2 A secure bearing you can always rely on For smooth processes Roller bearings in wire rod blocks are used to provide a secure and accurate mounting for axles, shafts and bevel gears. They ensure accurate, lowfriction, low-vibration rotation of such components. The roller bearings used in wire rod mills have to meet special requirements. The roll stands of the finishing block in particular experience extraordinarily high speeds and torques that need to transmitted through the drive train. SMS Meer roller bearings are manufactured to highprecision standards and designed to accommodate the necessary axial and radial loads. Depending on the design-related conditions, generally speaking, bearings with rollers are used to absorb the radial loads and ball bearings the axial loads. Separate absorption of these loads allows for higher precision of the work rolls and thus the dimensional accuracy of the rolled product. 3 Precise, stable and highly effective High speeds and dynamic loads in the wire rod blocks are the greatest challenges faced by the roller bearings. At a rolling speed of up to 120m/s combined with the shock loads caused by the product entering and leaving the block, the roller bearings are subjected to extraordinarily high loads. Depending on the form and temperature of the head and tail end of the rolling stock, this initial shock may be more than twice the normal rolling force or mill torque. The service life of roller bearings is reduced considerably by this demanding environment. Only stable, high-precision special bearings can accomodate for the loads incurred and enable long-term operation of the plant. Just like SMS Meer high-precision roller bearings, which have an accuracy standard of P5 - P2 to DIN 620 with regard to the geometrical and dimensional accuracy. Standard roller bearings, on the other hand, are only capable of bearing the forces incurred for a short period, if at all, and will fail as a result of wear or material fatigue. A cost and time-intensive plant shutdown is then inevitably the result. SMS Meer high-precision roller bearings are accurately manufactured to one thousandth of a millimeter more precise than any other manufacturer. Thanks to this high degree of precision, the bearings do not need to be marked with regard to eccentricity, so the conventional marking on the inner or outer race is omitted. How our customers benefit: When installing the bearings, and particularly in the case of paired bearings, no mounting errors can be made. Moreover, axles and shafts have less eccentricity, which in turn has a positive effect on the quality and dimensional accuracy of the rolled products. Cylindrical roller bearings for radial loads Due to the special shape of the rolling bodies, cylindrical roller bearings are suitable for maximum radial loads. In addition to the high load-bearing capacity, high speeds can also be accomodated, with the result that these bearings are used primarily in wire rod mills. The cages offer a particularly high degree of strength and stability to cope with the strong acceleration and deceleration forces imposed by the rolling process. Deep groove ball bearings for radial and axial loads These single-row bearings are suitable for high speeds and primarily absorb radial loads and, to a lesser extent, axial loads. Deep groove ball bearings are versatile in terms of their use, however they cannot be disassembled for mounting purposes. Therefore despite their suitability for high speeds and axial and radial loads they are not the only bearing used; other bearing types are also used. 4

5 Super precise and high load-bearing capability Precise, with no deviations Angular contact ball bearings for radial and axial loads Angular contact ball bearings are able to absorb both radial and axial loads and are also suitable for high speeds. Single-row angular contact ball bearings, however, can absorb axial loads in just one direction only, with the result that that in many circumstances they are paired with a second bearing. The arrangement of the bearings in relation to each other influences the load absorption and axial clearance characteristics. SMS Meer high-precision roller bearings are manufactured to a universal design. The advantage: Your choice of bearings can be installed in the relevant layout; pairing or grouping of the bearings (as a result of eccentricity) is not absolutely essential. Tailor-made solutions with a universal arrangement If the load capacity of a single angular contact ball bearing is not sufficient, several bearings are installed next to each other. To ensure the most even load distribution possible and attain play in the bearing set, the bearings must be arranged to suit each other. A distinction is made between the X, O and tandem arrangement. Depending on the arrangement used, the axial loads are accommodated in different ways. Bearings installed in pairs are supplied individually, thus ensuring the bearings cannot be inadvertently mixed up during assembly. 9 Safety technology For original products To protect customers from the risks of fake products, SMS Meer roller bearings are provided with a DataMatrix code. The code is uniquely generated for each individual bearing, such that the authenticity of each bearing can be established beyond doubt. If there is any concern regarding the quality or origin of a bearing, SMS Meer can identify with absolute certainty whether it is an original product. Background: Copies and imitations of roller bearings are not uncommon. Many forgers try to profit from the market success of established manufacturers using products that are generally of poorer quality. It can be often difficult to identify such copies from the outside, however they cannot compete with the originals in terms of function, quality and service life. Plant shutdowns or total write-offs caused by roller bearing failures are not uncommon, unfortunately, and result in time and cost-intensive repairs. 11 Total compatibility Flexible retrofits with SMS Meer During the development of SMS Meer high-precision roller bearings our engineers ensured the outside dimensions and lube connections precisely match the bearing types of older assemblies. This results in full compatibility with wire rod block bearings from other manufacturers, which are similar in design to the SMS Meer wire rod blocks. These wire rod blocks can be easily retrofitted with no limitations with the high-precision roller bearings from SMS Meer. All the benefits as well as the high performance of SMS Meer roller bearings can be utilized immediately, without the need for design-related or mechanical modifications to existing plant components. Compatible, yet individual Even if SMS Meer high-precision roller bearings are compatible with other types of bearings, it does not mean that they are absolutely identical in design. SMS Meer is continuously improving the bearings to ensure consistently high product characteristics. Lubrication holes, for example, can be fitted in other positions or in varying numbers to achieve better lubrication and cooling of the bearing raceway. Such product improvements apply similarly to the cage or ring materials used, the number and absolute diameter of rolling elements or for axial and radial clearance.
