1 Grants and Fellowships for Art, Art History, and Design Faculty Listed below are some grant and fellowship opportunities available to scholars in Art, Art History, and Design. This list is not comprehensive and there may be other opportunities available. The deadlines are tentative; please check the websites for more information. Non-Residential Fellowships American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). Fellowships offered in any area of the humanities and humanistic social sciences and digital innovation scholarships. Stipends are $30,000 for assistant professors, $40,000 for associate professors, and up to $60,000 for full. You must apply on-line. Deadline: September 29, American Association of University Women (American Fellowships). Fellowships support women scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Deadline: November 15, 2010 ( National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). NEH fellowships support full-time work on a project in the humanities or humanistic social sciences for a period of six to twelve months. The stipend is $4,200 a month for up to 12 months (the typical range is from $40,000 to $50,400 a year). Applications must be submitted on-line. Last year s deadline: May 4, J.S. Guggenheim Foundation. Fellowships in the humanities, social sciences, and creative arts (excluding performing arts). Deadline: September 15, Residential Fellowships (requires residence at sponsor location) The American Antiquarian Society (AAS). AAS offers long-term visiting academic research fellowships tenable for four to twelve months each year, including the Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship, NEH fellowships, and ACLS Burkhardt fellowships. Shortterm fellowships are also available. All awards are for a period of residence to use the AAS library's resources for research and writing. Fellowships are also available to creative and performing artists, writers, film makers, journalists, and other persons whose goals are to produce imaginative, non-formulaic works dealing with pre-twentieth- 1

2 century American history. Deadline: multiple October through January. American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Multiple fellowships available including NEH, Mellon, travel and research fellowships for the Gennadius Library, and publication fellowships for scholars working on a Corinth or Agora publication. Deadline: Multiple, varies by program. Fulbright Fellowships support 800 U.S. faculty to go abroad each year, to some 140 countries. Grantees conduct research or lecture in a wide variety of academic fields. For more information and application materials, see the following website: Deadline: August 2, J. Paul Getty Trust. Getty Scholar, Visiting Scholar, Library Research Grants provide a research experience at the Getty Research Institute or the Getty Villa in Malibu. Check website for application guidelines. Deadline: November 1, Humboldt Fellowships. Residential fellowships in Germany for scholars in almost any field. For most fellowships, you must be under the age of 40. Deadline: anytime Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) supports scholarship in all fields of historical research, but is concerned principally with the history of western, near eastern and Asian civilizations, with particular emphasis upon Greek and Roman civilization, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern, and modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, the history of art, the history of science, philosophy, and modern international relations. Deadline: The application deadline is November 1st, but we recommend that scholars apply as early as possible, preferably by October 15th, as this allows time for references to be contacted (if appropriate) and for scholars who are asked to write references to submit their letters by the November 1st deadline. Metropolitan Museum of Art Fellowships. Pre-and post-doctoral research fellowships are available in Art History. Fields vary widely, consult website for complete information. Check website for deadline. National Gallery of Art Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. Up to 7 fellowships are awarded annually for study of a broad range of arts and geographical areas and time periods. See website for most current information. Deadline: October 15, Huntington Library Fellowships, Long- and Short-Term Awards The Huntington is an independent research center with holdings in British and American history, literature, art history, the history of science, and medicine. The library collections range chronologically from the ninth to the twentieth centuries and include a half million rare books and ephemera, 600,000 photographs, and approximately four million manuscripts 2

