Internship and graduation assignments Research group Smart Functional Materials September February 2017 Would you like to work full-time on your research during your internship or graduation assignment and have a team of experienced researchers available for questions and support? Participate in our projects with innovative, sustainable and functional textile solutions in the research group Smart Functional Materials. With 4 research lines, an international network and a large portfolio of research projects, we are constantly looking for students. 1. Sustainalbe Textiles Within this research line, led by Gerrit Bouwhuis, we focus on new materials made of cotton waste (like the SaXcell fibre), applying biopolymers in technical textiles and developing for recycling. 2. Interactive Smart Textiles Led by Eliza Bottenberg, this research focus on the development of smart textiles that can react with changes in the surrounding. For example a sensor carpet that measures where a person is walking or a sensorshirt that measures respirations and heartbeat. 3. Surface Modification Within the research line surface modification, led by Henk Gooijer, we focus on adding or improving functionalities of textile materials. For example digital printing or 3D printing. One example is printing special nanoparticles with antibacterial properties on hospital textiles. 4. Textile- and Clothing Technology Led by Theresia Grevinga, this research focuses on applying recent developments in the textile and clothing research within the textile industry. For example producing garments of recycled fibres or without patterns. For more information meet us at the 2 nd floor (room G2.27) or contact me by (Laura Erkens: l.m.erkens@saxion.nl).

1.1 Sustainable Textiles - Project SaXcell Recently, the research group Smart Functional Materials, at Saxion has achieved the recycling of cellulose waste into a new innovative cellulose fibre: SaXcell. The SaXcell fibre can be spun and woven or knitted into a new fabric. Research of students is very important within this project to optimize the fibre. Two graduation assignment are available within this project. Assignments Market introduction strategies for SaXcell fibres This SaXcell fibre is suitable to be converted into 100% SaXcell yarn. However, this material is different to existing materials at the textile market. For this reason, intimate mixed fibres of SaXcell yarn with different amounts of, i.e. cotton or polyester SaXcell inside could be prepared that have similar characteristics than known materials at the market. The student should look at strategies to introduce SaXcell into the textile market and should focus on the difference between 100% SaXcell and SaXcell inside. Characterization of waste streams for the SaXcell process The recycling process of SaXcell fibre strongly depends on the concrete waste stream. Pure cotton waste is rare and will increase in prize as the demand on this pure waste increases. Other textile waste streams often have impurities like other textile materials and dyestuffs that make the recycling process more complex. The student will look at the different waste streams that are available as cellulose source for the SaXcell process and will analyse the waste streams on cellulose content, impurities, costs etc Sustainable Textiles - Project Recurve In project Recurve, the possibilities to create new (bio)- composites from waste streams of textile fibres and waste streams of bio-based plastics, are researched. The composites will be used for interior or exterior applications. Composites could be made from all types of textiles (yarns, fabrics, non-wovens, lamintes, etc.).

Assignments Two assignments are available for F&TT students with technical specialisation. Both assignments contain literature research, design and development of prototype composites. One assignment will focus on the waste stream of natural fibres. The other assignment will focus on the waste stream of thermoplastic fibres. The prototype composites will be made and tested in the textile lab and the lab of research group lightweight constructions, both at Saxion. Guidance For more info you can contact Mr. Pramod Agrawal. or phone: Sign up If you are interested, please contact Mr. Pramod Agrawal. 2.1 Interactive Smart Textiles Project TexEnergie TexEnergie is about the integration of solar cells and batteries in textile materials. This is a way to produce innovative and sustainable products that (as standalone) can harvest and safe energy. In cooperation with international companies, research centre and research groups from Avans and Saxion, several prototypes will be developed. State of the art technologies for solar cells and batteries will be used to develop the prototypes. The assignment For the research and the development of several prototypes, we are looking for students. The following prototype will be developed: sportshirt, curtain, military equipment, roll curtain for greenhouses, tensile structures, work wear for nurses and a composite guardrail. Depending on the background and interests of the students, the assignment will be finalised. Assignments could focus for example on design of the products, laminating of stitching of the flexible solar cells, flexible batteries in in seams, marketing research of the products, etc.

