department. HEALTHY BABIES/HEALTHY CHILDREN PROGRAM The Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program is operated by the City of Ottawa. It provides information and support for parents. If you agree, the hospital will let the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program know about your new baby. You will receive an information package about the program. A nurse from the Program will call you about 2 days after you go home. The nurse will visit you at home if you want. Ask the nurse any questions about: feeding your baby taking care of yourself safety for your baby community programs for parents and children. 26

Two helpful services are the Parent Child Info Line and Well Baby Drop-In Centres. The Parent Child Info Line is a telephone service that can answer your questions. The Drop-In Centres are held in a number of places in Ottawa. They give you a chance: to meet with a nurse to get help breastfeeding to ask questions to have your baby weighed OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICES We will give you a list of phone numbers for community services when you go home from the hospital. Helpful Things to Know about The Ottawa Hospital BANKING Each campus of the hospital has banking machines (ATMs). They accept Interac, Plus, and Visa. You can pay to have your own telephone and television in the Mother Baby Unit. There are also pay phones on every unit. You may NOT use cell phones in the hospital. They should be turned OFF upon entering the building. 27