3 supported by a half million reference works. Eligible applicants must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent by June, 2009 and be pursuing scholarship in a field appropriate to the Huntington's collections. Deadline: December 15, National Humanities Center offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities during the academic year. Deadline: October 15, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Fellowships for Creative Artists, Humanists, and Social Sciences are designed to support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishment who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields and in the creative arts. Deadline: October 1, P/F Alaska Geographic / Denali National Park Artist-in-Residence Program Alaska Geographic is the nonprofit cooperative partner for Alaska s public lands and supports arts programs within these lands. Applications for the 2010 Denali National Park Artistin-Residence Program are now being accepted. Deadline: Oct. 31, P/F Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown The Fine Arts Work Center offers a residency program for writers and visual artists in the early stages of their careers. Located in Provincetown, the Work Center provides seven-month fellowships to twenty fellows each year in the form of living/work space and a modest monthly stipend. Residencies run from October 1 through May 1. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue their work independently in a diverse and supportive community. Deadline: Creative Writing Fellowship, Dec 1, 2010 Visual Arts Fellowship applications is February1, P/F The Printshop Keyholder Residencies. Residencies of various lengths offer emerging artists free 24-hour access to printmaking facilities to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. Artists from all disciplines are eligible to apply; print-making skills are not required, but some familiarity with the medium is recommended. Basic instruction in printmaking techniques is available for new Keyholders. Only legal US residents may apply. Next deadline: September 1, P/F The Anderson Ranch Artists' Residency Program Anderson Ranch offers artists a 2-3 month residency program designed to encourage the creative, intellectual and personal growth of emerging and established visual artists in ceramics, digital media/photography, furniture/design wood sculpture, painting and drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Residents are encouraged to pursue a multidisciplinary approach toward their work while at the Ranch. The application postmark deadline for the residency program is February 1, P/F Light Work Artist-in-Residence. Light Work invites between twelve and fifteen artists to come to Syracuse, New York each year to devote one month to creative projects. The 3

4 residency includes a $4,000 stipend, $500 in printing credit with a state-of-the-art digital lab, a furnished artist apartment, 24-hour access to our facilities, and generous staff support. Applications are accepted throughout the year. P/F The MacDowell Colony Fellowship and Residency provides artists with time, space, and an inspiring environment. The Colony accepts applications from artists working in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. The sole criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence, A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to eight weeks. There are no residency fees. Artists may apply once every 12 months. Deadlines vary depending on residency. P/F Millay Colony for the Arts Residency. Each year the Colony invites 48 individuals (composers, visual artists, writers, and their collaborators) for a Millay residency. Applicant s work is considered solely on the merit of artist's statement and work sample. Next application deadline is October 1, Notifications are sent out in the first week of February. P/F Yaddo Artists Community. Yaddo offers residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in one or more of the following media: choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Artists may apply individually or as members of a collaborative team. Deadlines: January 1 and August 1. P/F Women s Studio Workshop (WSW) Fellowship Program and Residencies. The Women s Studio Workshop has artist-in-residence programs that support the professional growth of individual artists. A WSW Residency differs from other residencies in that artistic staff is available to coach, train, and advise artists on all aspects of their projects. This active engagement allows artists to work across mediums, integrating new processes and materials into their work, or to gain new levels of mastery in specific disciplines. Artist's Book Residency is designed for an artist to produce a limited edition artist's book while in residence at the WSW. Art-in-Education Visiting Artist Residency is for an artist to create a limited edition artist's book, while also working with students during the Art-in-Education program. Ora Schneider Residency for Writers is for writers whose focus is contemporary art. Studio Residency is open to an artist working in any of WSW's studio areas to create a new body of work. These residencies have various deadlines. Studio, Ceramics, Arts-in-Education Fellowships are available for emerging artist. Deadlines vary. P/F Grants American Philosophical Society Franklin Research Grant. The Franklin program is particularly designed to help meet the costs of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or equivalent research materials; the costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses. Funding is available for 4

5 up to $6,000. Deadlines vary. Arts Midwest. Arts Midwest offers grants for Visual and Performing Arts programs, as well as for international exchange and hosting international artists. Deadlines and amounts vary. See website for more information P/F J.F. Costopoulos Foundation. Foundation supports dance, theater and film that: focuses on ancient or modern Greek culture; is created by Greek artists; or takes place in Greece. Seminars and conferences meeting the same criteria are also considered. Applications may be submitted from the beginning of April 1st until October 31st of the current year for projects that have been scheduled for the year to come. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award. The Asian Cultural Council makes this award to an individual from Asia or the United States who has made a significant contribution to the international understanding, practice, or study of the visual or performing arts of Asia. Grant covers research and international travel to study aspects of the arts in Asia. Inquiry form submitted by November 15, P/F NEH Scholarly Editions and Translation Program. Supports the preparation by a team of at least two editors and staff of texts and documents that are currently inaccessible or available in inadequate editions. Projects involving significant literary, philosophical, and historical materials are typical in this grant program, but other types of work, such as musical notation, are also eligible. Deadline: October 28, NEH Collaborative Research Program. Supports original research undertaken by a team of two or more scholars or research coordinated by an individual scholar that because of its scope or complexity requires additional staff and resources beyond the individual s salary. Eligible projects include: interpretive research; archaeology projects; translations; and conferences on topics of major importance in the humanities. Deadline: October 29, NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes. Allow scholars to direct 4-6 week summer seminars or institutes for college teachers (or high school teachers) in any topic in the humanities. Topics must be explored in-depth during the course of the seminars. Last year s deadline was March 2, The Open Society Institute. The Institute s Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to documentary photographers who have already completed a significant body of work on issues of social justice, to collaborate with a partner organization and propose new ways of using photography as a tool for positive social change. Deadlines vary: P/F Creative Capital Foundation Creative Capital supports individual artists with a fourpart approach that combines financial support with advice and services over a multi-year period. A high level of engagement with the foundation is expected throughout the term 5

