3. Course modules - descriptions Detailed descriptions of departmental courses Water Management Comakership You will be well equipped to participate in a multidisciplinary project on the development and current water risk issues in The Flevoland polder and the Ijssel/Vecht Delta in The Netherlands. The form in which the project is done is comakership - a project with an actual issue to be dealt with in an organisation. In multidisciplinary teams working inside the organisation which wants the researchers to tackle the issue. This enhances feel for the matter and a fall-back option for international applications. The objective of the comaker is to educate students in methods and tools needed for sustainable integrated water risk management. The main objective of the comaker is the formulation of a joint vision on the future of the area. But the process itself will also lead to: Improved co-operation with organisations Joint efforts in polder management Shared analysis of complex problems Team building Capacity building related to polder management objectives Comakership The full course is divided into 3 parts. 1. Project work 2. Field study/research 3. Diverting a vision and report/presentation literature EC Level Comments Drs. A.M. Rompelman 10 - The project is being judged on: - Project Management Portfolio - Research Project Portfolio - Individual learning portfolio related to course competences *) All these elements are being judged with a mark between 1 and 10. (1 being seriously disqualified, 10 being outstanding) *) For instance: the competences for the course program of civil engineering to be incorporated in the comaker can be from Program of Requirements to Designing, Detailing & Calculating Held incompany at locations in and around Flevoland WFCBRH.MICMP.V414 1 and 2

Professional Skills Objectives Literature Lecturers ECTS Assessment Level Comments In this course, students ought to master English at an advance level (towards C1 level CEFR). Communication skills in various engagements such as interviews, problematic situations and consultancies. An understanding of the communication in English, including interviewing and consultancy skills. The ability to analyse different situations and use adequate proficiency. workshops Marieke Veltman M.Sc. 2 English level B1 (CEFR) Oral exam & Assignments WFCBRH.MIPSP.V414 1, Drainage & Flood control objectives literature EC Level comments The title of this course module refers to the playing field of the Dutch Water Boards: regional Water Management and safety. The general principles of this modules are applicable to the international context. In the Netherlands a lot of data are available, more than IS USUAL abroad. In this module rules of thumb are applied. This enhances feel for the matter and a fall-back option for international applications. This course module is set up to give a broad overview of regional Water Management and care for regional dams for water safety. Technical details will be given in practical assignments. 7 Hydrology Water dominates our lives: we live on a planet with much water and our lives depend on it in many ways. Despite the seeming abundance of water on the planet - with over 70% being salt water - human activity and prevailing climate conditions are placing more pressure on our supply of water than ever before, however. With this pressure comes a need to understand the physical principles of hydrology - the study of the occurrence, movement, and physical properties of non-oceanic water on and below the earth's surface - an understanding that can be applied to water management and related innovations. The study of physical properties is done most effectively through mathematical representations of concepts and processes. Introduction to Physical Hydrology includes a carefully-developed and class-tested learning framework: an extensive range of examples and exercises, and further maths support in the form of a series of Maths Toolboxes help the reader engage with and understand the maths required to master the subject. objectives literature ECTS level comments With hydrology now being approached from environmental and social perspectives, in addition to the more traditional physical geography and civil engineering perspectives, there has never been a more important time to develop a sound understanding of the subject. Introduction to Physical Hydrology is the perfect course companion while you develop this understanding. Hydrology provides a solid grounding in the principles of the subject. Exploring the principal rules that govern the flow of water on the land, it considers the four major types of water: atmospheric, ground, soil, and surface. It gives insights into the major hydrological processes, and shows how the principles of physical hydrology inform our understanding of climate and global hydrology - the largescale study of hydrology with which we need to grapple to fully understand the impact of the climate on water supply. Lectures Introduction to physical hydrology, Martin Hendriks, Oxford University Press ISBN Drs. A.M. Rompelman 4 Advanced level mathematics Written exam WFCBRH.MIHYD.V414 1

Data analysis Objectives Literature EC level comments Data analysis methods are needed in the management of polders. The subjects will be treated in workshops. In the field of Water Management you will need this understanding to be able to analyze the influence of objects and features in the earth system. Calculation models (GIS, groundwater and 1D flow) are part of this course. Students know and are able to apply several data analysis methods. The goal of Data Analysis is to map and understand the (spatial) dimension of Earth s systems. Armed with the spatial analysis tools of geographic science and the Remote sensing approach, the water manager can interpret the surroundings better. Assignments Deltares 3 Assignments WFCBRH.MIDAP.V414 2 Polder21 The typical landscape of polders (reclaimed land) with its characteristic locks, dikes, windmills, farms and cows is instantly recognizable. This rational landscape is unique, but also fragile. The Netherlands has more than three thousand polders, which have undergone various spatial developments over the years. They will continue to change as a result of pressures from urban and rural factors. But how? Together with the climate change it indicates for the region that Windesheim is in, a multidisciplinary water risk management issue. This calls for intelligent solutions. Water does not stop at administrative or political boundaries, so the best way to protect and manage water is by close international co-operation between all the parties within the geographical and hydrological unit of the polder bringing together all interests in and around the system. All European waters are managed using a river basin approach since 2000 when the EU Water Framework Directive was adopted by the European Union creating a new tool for the effective management of water resources. This however does not entirely work in polders. Examples of polders which will be outlined during this course are, the polders of The Netherlands, Romanie, Jakarta etc.. In the field of Water Management you will need this understanding to grasp the influence of your decisions into the polder system.

The objective of Polder21 is to educate students in methods and tools needed for sustainable integrated polder management. Lectures contain background information on (international) polders, climate change modeling, decision making, actor analysis, and role playing. objectives The main objective of Polder21 is the formulation of a joint vision on the future of the polder. But the process itself will also lead to: Improved co-operation among riparian states Joint efforts in water / polder management Shared analysis of complex problems Team building Capacity building related to polder planning The full course Polder21 is divided into 3 parts. 1. Polder management: This part contains 7 lectures with obligatory presence. During one of the lectures a small excursion is organized in the Flevoland polder. Introduction vision building 2. Field study abroad 3. Diverting a vision and report/presentation literature EC level comments Ir. Annebeth Loois 8 - Polder21 is being judged on: - A written exam (for Polder Management) - Active participation during both lectures and excursion = Presence during the lectures (all are obligatory) - Presentation techniques (moviemaking, PowerPoint and poster presentation) - Your role as a team player in a transdisciplinairy and international team - Reflection All these elements are being judged with a mark between 1 and 10. (1 being seriously disqualified, 10 being outstanding) Take into account that the field work will have about 350,- on travel/hostel expenses WFCBRH.MIP21.V414 2

Wetskills objectives Wetskills Water Challenge is an event for students and young professionals from all over the world. The participants develop their own innovative and creative concepts for broad water issues in a changing world. The objective of Wetskills is to educate students in methods and tools needed for sustainable integrated water management. The main objective of Wetskills is the formulation of a joint vision on the future of a water management issue. But the process itself will also lead to: Improved co-operation with water related industry Joint efforts in water management Shared analysis of complex problems Team building Capacity building related to polder planning The full course is divided into 3 parts.
