1 Bridging Health and Education Indiana School Nurse Conference November 6 and 7, 2014 Indianapolis Marriott North A Joint Presentation of the Indiana Association of School Nurses and Indiana University School of Nursing Center for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning
2 Target Audience Registered nurses practicing as school nurses from across the state of Indiana who are interested in learning, being challenged professionally, and networking with other professionals will benefit from this conference. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from the successes of others, develop a professional peer network, learn best practices in school nursing, enhance clinical skills and leave with a renewed enthusiasm to promote school health and school nursing excellence. Public health nurses, nursing students, and others with a connection to school nursing may also have interest in and participate in this conference. Conference Objectives After participation in this activity, learners will be able to: Describe national efforts toward management of chronic health conditions in the pediatric population Perform basic triage skills using the JumpSTART method of triage during a mass casualty incident Identify and address early signs of suicide and other mental health concerns in the school setting Apply HIPAA and FERPA requirements in the school health setting Complete and interpret individualized education plans, individualized health plans and 504 plans Describe the most up-to-date immunization guidelines for schools Discuss collection and use of NASN data for use in the school setting Continuing Education Contact hours will be provided by the Indiana University School of Nursing Center for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning. Contact hours are pending calculation. Contact hours will be provided separately for each day, however a participant must attend the entire day in order to receive credit for that day. Separate online evaluations will be available for both days of the conference. Upon completion of the evaluation(s), participants will be issued continuing education credit. The Indiana University School of Nursing Center for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission of Accreditation. 5 Wayne Giles, MD, MS SPEAKERS Dr. Giles joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in July He is currently the Director of the Division of Population Health within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Giles currently directs research and programmatic activities in a number of areas including arthritis, aging, alcohol, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, prevention research, school health and epilepsy. He has over 150 publications in peer reviewed journals and has authored several book chapters. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s Charles C. Shepard Award in Assessment and Epidemiology and the Jeffrey P. Koplan Award. Martha Dewey Bergren, DNS, RN, APHN-BC, FNASN, FAAN Martha is currently Lead Faculty for the Johnson and Johnson School Nurse Leadership Program and on the nursing faculty of the University of Illinois-Chicago. She was Director of Research at the National Association of School Nurses , now working on special projects for NASN. Martha has a Doctorate in Nursing Science, is a nationally certified school nurse and is a fellow in NASN and ASHA. Most importantly, she has been a school nurse in four states. Anne Edwards, NREMT-P Crisis and Continuity Advisor Anne is a Crisis and Continuity Advisor at the MESH Coalition. She was the 2011 National Paramedic of the Year and is the recipient of the Hoosier Hero award from the Indiana Pacers Organization. Anne has served the Indianapolis community for 10 years as an EMT. She also coordinates the mobile field hospital facilities (MASTF) and instructs various clinical training and education programs. Justin Mast, BSN, RN, CEN, FAWM Crisis and Continuity Advisor, MESH Coalition Justin is a certified emergency nurse and is currently pursuing his Master s degree in Emergency and Disaster Management. He is also an Indirect Trainer for FEMA, a member of Colorado2 Disaster Medical Assistance Team and the National Medical Response Team-Central. In 2010 Justin started the Hospital Emergency Response Team at his hospital and provided leadership during the aftermath of the theater shooting in July of Alice Jordan-Miles, BA, MSEd Assistant Director, Behavioral Health and Family Studies Institute, College of Health and Human Services Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne Dana Greenwood, MPH, BSN, RN Indiana Department of Health Immunization Program, Chief Nurse Consultant Jolene Bracale, MSN, RN Indiana Department of Education; Program Coordinator for Student Health Services Jolene has been a nurse for 31 years, a school nurse for 15 years and the Indiana School Nurse Consultant for 3 years. Lindsey Minchella, MSN RN NCSN FNASN Retired School Nurse Coordinator; Special Needs School Nurse Consultant Lindsey has been a nurse for 35 years, 27 in special needs school nursing. She has served on the board of NASN and is Chair if NASN s Special Needs School Nurses Special Interest Group