6 of the grant. Artists can apply in five disciplines: visual arts (includes installation art, painting, fiber art, mixed media works, public art, etc.), film/video arts, performing arts (includes music, dance, theater, puppetry, performance art, etc.), and emerging fields (includes all forms of digital work and work that engages gaming, robotics, design, or new technologies), and innovative literature. Projects that transcend traditional discipline boundaries are highly encouraged. To be eligible to apply, an artist must be: a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident; at least 25 years old; a working artist with at least five years of professional experience. Next grant cycle will be as follows: February 2011: Accepting letters of inquiry in Film/Video and Visual Arts. February 2012: Accepting letters of inquiry in Emerging Fields, Innovative Literature, and Performing Arts. P/F Andy Warhol Foundation The Foundation serves the needs of artists by funding the institutions that support them. The Foundation does not make grants directly to individuals. Grants are made for scholarly exhibitions at museums; curatorial research; visual arts programming at artist- centered organizations; artist residencies and commissions; arts writing; and efforts to promote the health, welfare and first amendment rights of artists. The work of choreographers and performing artists occasionally is funded when the visual arts are an inherent element of a production. Grant requests are reviewed twice a year. The postmark deadlines for proposals are March and September 1. P/F Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF). Foundation funds interactive art that is art that is accessible to the public, civic in scope and prompts the viewer to act. Black Rock Arts Foundation gives grants to individual artists or artist collectives that create interactive artworks destined for communities. There are no geographic restrictions placed on those who can apply. Individuals, groups and established 501c3 non profits are all eligible to apply. Check website for submission deadline for next grant cycle deadline. Most likely due January P/F Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants to Representational Artists. The Foundation aids artists in the early stages of their careers. Awards are limited to candidates working in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture. Work must be representational or figurative - abstract or non- representational art is precluded by the terms of the Foundation's Charter. The Foundation will not accept applications from commercial artists, photographers, video artists, filmmakers, craftmakers, or any artist whose work falls primarily into these categories. To be eligible for a grant candidates are required to have already started or completed training in an established school of art and/or to demonstrate, through past work and future plans, a commitment to making art a lifetime career. No geographic requirements. Each grant is $12,500 (Canadian).The Foundation accepts applications throughout the year. P/F Samuel Kress Foundation. Through its Grant Programs, the Kress Foundation supports scholarly projects that promote the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art from antiquity to the early 19th century. These areas are also supported through our Fellowships. The Foundation has grant programs in the following areas: history of art, conservation, digital resources, and projects that advance the 6

7 mission of the Foundation but fall outside our three main programmatic areas. Application deadlines vary. The Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. The Foundation has dual criteria for grants: recognizable artistic merit and demonstrable financial need. The Foundation s mission is to aid those individuals who have worked as professional artists (painters, sculptors, printmakers) over a significant period of time. The Foundation encourages applications from artists who have genuine financial needs that are not necessarily catastrophic. Grants are intended for a one-year period of time. The Foundation will consider need on the part of an applicant for all legitimate expenditures relating to his or her professional work and personal living, including medical expenses. The size of the grant is determined by the individual circumstances of the artist. Applications accepted throughout the year. P/F W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist. The grant program provides photographers with the financial freedom to carry out or complete major photographic essays. Application deadline for next year not yet posted.. P/F 7
