In t he historical develop ment of book collections in China, Song Dynasty stands as a landmark wit h it s develop ment of four systems in t he collection of books official collectio n, p rivate collectio n, academic collection and the collection in t he temples. Collection by t he royal family was a major component in t he official collection of books. It performed a service mainly for t he emperors and t he royal family member s. Besides t he libraries in t he imperial palace specially built fo r t he collectio n of boo ks, an immense collectio n of boo ks, paintings, calligrap hy, imperial edict s, poems and emperors handwritings and paintings were also displayed in the palace where emperors handled state and p ublic affairs, and in t he imperial gardens. for t he collectio n of boo ks inside t he imperial palace. regulatio ns. This reflect s t he art2oriented policy of the Song Dynasty and t he unprecedented social and cult ural prosperity as well as the develop ment of t he book industry in t he Song Dynasty.