Guidance Eliza Bottenberg, Carlos Kuhlmann or Laura Erkens will coach the students. Contact them for more info: and Sign Up If you are interested, please contact Mrs Eliza Bottenberg. Send your application; enclose a short CV and a short motivation. We will arrange as soon as possible an intake, where we can further explain the project and discuss the assignment. 3.1 Surface Modification - Nanotextile for Health Care Nanotextiles for Health Care is a big research project on the application of inorganic nanoparticles to create antimicrobial textiles for the health care sector. Two student assignments are available for this project. Assignments Apply and test nanoparticles on textiles One assignment focuses on the application of nanoparticles on textile and test the durability of the antibacterial activity. The student will start with a short literature review on antimicrobial textiles to get familiar with the topic and to acquire a basic understanding and knowledge on the topic. The student will also study reports on earlier research on this topic in the project Nanotextiles for Health Care in which the application of the nanoparticles is described. The student will apply the antibacterial nanoparticles on different substrates and test the rubbing and washing fastness of the antibacterial activity as a function of application technique (e.g.

exhaust or padding) and application conditions (e.g. temperature, concentration), pre-treatment and type of nanoparticles. The student will also supply other research groups in the project with antibacterial test samples, e.g. for testing of toxicological effects and the tests with end-users. The antibacterial activity of the textiles will be determined by Hogeschool Zuyd, which is also participating in this project and which has the required expertise and knowledge on the testing of antibacterial properties of textiles. The student will have a regular contact with them on the testing results and methods. The nanoparticles will be obtained from the research group Nanobiotechnology at Saxion. Develop and test demonstrators The other assignment focuses on the development and testing of demonstrators: a hospital curtain and nurse uniform. The student will start with a short literature review on antimicrobial textiles to get familiar with the topic and to acquire a basic understanding and knowledge on the topic. The student will also study reports on earlier research on this topic in the project Nanotextiles for Health Care in which the application of the nanoparticles is described. The student will work on the realisation of the demonstrators, a hospital curtain and a nurse uniform, in close cooperation with the participating textile companies, as Wevotex, JB Textiles and De Berkel. The student will participate in the testing programme of the demonstrators, which will be executed by the Industrial Design research group. The student will cooperate with students Industrial Product Design and Nursery. In the testing programme, the student will perform textile and functional tests, e.g. measuring the touch of the fabric, washing fastness and water uptake. Guidance Mr. Henk Gooijer and Mr. Rick Hobert will coach the students. They can provide you with more information: h.gooijer@saxion.nl and r.h.hobert@saxion.nl Sign Up If you are interested, please contact Mr. Henk Gooijer.

3.1 Surface Modification Family Dairy Tech The Family Dairy Tech project is an international Living Technology project. Several research groups from Saxion work together with national and international companies to help dairy farmers in India to increase their diary (milk) production and improve living standards. Assignments Two assignments are available for F&TT students with technical specialisation. Both assignments focus on how to improve the dairy production of cows in India. How could textiles be involved to improve this? One assignment focus on the cows, happy cows give better milk. What can be done to improve the milk production of the cows? The second assignment focuses on the housing and services of the cows. What can be improved for the housing and services and what solutions could textiles offer. One student could visit India as part of the research. Guidance For more info you can contact Mr. Pramod Agrawal. or phone: Sign up If you are interested, please contact Mr. Pramod Agrawal. 4.1 Textile and Clothing Technology - Closing the Loop/Going Eco Going Dutch Textiles and sustainability is an important theme in the Dutch textile, clothing and fashion world. Saxion and Texperium work together to respond to these issues. They are both active on political level and in concrete projects as well, which demonstrate that sustainable textiles, clothing and fashion can be produced in larger quantities. Four students are needed for the project Closing the loop/going Eco Going Dutch. These students will focus their research on: textile recycling, spinning of recycled fibres, design for recycling (D4R) or recycling in design (RiD). Saxion, Texperium, ArtEZ and several Dutch textile and fashion companies cooperate in the project Closing the loop and Going Eco Going Dutch. The goal is to show that, based on sustainable fibres and

