1 Lesson Plan Course Title: Web Technologies Lesson Duration: 2 hours Session Title: Copyright Compliance Performance Objective: Upon completion of the lesson, students will show understanding of copyright rules and guidelines related to website design projects. Specific Objectives: Students will show understanding which works are subject to copyright protection. Students will understand the Fair Use Guidelines and how to use copyright protected works within the classroom environment. Students will understand public domain and how to determine which works fall into the public domain. Preparation TEKS Correlations: 1H Demonstrate an understanding of legal and ethical responsibilities in relation to the field of information technology. 4 The student complies with practices and behaviors that meet legal and ethical responsibilities. The student is expected to: o 4A - Examine copyright and licensing issues in the software industry. o 4B - Model ethical and legal acquisition of digital information, including the correct citing of sources through the use of established methods; and o 4C Demonstrate proper netiquette and acceptable use policies when using networks. 2 Equipment Needed: Computer with Digital Projector Computers with Internet Access for each student Introduction Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): 1. Ask the students whether or not they think about downloading music online without paying? Then ask whether they think it is ok to use a picture the found on a website. Discuss with them how the creator of the music or photo might feel if they found someone else was using their work without their permission. 2. Discuss with students how they would feel if they produced a set of photos to sell online, and the sale of these photos contributed to their income. Ask them to consider whether there should be protection of their photos so that people cannot use their photos without their permission. Copyright Quiz Application Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Following the lesson, the students should complete the Copyright or worksheet. Students should first attempt the worksheet on their own and then the instructor should go through the worksheet discussing each described work and explaining why it is in copyright protected or in public domain. Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Students should be provided with the Citing Sources worksheet. Students should go online and locate the information requested. The students should locate the information online and properly cite it. Summary Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): Have a student come to the front of the room and write on the board the proper citation for a web page, image, audio, and video they found online. Discuss the format of the citation and make any necessary corrections. 3

4 Evaluation Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): As students are working on the Copyright or exercise, observe to make sure students understand what is subject to copyright protection and what falls into the. When students are writing the citations on the board, observe for correct format and have them make any necessary corrections. Review this section if necessary. Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): Students should complete the quiz to assure their understanding of copyright guidelines. Extension Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Students should use what they learned in this lesson when they complete web design projects. The Web Design projects should include properly cited works. Perhaps even include a Works Cited page on the site. 4
