1 Exporting Static and Animated Images using GeoGebra GeoGebra s drawing pad can be exported as 2 types of pictures, a static picture and an animated picture. These exporting options can be found under File and Export. GeoGebra has 3 options for exporting an image, 2 of which create a static image and one creates an animated image. The first choice is Graphics View as Picture, which will create an image as a separate file for you to save to your computer. The second option for a static image is Graphics View to Clipboard, Which will save a copy of your graphics view to your clipboard. Thus, they can be easily inserted into text processing or presentation documents allowing you to create appealing sketches for tests, quizzes, notes, or mathematical games. The option for an animated image is Graphics View as Animated GIF. This option allows any construction that utilizes a slider for motion to be exported as an animated image. This option can be useful in PowerPoint and other similar presentation software. Part 1: Exporting Graphics View as Picture Create your sketch Open a new GeoGebra document and make sure the algebra window, input field, and coordinate axes are hidden. Steps: 1) Create a polygon using the either the Polygon or the Regular Polygon tool. 2) Using the Properties window or the formatting bar format your polygon however you wish. Ex: 3) Resize your polygon so it is about the size you wish it to be once it is exported as an image. (Either moving the vertices or utilizing the zoom tools can do this.)

2 4) Next we need to move your image to the upper left corner of the Graphics window. Click on the Move Graphics View tool and use this to move the entire graphics view to the corner. Ex: 5) We must now resize the Graphics view, in the bottom right corner of the GeoGebra window there are angled lines. Click and drag this corner till your window is a good size. (Make the window as small as possible without cutting off any of your polygon.) 6) The last step is to click File and scroll down to Export choose Export Graphics View as Picture. This window will pop up and you have choices of different picture formats, Scale and resolution. The PNG type will work with most word processing programs and presentation tools. Also you should not have to worry about the resolution or scale if you already resized your image. Just choose save and decide where to save the image on your computer.

3 Part 2: Exporting Graphics to Clipboard If you need to save time at this point you may use the same polygon from Exporting Graphics View to Picture. The sketch bellow utilizes more tools and mathematical concepts so it is good to create. (As a trainer you may decide this for yourself.) Create your sketch Open a new GeoGebra document and make sure the algebra window, input field, and coordinate axes are shown. 1 f(x) = 0.5x 3 + 2x x - 1 Enter the cubic polynomial f 2 R = Root[ f ] Create the roots of polynomial f Hint: If there are more than one root GeoGebra will produce indices for their names if you type in R = (e.g. R 1, R 2, R 3 ). 3 E = Extremum[ f ] Create the extrema of polynomial f 4 Create tangents to f in E 1 and E 2 5 I = InflectionPoint[ f ] Create the inflection point of polynomial f Hint: You might want to change properties of objects (e.g. color of points, style of the tangents, show name and value of the function).

4 Exporting a picture to the clipboard GeoGebra will export the whole graphics window into the clipboard. Thus, you need to make the GeoGebra window smaller in order to reduce unnecessary space on the drawing pad: Move your figure (or the relevant section) to the upper left corner of the drawing pad using the Move drawing pad tool (see left figure below). Hint: You might want to use tools Zoom in and Zoom out in order to prepare your figure for the export process. Reduce the size of the GeoGebra window by dragging its lower right corner with the mouse (see right figure below). Hint: The pointer will change its shape when hovering above an edges or corner of the GeoGebra window. GeoGebra window before the size reduction GeoGebra window after the size reduction Use the File menu to export the drawing pad to the clipboard: Export Drawing Pad to Clipboard Hint: You could also use the key combination Ctrl Shift C. Your figure is now stored in your computer s clipboard and can be inserted into any word processing or presentation document.

5 Part 3: Exporting Graphics View as Animated GIF Create your sketch Open a new GeoGebra document and make sure the algebra input field, and coordinate axes, and grid are showing. Steps: 1) Create a slider using the Slider Tool and five it the following parameters: Name - m, Max positive 10, Min - negative 10, and increment 0.1 (Move the slider to the upper left hand corner of the screen.) 2) Next Create slider b with the same parameters as slider m and move it just below slider m. 3) In the Input Field type: f(x)=m*x+b 4) Next we insert dynamic text with the text tool : i. Choose the tool and click the screen and a box should appear type y= in it: ii. Next select the objects pull-down window and select f as you see in the 2 images below and click OK: (Format your text in the object properties window and place it near your sliders.)

6 5) Now we must format the view the graphics view and our objects. First format your sliders and your function line using either edit properties or by using the formatting bar. Then Format your graphics view by right clicking (Control Click) the graphics view but not on any objects and choose Graphics. Here you can change the color of your grid and set increments for your axes. There are many other aspects of this window to explore and when there is time go through them and play with the different options. 6) Next we need to move your image to the upper left corner of the Graphics window. Click on the Move Graphics View tool and use this to move the entire graphics view to the corner. Also hide the Input bar. Ex:

7 7) We must now resize the Graphics view, in the bottom right corner of the GeoGebra window there are angled lines. Click and drag this corner till your window is a good size. (Make the window as small as possible without cutting off any of your polygon.) 8) The last step is to click File and scroll down to Export choose Export Graphics View as Animated GIF. This window will pop up and first must choose one of your sliders to animate because it will only allow one to move. In this case I have chosen slider m. Next you input a time between frames, which defaults as 500 ms. This speed was a little slow when I placed it in a PowerPoint so I will choose 100 ms but you may experiment later till you find a speed you like. Last is Loop for this I checked it off but depending on the animation you may not want it to loop.

8 Inserting Pictures into a Text Processing Document Inserting pictures from the clipboard After exporting a figure from GeoGebra into your computer s clipboard you can now paste it into a word processing document (e.g. MS Word). Open a new text processing document From the Edit menu select Paste. The picture is inserted at the position of the cursor. Hint: You can use the key combination Ctrl V instead. Inserting pictures from the file: After exporting a figure from GeoGebra to a file on your computer you can now import that file into a word processing document (e.g. MS Word) or a slide show viewer (e.g. MS PowerPoint). Open a new Slide Show document From the Insert menu select Picture. The picture is inserted at the position of the cursor.

9 Reducing the size of pictures If necessary you can reduce the size of the picture in MS Word: Double click the inserted picture. Select the Size tab in the appearing Format Picture window. Change height / width of the picture either in cm (inches) or percent. Click OK. Note: If you change the size of a picture, the scale is modified. If you want to maintain the scale (e.g. for your students to measure lengths) make sure the size of the picture is 100%. Note: If a picture is too big to fit on one page MS Word will reduce its size automatically and thus, change its scale.