fibres produced in the Netherlands (hemp and recycled textiles), beautiful new products can be made. Trainees are sought to assist in giving the project form and content, both from a technical and a creative point of view. We are looking for a group of 4 students in order to maximize the interaction between technology and creativity. The technology will indicate the opportunities and limitations of the present textile recycling technologies, and on the other hand the creative designs part of the technological limitations might be more clear and solved. Through interaction between technology and creativity, we hope and expect that better; more beautiful and more sustainable products can be developed. Coordination There will be close cooperation between the four trainees. In addition we expect from you that you are willing to take initiative, out of the box thinking, solution driven; all these components are an important part in these assignments. There will be a joint meeting every 14 days, alternating at Saxion and Texperium. The interactions we aim at are shown in the figure below. Recycling Optimizing fibre length distribution: removal non - textile content Spinning Problem solving shredding: solutions by design Specified yarn and yarn count: how to use imperfect yarns in a design Design for recycling Product specifications both from a technical and design perspective Recycling in Design Assignments Recycling In this traineeship you will work mainly on extracting fibres from discarded textile products. That might be sweaters, jeans, dresses, curtains, sheets and much more. You're going to experiment in the technicum of Texperium with machinery and machine settings to make the finest recycled fibres. Problems in producing the fibres are discussed with the D4R-trainee so that he/she can look in the design or make a better recyclable design. In order to get the best possible fibre

you have to characterize the input material: knitted fabrics have a different "treatment" than woven fabrics. The extent to which you have shred the material as to be discussed with the trainee Spinning, because shredding and the spinning pre-treatment are complementary processes. Spinning In this traineeship you are going to find out how you can make a good yarn from recycled fibbers. The yarns are meant for the interns D4R and RiD (and companies participating in the project Closing the Loop). To make a good yarn you have to perform a variety of processes different for each material. You're going to discuss your results with the trainee mechanical recycling and identify quality of the recycled fibres you can use. You might have to mix the recycled fibres with virgin fibres such as hemp and wool. Spinning yarns and draw up the specifications of these yarns (yarn weight, strength, elongation) is also part of the work (it is expected that Texperium in the 3rd quarter 2015) has its own spinning machine). You will discuss your results with respect to the quality of the yarns with the trainees D4R and RID, because that will process your yarns in a number of products. Design for Recycling In your traineeship you mainly look at the impact of the design on the recyclability of the product. In consultation with the trainee mechanical recycling, you investigate which aspects in clothing and fashion are limiting the recycling. You are looking for solutions to minimize these barriers. You'll need to delve into other ways of connecting textile fabric together, thinking of other closures, reduce the use of material combinations (or design for disassembly proposals). This also applies to labels and accessories. If a number of issues can't be resolved in the design, then you enter into consultation with the trainee RiD and discus to what extent recycled materials can be used in RiD -designs (these are always sustainable products) and the trainee mechanical recycling if the problem can't be solved by adapting the shredding process. Recycling in Design As trainee recycling in design, you will work with sustainable yarns made by the spinning trainee. These yarns are likely to be less than perfect compared to yarns from virgin fibres. In your design you should therefore take into account the limitations of the yarn, and compensate / integrate these limitations into your designs. You can specify your wishes regarding the yarns with the trainee Spinning. You will also be responsible for using the recycled yarns into knits and / or woven fabrics. You'll have to do this yourself or arrange it with partners in the project Closing the Loop. When designing, you also take into account the constraints, which are identified by the trainee D4R.

Guidance Theresa Grevinga of Saxion and Anton Luiken of Texperium will coach the students. They can provide you with more information: and (or or Sign Up If you are interested, please contact Theresa Grevinga. Do this as soon as possible but no later than June With your application, please enclose a short CV and a short motivation. We will arrange as soon as possible an intake, where we can further explain the project and where you can specify what objectives you want to achieve in the stage.
