3 SABRİ ÜLKER INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AWARD The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation was established in 2009 as an independent, scientific, non-profit organization with the objective of enhancing nutrition science and knowledge, with a special focus on the Turkish population and regional neighbours. Key focus areas of the foundation include: Presenting the public with useful information relating to public derived from a variety of reliable sources, both nationally and internationally, Encouraging optimum health by considering food and diet, nutrition and lifestyle, Supporting and encouraging new research, education and other initiatives in the field of public health and nutrition. In order to encouraget new scientific research of the highest quality in the area of public health and nutrition in 2014 Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation initiated a Science Award. In 2014 and 2015 the award attracted a wide variety of applications of a high standard. Sabri Ulker Foundation is keen to encourage high quality nutrition research by young scientists. This year the Foundation would particularly like to see applications from younger scientists.

4 03 Background - the rationale for focusing on nutrition and health Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) have overtakeen infectious diseases as the major cause of deaths worldwide. According to the World Health Organization's (WHO) report, the "Global Status Report on Noncommunicable Diseases 2014," updated in January 2015, non-communicable diseases kill some 38 million people each year. Low and middle socioeconomic status countries account for 28 million of these deaths. Cardiovascular disease, cancers, chronic diesases of the respiratory system and diabetes are the top four causes of death worldwide. If the current trend continues the WHO predicts that the number of deaths caused by noncommunicable diseases will reach 55 million per annum by Rectifiable risk factors such as unhealthy nutrition and lifestyles are primary contributory factors and it is clear that adequate and balanced nutrition is a critical step towards reducing risk. The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation, through its various initiatives, aspires to contribute towards a reduction in the risk of noncommunicable diseases. Applications for consideration for the Sabri Ülker International Science Award should demonstrate how the project in question contributes to our knowledge of the relationship between nutrition, health and disease and its relevance to consumers should be highlighted.

5 The objectives of the Sabri Ülker Science Award The objectives of the Sabri Ülker International Science Award are as follows: To encourage leading-edge scientific research on public health and nutrition in academic, industry, and other research institutes, To support scientific studies relevant to nutrition and public health To benefit society by facilitating the publication of relevant research To contribute to improving social awareness of the role of nutrition and lifestyle in longterm health To support projects that encourage consumers to adopt a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle To encourage young scientists Project applications will be assessed according to their compliance with these objectives. 6 05 Terms and Conditions for applicants for the Sabri Ülker International Science Award All applications must be submitted in English given the international nature of the award and the jury Corporate sponsorship is not permitted but projects can be funded by non-corporate grant-awarding bodies Both Turkish and foreign nationals may apply for the Sabri Ülker International Science Award. Applications must be based on original scientific research The project owners, who are younger than 45 years old can apply for the Sabri Ülker International Science Award. The Project which is the subject of an application must have been completed but must not have been commercialized. SABRİ ÜLKER INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AWARD

Julian Kim Aschoff Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation Board Member Ali Ülker The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation will present the Sabri Ülker International Science Award to the applicant which, according to the judges best achieves the objectives listed. The judges' decision is final. The competition is open to undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students. Applicants must not have received an award for the same project in a previous competition. Applications must be submitted by a Project Representative. If more than one person has been involved in the project, the percentage contribution of the individual team members must be given. The award will be shared among the Project team according to the percentages shown in the deed of consent. Where more than one person is involved in a project a Deed of Consent must be signed by all team members before the application can be accepted. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The applicant is responsible for the accuracy of all the information provided in the submission documents. An award winner cannot use the same project to apply for a subsequent Sabri Ülker International Science Award. However, participants who have not been granted an award may use the same project in future competitions. A person may submit more than one project for consideration. Employees of the Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation, members of the Science Committee, and Jury members or their relatives are not eligible to apply for the Sabri Ülker International Science Award.

8 07 Evaluation The evaluation of the Sabri Ülker International Science Award will be made by an international jury. All projects will initially be evaluated online, anonymously, and according to the evaluation criteria listed above. The best 5 projects will be shortlisted. The Jury will then invite the top five candidates to make an oral presentation at a date, time and venue to be determined by the Secretariat of The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation. The winning project will be publicly announced at the award ceremony of the Sabri Ülker International Science Award.. The Jury may, at its discretion, decide to divide the award between a number of deserving candidates or choose not to make an award. When necessary, the Jury may involve external experts in order to ensure an objective and thorough assessment of each project. Project Presentation Presentations of the top five projects, as determined by the Sabri Ülker International Science Award Jury, will be made at a Jury meeting.the following rules apply for these presentations: The presentation must be concise. It should comprise a brief summary highlighting the key elements of the project. Visual aids may be used to enhance the presentations. The time allotted for each presentation is 10 minutes. Award Secretariat The Secretariat for the award will be provided by The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation. Confidentiality and Ethical Principles The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all information provided with the applications and during the evaluations. The Jury is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of the files provided. Information received during the evaluation, any observations, and the project scores are considered to be confidential information. The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation does not disclose any confidential information to third parties other than those required to complete the evaluations as described above. The Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation reserves the right to modify the terms and conditions of the competition. The evaluation of the Sabri Ülker International Science Award will be made by an international jury. The best 5 projects will be shortlisted.

9 Jury Principles The duties and responsibilities of the Jury are as follows: To determine the winner among the top 5 projects as determined by an online evaluation To comply with the scientific rules and criteria To make objective evaluations To sign a Non-Disclosure agreement

In the event that the prize winner of the International Science Award is not a resident of Turkey, the prize money shall be remitted using the Central Bank of Turkey s buying rate of exchange valid on May 5, 2016 and presented to the winner in the currency of the country of residence. The winner shall be responsible for all related liabilities (e.g. taxes, fees, and so on) that he/she may incur in Turkey or elsewhere. 11 10 Evaluation Criteria The evaluation criteria and weighting for the award are as follows: Criterion Content Contribution to overall score (%) Description of Objective, Originality, and Innovation Projects must be original, innovative and based on scientific research. If the project was submitted previously, it must have addressed any points raised in the previous assessment. The project objectives must be measurable, achievable, and realistic. 20 Social Aspect, Value Added The project must benefit society with regard to nutrition and public health. 20 Experimental Techniques and Methodology The project correctly applies appropriate problem-solving techniques with supporting evidence. The project includes an implementation plan. The project includes an assessment of the potential risks of the solution. 20 Results The project results are relevant to the solution of the issue. The project explains discrepancies between the planned objectives and actual results. 20 Standardization and Dissemination The Project should be the subject of a minimum of one peer-reviewed publication The project results will most likely inspire additional research in the field Patent applications are encouraged 20 Total 100 The criterias are designed to be used during the jury's evaluations. After preliminary evaluation a final shortlist of 5 projects will be selected and voted on by the jury. The voting process will use a secret ballot,a secret identity, and an open count.
