2 How to get to the Birthing Unit Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby. The following presentation will help guide you from any of the entrances to the 4 th floor Birthing Unit. When you arrive at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, park in the Visitor Parking lot (north side of building facing Georgian Drive) you can also get dropped off either at the Main Entrance, Atrium Entrance or the Emergency Entrance after hours. If you require a wheelchair, they are available at all entrances. If you arrive at RVH between 7 a.m. 9 p.m. use either the Main or Atrium Entrance. After 9 p.m., until 6 a.m., use the Emergency Entrance.

14 Inside the Birthing Unit If you are admitted, you will be taken to a Birthing Room. There are 8 private labour rooms equipped with a birthing bed, fetal monitor and infant care system as well as private shower and toilet. Birthing Room

17 Inside the Birthing Unit A small nourishment room on the floor is for patient use only You can store food and drinks in the refrigerator please label everything* *RVH cannot accept responsibility for lost or stolen goods Nourishment Room

18 Inside the birthing unit The safety of you and your baby is our top priority. If you require a caesarean section, the Birthing Unit is equipped with an Operating Room Delivery & Operating Room

19 Inside the birthing unit After delivery, your baby will be examined by a nurse and a physician and in most cases, placed skin to skin with birthing mother or father. Up to 2 hours after delivery, you and your baby will be transferred to a bed in the 16-bed maternity unit. After Delivery

20 After the birth of your baby Private rooms need to be requested in advance and are available on first come/first served basis. Each private room is equipped with a bathroom and shower. One support person can stay the night with you in the private room. Maternity Private Room

21 Maternity Unit One guest is permitted in semi-private room overnight Bathrooms, with sink and toilet are for patient use only. There are showers on the unit for patient use only On the unit: 2 private rooms 1 ward room (4 beds) 5 semi-private Semi-Private Room

22 Visiting Hours Visiting hours are 2 p.m. 8 p.m. 2 guests maximum at a time (no one under the age of 12 please, unless they are a sibling of baby) Support people may visit 24 hours a day Maternity Nursing Station

24 Inside the Birthing Unit In the event your baby needs some extra care, he or she will be transferred to the Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care unit Parents have access 24 hours a day Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

25 What to bring Personal focal point (optional) Extra pillows/breast feeding pillow with colored cases (optional) Personal phone list/pen/pencil/paper Long distance calling card (optional) Music/camera (optional) Lip balm Toothbrush and paste Soap/body wash Shampoo Deodorant Lotion Tissues Brush/comb Sanitary pads (large, absorbent) Night gown/housecoat Nursing bra and breast pads if breastfeeding, firm fitting bra if not breastfeeding Extra underwear (large comfortable) Slippers and warm socks Large reusable cup for ice water (optional) Snack/food for self and partner (popsicles, sour lollipops, favorite juice) Three meals are provided and delivered to the patient Variety of food venders available, some 24hrs., as well as vending machines Change for vending machines, credit card/debit card for parking and TV/phone/internet service (optional) FOR PARTNER: pajamas, sleeping bag/blanket, pillow, fold up camping/lounge chair to sleep on, personal toiletries FOR BABY: diapers, wipes, sleepers, bonnet, going home outfit ( could include undershirt, socks, mittens, sweater, blanket), car seat AVOID bringing valuables (jewelry, watches) and Latex balloons or products Please bring enough for entire length of stay. If your stay is extended, please have family bring additional supplies or they are available for purchase at Victoria s Gift Shop or Purehealth Pharmacy.
