1 SILVERSTAR - solar control glass
2 Solar control at its best with SILVERSTAR coatings Modern glass facades are an expression of contemporary architecture. Glass ensures plenty of natural daylight, which has a direct positive influence on well-being and quality of life. However, large areas of glass may also give rise to undesirable heat build-up in summer. SILVERSTAR solar control insulating glasses permit optimum use of the natural light source and can also prevent solar energy causing excessive increases in room temperatures. With SILVERSTAR solar control glasses, the indoor climate remains pleasant and comfortable even in summer while energy costs for air-conditioning are also reduced. These interrelated functions optimise the overall energy management of buildings in a cost-effective way. We offer a wide range of solar control products with balanced ratios of light transmission (LT value) and total solar energy transmittance (g value) in order to satisfy individual needs related to building services engineering. SILVERSTAR SELEKT The colour-neutral insulating glass provides the optimum combination of solar protection and thermal insulation for a pleasant indoor climate throughout the year. SILVERSTAR SELEKT is therefore also described as 4-seasons glass. SILVERSTAR SUPERSELEKT The SILVERSTAR SUPERSELEKT insulating glasses are optimised to achieve the highest possible selectivity (ratio of luminous transmission factor and total solar energy transmittance). SILVERSTAR COMBI The SILVERSTAR COMBI insulating glasses offer a balanced range of colour-neutral and colour-nuanced coatings with graduated light transmission and total solar energy transmittance values. SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP Insulating glasses which have been optimised to guard against the sun, offer the best protection against solar radiation. Thanks to the coloured appearance of the strongly reflective glasses, SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP also opens up exceptional design opportunities. 3 Functionality of solar control glass The complex SILVERSTAR coating systems reflect the long-wave infrared ray component of the incident solar radiation, which is primarily responsible for heating up interior spaces. The short-wave, visible radiation, on the other hand, passes through almost unhindered. In this way, solar control coatings reduce the inward transmission of energy, while still allowing natural daylight to enter the room. The special magnetron combi coatings used for the SIL- VERSTAR SELEKT, SILVERSTAR SUPERSELEKT and SILVERSTAR COMBI also ensure good thermal insulation in winter. An additional thermal insulation coating for triple insulating glass reduces the heat loss even further. This multifunctional property makes the insulating glasses a valuable building material for various application areas. SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP also offers the facility to cut heat losses efficiently by using additional colour-neutral SILVERSTAR thermal insulation coatings. Benefits of SILVERSTAR solar control glasses Reduction in energy costs for air-conditioning in summer through highly effective solar protection. Reduction in energy costs for artificial lighting thanks to high light transmission. Reduction in energy costs for heating in winter thanks to outstanding thermal insulation. Excellent workplace and living quality thanks to pleasant room temperatures and natural daylight. Natural, colour-neutral look or brilliant, colourful appearance, depending on the solar control glass used. Possibility of adding safety and acoustic insulation properties. Homogenous appearance of large facades through the use of colour-matching balustrade panels. Solar control glass is used in various application areas: Large glass facades and windows Residential construction Commercial, industrial and public buildings Transmission of daylight Solar control coating SILVERSTAR COMBI or SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP LOW-E thermal insulation coating Reflexion solar energy Heat reflexion LOW-E Heat reflexion COMBI

7 Seeing to architectonic ideas Light transmission Natural daylight is not onlymore agreeable than artificial light to the human eye, it also affects our metabolism and hormone balance. The light transmission of a glazing system is the percentage of sunlight in the visible light range that is allowed to pass from the outside into the interior. The LT value is partly dependent on the coating systems. SILVERSTAR COMBI coatings in particular are optimised to select between light and heat energy from the suns rays. Overall energy transmittance The g value states how much energy of the incident solar energy passes through the glass into the interior. The value is made up of two parts: Direct radiation transmission and secondary heat emission. Secondary heat emission results fromthe fact that the glass heats up as a result of the sunlight and then in turn emits heat both inwards and outwards. Selectivity characteristic (S) The selectivity characteristic indicates the ratio of translucency to overall energy transmittance. This characteristic S evaluates the solar control glasses in respect of the required high translucency relative to the low overall energy transmittance aimed at. A low selectivity characteristic expresses a favourable ratio. Light transmission degree S = Overall energy transmittance Radiation absorption The radiation absorption or energy absorption is understood as that proportion of radiation in the entire range of the solar spectrum that is absorbed by glazing Colour reproduction index Ra in transmission The colour reproduction index compares colour changes in objects located behind the coated thermal insulation glass. For the technical test, a normal light source is used, The scale for Ra goes up to 100. The nearer the better. Shading coefficient SC The shading coefficient is the quotient from the overall energy transmittance of a glazing system and the overall energy transmittance of an uncoated insulation glass. The shading coefficient is therefore a measure of the solar control effect. The g value of the uncoated two-sheet insulation glass is here set at 87 % as a constant. Example: SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP Blue 30 T has an overall energy transmittance of 22% as per EN ,22 SC = = 0,25 0,87 Spandrel glazing We recommend, for a well-harmonized glass frontage, the SWISSPANEL spandrel glasses. These glasses are suitable for warm and cold facade structures. The spandrel glazing is as a rule tempered, their minimum size is therefore 30 x 80 cm. Chameleon effect The reflection colour of coated solar control glasses ismainly affected by the incident light, so differing light conditions for example overcast or clear skies can alter the colour development of the glass. The colours of the surroundings also play an important role. High radiation absorption For glass combinations with a radiation absorption factor of more than 50%, the solar control glass should generally be tempered.
